Vvisn Woon and Connie) Nonnrons, citizens of the United States said /Voon residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York said Nonnrons residing at Jersey City Heights, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey have invented a new and useful Web-Roll Tension and Supporting Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the control of the web roll for a web printing press. The principal objects of the invention are to provide a web printing press with a new and improved tension controlling apparatus permanently mounted on the frame of the press but arranged so as to be readily connected with and disconnected from the paper roll spindle while the latter is in position in the press; to provide means whereby it is possible to use a shorter paper roll spindle than usual thus reducing the weight considerablyand making it easier to handle; to provide a practicable means whereby, the brake and pulley being mounted separately from the spindle. the breakage of the brake pulleys which frequently occurs in press rooms will be practically eliminated; to provide an arrangement by which breaks in the paper are reduced to a minimum; to provide a practicable and eflicient means for connecting the brake pulley with the paper roll spindle to transmit the rotation of the spindle to the pulley; to provide an improved braking mechanism by which the operator can impose a very gradual pressure on the brake pulley for a slight increase in tension or a yielding grip for an emergency stop and by which. on an emergency stop, the brake shoes will be allowed to turn slightly with the brake pulley to prevent the bringing of the roll to an abrupt stop and the breakage of the web, and to so arrange the regulating valve, which controls the emergency portion of the brake. in connection with the lever by which the brake is operated manually, that when the lever is in a position to allow a nearly exhausted roll to run freely without tension the emergency brake mechanism will be slow acting and when the full roll is run at a maximum tension it will be quick acting.

The invention is shown as applied to the frame 9 of a web printing press. This frame is provided as usual with a runway consisting of two rails 8 for supporting the ends of a spindle 11 of the paper roll 10. The roll is mounted on the spindle by means of the usual cones 12. The spindle is provided with the usual grooved collar, 14 by which the paper roll can be adjusted longitudinally, that is laterally with respect to the press. A spring-seated pin 15 on a lever 16 engages in the groove 17 of this collar 14. The lever 16 is pivoted on a stud 18 fastened to the side frame 9. Pins 19 in the forward 0pposite end 20 of the lever engage a nut 21 through which passes an operating screw 22. This screw also passes through the side frame 9 and is operated by means of a hand wheel 23 and collar 24. as usual.
. The runways 8 are provided with guard rails 25 on the outer sides thereof to guide the ends of the spindle 11 while the paper roll is rolled along the runway into position. It will be noted that this spindle 11 is shorter than usual and is not provided with any brake pulley but near each end is provided with a slightly reduced neck 26. It is the end of the spindle beyond this neck that is carried by the runway.
The frame of the press at the end of the runway is provided with a hollow cylindrical projection 28 on each side in which slides a cylindrical housing 27 provided with a depressed surface 29 normally registering with the runway 8 and virtually constituting a continuation thereof. The spindle is rolled in and passes from the runway on this surface and brings up against the end of it. This centers it at the exact center of the cylindrical projection 28.
The housing 27 carries at its rear end a ball bearing ring 31 held in place by a nut 30. The usual balls are provided and the ball bearing supports the end of a sleeve coupling 32. The inner race of the ball bearing is clamped to the sleeve coupling 32 by a nut 33. The front end of the sleeve coupling is provided with a recess for receiving the end of the spindle as will appear, and is provided with spring-seated pins 34 for engaging in a keyway 35 in the spindle 11.- The housing 27 is provided with a key 36 operating in a groove 37 at the bottom of the inside ofthe cylinder 28 to serve to keep the housing from turning.
Axially in alinement with the cylindrical projection 28 is a fluid cylinder 39 supported by a bracket on the frame. In this cylinder is a piston 38 provided with a ball bearing similar to the one above described. It is clamped to the outer end of the sleeve coupling by means of a nut 40. Suitable packing rings 41 are shown.
, A brake pulley 42 is slidably mounted on the coupling 32 by means of a key 43 fixed to the pulley and having sliding engagement in a groove 44 on the coupling 32. The two cylinders 39 on opposite sides of the frame are connected by air pipes 45 and 46. These pipes are connected with each other at any convenient point by a transverse pipe in which is an operating valve 47 connected with the inlet and exhaust. It will be seen therefore that when air is admitted behind one of the pistons 38, it being assumed that the spindle is centered as has been mentioned, the pistons together with the couplings 32 and the bearings, as well as the housings 27, will be forced toward the center of the machine. The recesses in the ends of the cou plings 32 thus receive the ends of the web roll spindle.
