certain.'Improvements in Contact-Shoes, of whichthe followingis a specilication.
This invention is an improved contact shoe designed especially for taking current from a contact rail in the operation ofelectric cars, cranes, conveyers and other electrically operating traveling devices. It comprises means whereby the shoe is adaptedv to be reversed so that yit can be used for making either top or vbottom running Contact, means `whereby the contact member is adapted to be reversed by turning'it in its own` plane or about either Q of transverse axes to effect a desired distribution of wear, means whereby the contact member is permitted a. limited universal play toeiiect a desiredaccommodation to the' 'is to provide a'contact shoe of simple,` sub- 30 stantial and efficientcharacter'adapted for automatic as well as manual adjustment to varying conditionsofv use, whether -inthe operation ofV cars or otherwise.
The characteristic'features andadvantages of our improved shoe will be more fully understood from the following description of typesthereof and the accompanying drawings illustratingsamek e l In .the drawings, F'gure 1is a top plan view ofv a shoe madeinaccordance with, our invention g` F ig'. 2 is a side view of the same applied to a support shown in section; Fig. Sis a front elevation/of said shoe; Fig. 4 is atop plan View of amodied construction;

as a car sill, the bracket beingv adjustable to and held in diierent vertical positions byy means of the slots 3 for passage of .bolts 4 carried by the support and the serrated sections 5 ,for engagement with serrated` blocks 6 clamped thereto lby the nuts 7 on the bolts.
The bracket is provided further with the cylindrical bearings 8 on opposite sides of its lower part, and with the housing 9 prO- viding seats 10 and 11 containing the respectiveV slots 12 and 13, disposed between` the bearings. yA block 14 containing sockets 15 and 16 is clamped by the bolts 17 tothe' bracket above the housing 9.
In the form of the invention illustrated Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive,` a rocker arm 18 is provided with the integrally formed bear,- ings 19 and the detachable bearings 20 clamped together by the bolts 21 around the bearings 8 in rocking relation thereto, the rocker arm being provided with the further bearings 22 having the ins 23thereon.
A contact member 24 is engaged between the bearings 22 by a pin 2 5 passing therethrough, the' pin being of such smaller diameter than the members central bore A26 and larger end bores 27 asto permit such member substantial play universally with relation to such pin. .The contact member 24 is provided with the corner recesses 29 of increasing depth as they approach the respective edges of the member, withrvthe re cesses 30 between` thev respective pairs of recesses 29, Vwith sockets 31 between contiguousrrecesses 29 and 30, and with threaded holes 32 adapted for receiving binding screws 33, providing a comparatively light..
as well as strong structure having convenient means in its several reversed positions fon (when the pin isremoved and the wires de-r tached) by turning suchmember in its* own plane or upside down either around its axis ortransverse thereto.
In the form illustrated in 4 and 5,
yso
the modified rocker arm 18 which is engaged to the bearings 8 as previously described, is provided with a bearing 22 which extends into the recess or through passage 30 of the contact member 24"; this member being provided with the corner recesses 2 9,
the sockets 31 for the wires 34, and the bores27 for the passage of a pin 25 which extends through the larger bore 26 in the bearing 22. rIhe member 24 is `permitted a limited universal oscillation, on its axis -and transversely thereto, by its free connection with the part 18', and can be reversed; the automatic movement to effect accommodation due to irregularities in the rail or the swaying of the car and the reversal to eifect `distribution of wear, as described in connection with the member 24, for which it can be substituted.
The arms 18 and 18 are each provided with a seat or socket 35 for holdinga spring 36, through which and one of the slots 12 or 13 passes a bolt 37, the bolt head engaging a washer or bearing 38 through which tension is applied to the spring and pressure is applied thereby to the seat by screwing up thev bolts nut.
A substantially U-shaped guard 39 is adapted to be sprung over the parts 10 and 11, having ahole 40 in a leg thereof for the passage of the bolt 37 'to hold it in place.
In the application of the spring 36 and its connected parts, as illustrated, the arms 18' and 18 to which they are applied will be pressed upwardly, to press the members 24 and 24 upwardly, as required for underrunning contact. But it will be understood that by disengaging the parts 20, 37 and 39 the corresponding parts 18 and 18 can be reversed in their relation to the part 1 and connected for effecting a top running convtact with the member 24 and 24', the bolt 37 now extending downwardly through the slot 12 and drawing downwardly upon the spring 36 which acts through its-seat 35 to press downwardly the corresponding arms 18 land 18.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the bracket 1 carries an integrally formed arm and contact member 18 connected in reversible relation to the bearings 8 for effecting either top or bottom contact, by the parts 19 and 20 through which pass the bolts 21 and which have ends of the conductors 34 clamped between them to carry current therefrom to the part 14. The part 18, which is shown in top running relation to the rail, is pressed downwardly by the connection of the recessed bolt 37 with the reversed guard 39 and the part 10, the bol-lt acting through the washer 38 on the spring 36 in the socket 38, reversed with relation to the position thereof previously shown.
Having described our invention, we claim: 1. In an electrical contact device, thecombination with a supporting member, of an oscillatory member connected in reversible relation thereto, a contact member carried by said oscillatory member, and mechanism comprising reversible means whereby 'said oscillatory member can be pressed in opposite directions.

3. In an electrical contact device, the combination with a supporting member,of an oscillatory member connected in reversible relation thereto and limited to movement on 1 a horizontal axis, and a contact member connected in 'universally movable relation relative to said oscillatory member.
4. In an electrical contact device, the combination with a supporting member having bearings, of a member connected in oscillatory relation to said supporting member and having a bearing disposed betweensaid beari ings first named, means comprising a spring adapted to be disposed between said bearing second named and either of said bearings first named to press said oscillatory member in either direction, and a contact member connected with said oscillatory member.
5. In an electrical contact device, the combination with a supporting member having oppositely disposed bearings and oppositely disposed slotted seats, of an oscillatory member mounted on said bearings, said oscillatory member havinga seat connected there-- with, a bolt adapted to be passed through said seat and either of said seats, a spring adapted to be placed on said bolt between said seat and either of said seats, and a contact member vconnected to said oscillatory member. 6. In an electrical contact device, the combination witha supporting member having seats, of an oscillatory member connected in reversible relationto said supporting member and havingla seat, a bolt extendingr opposite directions, and a Contact member pivotally connected in reversible relation to said oscillatory member, said oscillatory and contact members having engaging means `for limiting the movement of said contact member.
