PATENT OFFICE.
JOEN J. PERRY, OF BOBWORTH, MISSOURI.
SAND-EXCLUDED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1921.
Application filed January 11, 1919. Serial No. 270,653.
Toallwhomz'tma concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bosworth, in the county of Carroll and tate of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Excluders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a well tachment having means for effectively preventing the suck of sand by a well pump.
An 1m ortant o ject of this invention is to provi e an attachment for well pumps adapted to exclude all sand and so forth from the pump pipe thereby preventing the same from being pumped up with the water.
A further ob ect of this invention is to provide means of the character described which are eas to attach to a well pump pipe, durable in use, and of highly simplified construction.
Other ob'ects and advantages of the invention will be a parent during the course of the following escription.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specificatlon and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a well pump piple attachment embodied in my invention, an
Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the same.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the referred embodiment of my invention, t e numeral 5 generically desi tes m improved well pump pipe attac ent, w. ich in manufacture may be of an desired material and of any suitable size. he attachment com rises a cylindrical casing 6 having an im eribrate bottom 7. The upper portion of e casing 6 is provided wit external screw threads 8 engagin interiorly disposed screw threads 9 carri by the lower portion of a coupling member 10. The coupling member 10 is adapted for attachment to a well pipe throu h the medium of the interiorl screwthrea ed nut 11 formed integral with the reduced end portion 12 of the same. Circular openings 13 are disposed about the cylinump atdrical casing 6 at a point spaced upwardl from its bottom. A non-rusting wire mes 14 is arranged over the openings 13 and is adapted to exclude particles of sand and the like from the interior of the casing. A pipe 15 is disposed with.-the cylindrical casing 6 and is of a considerabl less diameter than the same. As shown in Fig. 2, the lower end of the pipe 15 is open and is spaced upwardly from the imperforate bottom 7 of the casing 6. The pipe 15 has threaded engagement at its upper end portion thereof with a suitable pipe supporting circular plate 16. The pipe su porting plate 16 is provided with an annu ar flange l7 resting upon the upper end of the casing 6. An interiorly disposed annular shoulder 18 carried by the coupling member 10 is adapted for contact with the annular flange 17 carried by the pipe supporting plate 16. The upper surface of the member 16 is provided with a valve seat 19 receiving a leather valve 20 of the check valve type.
In the use of my improved well pump attachment it will be apparent that the same is attached to the well ipe and arranged in the bottom of the wel. Only that water above level of the openings 13 will be permitted to enter the interior of the cylindrical casing 6.
Upon the creation of a suction, the water passes upwardly through the pipe 15 as inicated b the arrows and subsequently through t e coupling 10 of the well pump.
While I have shown and described the referred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts, as will remain within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:-
A sand excluder comprisin a cylinder having its lower end closed and its upper end open and externally screw threaded, means for admitting fluid to the interior of the cylinder adjacent its upper end, a coupling cap threaded to the u per end of the c linder an internal shoul er formed in sai cap and spaced from the up er end of said cylinder, a valve seat secures between said shoulder and the upper end of the cylinder by the attaching of the cap to the latter,
said seat having a centrall arranged screw In testimony whereof I aflix my signature threaded bore, a gheck Va ve {gr saiddseat, in presence of two Witnesses.
and a, tube threa ed in said re an extending downwardly in the cylinder to a JOHN PERRY 5 point adjacent the closed end thereof and Witnesses:
of a diameter considerably less than the L. L. ODILL,
diameter of the cylinder. F. M. WOODYARD.