At first the pins 34 yield and allow the parts to come into proper relation with each other but as soon as the web roll has turned a small part of a revolution one of the pins 34 will spring into the keyway Thereafter the rotation of the web roll will be transmitted positively to the coupling :52. By comparison of Figs. 4 and 5 it will be seen that, although the web roll spindle rested on the surface 29 when first brought into position, it is supported by the coupling and the cylindrical projection 28 when the parts are moved over as Shown in Pig. 5. The reduced portion 26 of the web roll spindle then comes over the surface 29 and the spindle is entirely supported by the anti-friction ball bearings. Thus no friction takes place between tho spindl and the supporting surfaces 29. l in'thermmrc. it will be seen that the coupling 32 can be moved in this way without disturbing the brake pulley 42 and without preventing the positive rotation thereof with the coupling and web roll spindle. The pulley is kept in proper position, while the coupling moves, by its brake shoes 50 engaging the flanges on the pulley. It will be understood that although there is a coiuil-ing on each side of the press, only one of them, preferably, has a brake pulley.
The brake shoes 50 are mounted on two brake beams 48 and 49 by means of pins 51. These pins extend into elongated slots in the brake shoes for a purpose that will appear. The lower brake shoc is shown as provided with a fiat spring 52 hearing on its outer surface and also bearing on the brake beam 49. The two brake beams are connected by an adjustable link 57.
The lower brake beam 45) is supported in its lowest position by a set screw 54 and is held from transverse motion by a fork piece both mounted in a brackct 56 on the frame 9. The extreme frce cud ol the longer brake beam 49 carrics a rollcr 58 which engages an eccentric 59 c mslitutin a part of an operating lever 0 which is pivoted on a stud 61. This lcvcr is pr: vided with a pivoted pawl lever 2 engaging a ratchet segment ()3 fastcucd to the frame of the machine. Thc lever is also provided with a gear segment (34 moshing with a second gear segment (57 which is pivoted on the axis of the stem 65 of an inlet valve 66.
This valve stem (35 is provided with a slotted lever 68 fixed thereto and adapted to be adjustably connected through the slot with the segment 67 so that the valve will turn with this segment. This valve (in controls the passage of compressed air or other fluid to an emergency brake cylinder 70, the piston 69 of which straddles the lower brake beam 49 and is controlled by this valve. It is operated through the usual push button system in conncctibn with tho braking arrangement of the cntirc press (not shown).
The action of the braking mechanism will be understood readily. The regulating valve 66 and connected parts are so set that when the operating lever 60 is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6 the valve opening is reduced to a minimum. The parts are in this condition when a paper roll is nearly exhausted and the brake pulley runs freely. In this condition of low tension it will be seen that the emergency brake cylinder will act slowly when the push button is operated. This is for the purpose of preventing too rapid an action at this time and causing the web to break. When the lever is in the dotted line position in Fig. 6, which is the position it occupies when the full roll is operating under maximum running tension, the valve is fully open and the emergency brake cylinder is able to act with extreme rapidity upon the operation of the push button.
The spring 52 arranged as described enables the operator to impose a very gradual pressure on the brake pulley for a slight increase of tension and a yielding grip for an emergency stop. On account of this the preliminary pressure on the pulley surface is equal only to the tension of the spring.
The object of having the pins 51 pass through elongated slots 58 is to permit the brake shoes to turn slightly with the pulley when the emergency air cylinder is operated to bring the roll to an abrupt stop. Under these conditions the tendency of the web to break is largely overcome. This is particularly important when the web roll is stopped when nearly exhausted. This of course c0- operateswith the regulating valve and its connections as described.
