and BENJAMIN FRIEDMAN, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label- Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in label-printing machines, and more particularly to machines for printing labels on tape of woven fabric, which tape is adapted to be out between the labels printed thereon to form separate labels to be attached to articles of clothing and other kinds of goods.
After such labels are printed on a strip of tape, it is necessary to cut them apart and it is customary to fold over the cut edges in order to form an unfrayable er g when the label is sewed or otherwise at tached to its article. For this purpose any well-known or suitable apparatus may be employed, but when it has been attemptec to do this with labels printed on tape, great difficulty has been experienced in properly feeding the tape to be cut to form the individual labels so that it will be cut at the proper point between the labels, and the edges folded over in the desired manner. Also, it is often desired, after a tape has been printed on for the purpose of making labels thereof, to again print on the tape other colors or other matter to complete the label as desired. In such case the label tape must again be fed through a printing apparatus and the feeding thereof, in order to bring the parts already printed in proper register with the printing means, has heretofore been extremely dificult if not impossible.
The main object of our invention is to provide in a label-printing machine of the character described apparatus for disrupt- 'ing the tape at suitable intervals, forming places for engagement with automatic feeding means, so that when the tape is fed through apparatus for cutting it up into labels and folding over the edges the cut ting will be done at the desired places, or when such a tape is fed through further printing apparatus for printing other matthe automatic feeding apparatus will bring the matter already printed thereon into proper register.
I 0 Further ob ects, features and advantages will more clearly appear from the detailed description given below, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which orm a part of this specification. Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a stationary or main frame, 2 a reciprocatory bed which carries the printing plate or type t2, and 3 a pressure -roller mounted to oscillate in standards 1 of the main frame 1, and 5 a handle adapted to simultaneously oscillate said D-roller and reciprocate said bed, the movement of the former being imparted to the latter bV any well-known or suitable means, not shown:
Supported transversely above the rear of the frame'l by means of brackets 6, sec "ed to the standards 4:, is a hopper or treugh 1'. preferably in the form of a V-shanedbox. which is adapted to contain one or more rolls of the continuous tapes or ribbons S to be printed. From said rolls these continuous tapes or ribbons are passed f rwardly around the Q-roller 3, through guides 3 upon said roller, then rearwardlv over the bed 2, and then through the feeding device 9, which comprises stationarv jaw 10, preferably of wood, secured upon a cross-bar 11, having its bent ends secured to brackets 12, which have their lower ends secured, as at 13, to the sides of the rear ends of the main frame 1. Qoacting with said fixed jaw 10, over which the tapes or ribbons 8 pass, is a swinging jaw 14:, comprising in its construction a transverse shaft 15, journaled in the upper end ofthe said brackets 12, a U-shaped frame 16 upon said shaft,aplurality of needles 17 and a clamping plate 18, screwed, bolted, or otherwise secured upon said frame 16 to clamp the needles, as shown. The movable jaw 14 is held normally in its raised or elevated po- I wardly and rearwardly inclinedportion 26 and a horizontal portion 27. g The said horizontal portion 27 is provided with an adjustable extension plate 28, which slides in a groove or slot and is held in an adjusted position by a set screw or other suitable means 29, as shown. By means of this extension plate 28 the length of the horizontal portion 27 of the cam may be varied in order to regulate the operation of the swinging jaw 14, as presently explained.
The operation of the machine so far described is as follows I When the parts of the machine are in their normal positions, as seen in Fig. 1, and the handle 5 is turned in one direction, the pressure D-roller 3 and the bed 2 will be simultaneousl operated, the bed being moved rearwart ly and the curved portion of the D- roller being moved into contact with the bedto press the tapes or ribbons 8 into contact with the printing plate or type and make an impression. The guides 8 on the D-roller hold the tapes 8 with sufficient tension to unwind them from the rolls in the hopper 7 and hence the portions of the tapes upon the rear of the bed will be carried rearwardly between the jaws 10 and 14, the latter jaw, 14, being u'naf fected by the rearward movement of the bed, since the roller 23 on its operating lever 22 passes under the cam 24 and only contacts with its extreme lower end, under which end it springs, owing to the resiliency of the lever 22. After the impression has been made upon the tapes 8 the handle 5 is turned in the reverse direction to restore the parts to their original positions, and in the return or forward movement of the bed the cam 24 will pass under the roller 23, so that the latter will be caused to ride over the portions 26 and 27 of the upper side of said cam. Owing to the engagement of said roller with the cam, the lever 22 will swing the jaw 14 downwardly toward the jaw 10, and the needles of thejaw 14 will press the tapes .8 upon the jaw 10 and hold them against movement while the D-roller'is being returned to its normal position. Since the tapes 8 are thus held stationary, they when the machine is again operated. It will be seen that the length of the horizontal portion 27 of the cam 24 determines the duration of the time during which the tapes are held against movement and the distance the tapes are moved rearwardly at each operation of the machine. Hence by adjusting the plate 28 as previously stated the movement of the tapes may be varied.