It will be seen therefore that the tension controlling apparatus is mounted on the frame of the press itself so that the web roll does not have to be provided with the usual brake pulley and the considerable percentage of breakage thereof due to rough handling about the plant is eliminated. Furthermore, the weight of this brake pulley on the spindle, as well as a considerable proportion of the ends of the spindle, are excluded and consequently the web roll and its spindle are lightened and made easier to transport about the plant. It will be seen that the web roll is readily connected with and disconnected from the brake pulley and that in this way it is an easy and simple matter to run the spindle on ball bearings thus reducing friction as well as breaks in the paper. In connection with these features the improvements in the braking mechanism just described also constitute a part of the invention, but are claimed separately 'in my divisional application.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 and 8 substantially the same conch time exist except th t the ball hearing at the outer end of the coupling 82 is supported by a slide 7 8 in a cylinder 79 and in this case the slide is provided with a rack 80. A controlling handle 81 is provided having a gear segment 82 meshing with the rack and operating it for the same purpose as the compressed air operates the piston in the other form. A pin 83 is shown for holding the parts in their two extreme posi time Although we have illustrated and described only two forms of the invention, we are aware of the fact that it is capable of being carried out in many other ways without departing from the scope thereof as expressed in the claims.
Therefore we do not wish to be limited to the details of construction described herein. but what we do claim is:
1. The combination with a printing press frame having a runway for a web roll spindle and having bearings adjacent thereto, of a member rotatably mounted in said bearings and detachably connected with the spindle for supporting the end thereof, a tension controlling device for said spindle and member mounted on the frame, and means for moving said member axially, said member being adapted to be connected with the spindle for rotating it.
2. The combination with a printing press frame having a runway for supporting the two ends of a web roll spindle and having bearings opposite each other on the two sides of the frame, of a pair of members rotatably mounted in said bearings, and means for inter-engaging the ends of the spindle with said members and holding the spindle up off the runway. whereby the spindle will be carried by said bearings.
3. In a printing press, the combination with a runway for a web roll spindle, and movable housings each having a surface registering with the runway and adapted to receive one end of the spindle therefrom. of rotatable members for supporting the ends of the web roll. spindle, said members being movable longitudinally to engage said spindle, take its weight from the housings, and rotate therewith.
4. The combination with a printing press frame having a runway along which a web roll spindle can roll and having bearings adjacent thereto, of a sleeve coupling rotatably mounted in said bearings, means for arresting the web roll spindle in a position in which it is in alinement with the coupling, and means for interrngaging the spindle and coupling to cause the spindle to drive the coupling.
5. In a printing press. the combination of a runway for the ends of a web roll spindle, a member for supporting the end of the spindle, means for moving said member longitudinally to engage the spindle, and means for holding the spindle in a position in which it registers with said member.
6. In a printing press, the combination with stationary means for supportin a web roll spindle near both ends thereor, of a member independent of said means movable longitudinally and having a recess for re ceiving the end of the spindle while supported on said stationary means, and means for positively connecting the end of the spindle with said member to rotate it therewith.
7. In a printing press, the combination of a member for supporting the end of a web roll spindle, movable longitudinally and having a recess for receiving the end of the spindle, means for positively connecting the end of the spindle with said member to rotate it therewith, separate means for supporting the spindle in position to be engaged by said member, and means for shifting the spindle longitudinally while held by and rotating with said member.
8. The combination with a web printing press frame, of a tension controlling device for the web roll permanently mounted on the frame, said frame having means thereon for supporting the web roll spindle, and means carried by said frame for connecting the spindle with the tension controlling device and disconnecting it therefrom while the spindle is resting in stationary condition on said supporting means.
9. The combination with a web printing press frame having a longitudinal runway for supporting a web roll spindle and guiding it along the frame, of a brake pulley for the web roll permanently mounted on the frame, and. means independent of said brake pulley and mounted on the frame for positively connecting the web roll spindle with said brake pulley while the spindle is resting on the runway and for disconnecting it therefrom, whereby the rotation of the web roll spindle will be transmitted to the brake pulley.
10. The combination with a printing press frame having a longitudinal runway for supporting the two ends of a web roll spindle and having bearings opposite each other on the two sides of the frame, of a pair of'sleeve couplings rotatably ineunt ed in said bearings, a brake pulley rotatable positively with one of said couplings, and means for interengaging the ends of the spindle with the couplings and holding the spindle up off the runway, whereby the spindle will be carried by said bearings.
11. In a, printing press, the combination with aframe having a runway for supporting a web roll spindle, of a tension controlling device for said spindle mounted on the frame and comprising a sleeve coupling mounted to rotate and capable of longitudinal motion, means for moving said coupling axially, said coupling being provided with means at its end for engaging the end of a web roll spindle while on the runway and for positively connecting it with itself so as to transmit a motion of rotation from the spindle to the coupling, and a brake pulley mounted on said coupling and positively connected to rotate therewith.
12. In a printing press, the combination with a runway for one end of a web roll spindle, of a transversely rcciprocable member registering with said runway for receiving, centering, and supporting the end of the web roll spindle, a bearing on said member, and a coupling having one end supported by said bearing for receiving the extreme end of thespindle while the spindle is supported and centered by said member.
In a printing press, the combination of a support for a web roll spindle, of a cylinder arranged transversely thereto, a piston in said cylinder, and means supported at the end by, and movable with, the piston for positively engaging with the end of the web roll spindle while it is located on said support to rotate with it.
14. In a printing press. the cmnbimition of a support for a web roll spindle, with a cylinder arranged transversely thereto, :1, piston in said cylinder, a bearing on the piston, and a sleeve coupling having one end supported by said bearing and movable with the piston, the other end of said coupling having means for positively engaging it with the end of the web roll spindle.
15. In a printing press. the combination of a support for a web roll spindle, with a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a bearing on the piston, a sleeve coupling having one end carried by said bearing and movable with the piston, the other end of said cou-- pling having means for engaging it with the end of the web roll spindle, a support concentric with said cylinder having a hearing therein for the other end of said coupling and movable therewith and having means for supporting the end of the web roll spindle independently of the coupling.
16. In a printing press, the combination with a runway for one end of a web roll spindle, of a transversely reciprocable housing registering with said runway and ha ving a surface thereon for receiving and supporting the end of the web roll spindle, said housing having a bearing and a sleeve coupling having one end supported by said bearing.
17. In a printing press. the cmnbination with a runway for one end of a web roll spindle, of a housing registering with said runway and having a surface thereon for receiving and supporting the end of the web roll spindle, said housing-having a bearing,

a sleeve coupling having one end supported by said bearing, and means at the other end of said sleeve coupling for supporting it and for moving it longitudinally into a position to engage the end of a web roll spindle.
18. In a printing press, the combination with a runway for one end of a web roll spindle, of a housing registering with said runway and having a surface thereon for receiving therefrom the end of the web roll spindle, a sleeve coupling having one end supported by said housing, means at the other end of said sleevecoupling for supporting it and for moving it longitudinally into a position to engage the end of a web roll spindle, and a brake pulley mounted on and slidingly keyed to the coupling, whereby said pulley will rotate with the coupling in all positions thereof.
19. In a printing press, the combination with a runway for a web roll spindle, or means for arresting the spindle in a definite position at the end of said runway, an axially slidable sleeve coupling in registration with the position or the spindle when held by said arresting means, said coupling having means for engaging the end 01 the spindle and transmitting the rotation thereof to the coupling, movable antidiriction bearings for supporting the coupling, means for moving the spindle longitudinally with its bearings, and a brake pulley slidably keyed to the spindle and rotatable thereby.
20. In a printing press, the combination of a web roll spindle, a brake pulley connected therewith, a brake shoe for the pulley, means for operating the brake shoe, and means whereby when the tension is removed from the brake shoe for allowing a nearly exhausted roll to feed the brake shoe will have a relatively slow action.
21. In a printing press, the combination of a web roll spindle, a brake pulley connected therewith, a brake shoe for the pulley, means for operating the brake shoe, and means whereby when the tension is removed from the brake shoe for allowing a nearly exhausted roll to feed the brake shoe will have a relatively slow action, the last named means also being arranged to be ready for quick action when a full roll is operating normally under tension.
22. In a printing press, the combination 01 a web roll spindle, a brake pulley connected therewith, a brake shoe for the pulley, means for operating the brake shoe, and means whereby when a full roll is operating normally under tension the brake shoe will be in condition for quick action.
23. In a printing press, the combination of a web roll brake pulley, brake shoes, of means for operating the brake shoes, an emergency brake applying device, and means for allowing said emergency device to 0p crate rapidly when a full roll is operating normally under tension, and for preventing the rapid operation of the emergency device when a roll is operating under low tension.