In order to disrupt the tapes at suitable points between the labels to form places for engagement with automatic feeding devices when the tape is to be further printed upon or manipulatedby other apparatus, we insert pins 30 in the face or surface of the D-roller 3. For this purpose the D-roller has on its outside a layer of paper or cardboard 31 so that the D-rollerhas a relatively soft surface for pressing the tapes against the printing plate 2 The pins 30 are so embedded and positioned in the surface of the D-roller 3 that as the tapes are fed between the D-roller 3 and the printing plate 2, they serve to cut slits 32 in the tape ex tending transversely of the tape but not to the edges thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, the pins 30 being backed firmly by the solid pressure member 3 and adapted to engage a substantially solid flat face on the printing plate. The pins or cutting members 30 which have a substantially semi-circular cutting edge, lie parallel to the cooperating faces of the printing plate and pressure member and are so positioned that the slits are cut in the tapes midway between the labels simultaneously with the printing thereof. l/Vhile the pins 30 are shown as of circular crosssection, they may be of any equivalent cross-section, and indeed any other equivalent means may be provided for making apertures in the tape, or otherwise disrupting the tape at suitable points to provide the places therein for engagement with the automatic feeding apparatus to which the tape may be later subjected. lVhen the tapes-a portion of one of which is illustrated in Fig. 6 as it comes from the apparatus-are later put through a-printing apparatus for printing further matter or colors thereon, the automatic feeding devices of" engage the slits 32 in order to feed the tapes in proper timed relation so that they will be cut at the proper points midway between the individual labels.
While we have described our improvements in great detail in connection with a preferred embodiment thereof, we do not desire to be limited to such embodiment or details, since many changes and modifications may be made and the invention embodied in widely differing forms of apparatus without departing from the spirit and scope thereof in its broader aspects, especially with reference to the particular means shown and the location of the same for disrupting the tape.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A machine for printing labels on tape of woven fabric having in combination, a solid printing plate for printing labels on tape, a cooperating solid pressure member, a relatively soft covering for said pressure member, means whereby the tape is automatically fed between said plate and pressure member, and means operating in timed relation to said printing means to make transverse slits in the tape to form places therein for the engagement with automatic feeding means, said slit making means comprising rounded disrupting means embedded in said soft covering and backed firmly by said solid pressure member and adapted to engage a substantially solid flat face on said printing plate.
2. A machine for printing labels on tape of woven fabric having in combination, a solid printing plate for printing labels on tape, a cooperating solid pressure member, a relatively soft covering for said pressure member, means whereby the tape is automatically fed between said plate and pressure member, and means operating in timed relation to said printing means to make transverse slits in the tape to form places therein for the engagement with automatic feeding means, said slit making means comprising a pin, having a substantially semicircular cutting edge, the pin lying parallel to the cooperating faces of the printing plate and pressure member and being embedded in said soft covering and backed firmly by said solid pressure member and adapted to engage a substantially solid fiat face on said printing plate.
3. A machine for printing labels on tape of woven fabric having in combination, a reciprocatory bed, a solid printing plate thereon, an oscillating D roller over which the tape is fed and by means of which the tape is pressed on the printing'plate as the bed is reciprocated and the D roller oscillated and means operating in timed relation to said printing means to make transverse slits in the tape to form places therein for the engagement with automatic feeding means, said slit making means comprising a pin, having a substantially semi-circular cutting edge, the pin lying parallel to the cooperating faces of the printing plate and pressure member and being backed firmly by said D roller and adapted to engage a substantially flat solid face on said printing plate.
4:. A machine for printing labels on tape of woven fabric having in combination, a solid printing plate for printing labels on tape, a cooperating solid pressure member, means whereby the tape is automatically fed between said plate and pressure member, and means operating in timed relation to said printing means to make transverse slits in the tape to form places therein for the engagement with automatic feeding means, said slit making means comprising a pin, having a substantially semi-circular cutting edge, the pin lying parallel to the cooperating forces of the printing plate and pressure member and being backed firmly by said solid pressure member and adapted to engage a substantially solid flat face on said printing plate.
