Specification of Letters Patent.

- CAULEY, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Algood, in the county of Putnam and the State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved .Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in gates and more particularly to' operating mechanism therefor, an object of the invention being to provide a gate or gates normally positioned across a roadway or entrance which automatically open to allow an automobile or other vehicle to pass through and automatically close after the vehicle has passed through.
A further object is to provide a gate which will resist manual operation because of the fact that the gate is held by an improved locking means, which means must be re leased by" the weight of a vehicle preliminary to the actual movement of the gate thereby.
A further object is to provide an automatic gate with operating means dependent upon the weight of a vehicle approaching the gate to operate the same and a gate which dispenses with the necessity of the driver of the vehicle alighting to open the same or to close it after the vehicle has passed through.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features in construction which will appear as the specification progresses and which will be pointed out in the claims.

1 represents a rectangular base frame composed of square timbers or other suitable materials. Uprights 2 are secured to the frame at the center of its side members. These uprights may if preferred extend below the frame and project into the ground as illustrated. A cross bar 3 is secured to the uprights 2 in any desired manner and projects beyond the sides of the frame, the
cross bar being necessarily located high enough to allow the passage of a vehicle thereunder. A rail 5 is spaced from the cross bar and secured to the bar 3 at its ends. are suspended from the rail 5 by means of hangers 7, and grooved pulleys 8 are car-- ried by the hangers, engaging the rail 5 and faiclilitating the sliding of the gates on the ra The base frame 1 supports a pair of inclined platforms pivotally supported at their lower ends adjacent the ends of the frame 1 and said platforms normally incline upwardly from their point of pivotal attachment to a point in proximity to the lower edges of the gate 6. l have shown transverse rods 9 in the frame pivotally supporting the platforms.
The platforms 9 comprise parallel side Gates 6 of any desired construction membersll. connected by floor boards 12 secured on the side parallel members. One pair of side members 11 is provided at one end with projecting lugs 13 and the other pair of side members 11 is provided at one end with recesses 10 adapted to receive the lugs 13 and form the connection clearly illustrated in Fig. 8.
Laterally projecting levers 16 are fulcrumed near their inner ends on the upper ends of uprights 2 and the inner shorter ends 15 of said levers are connected by rods 14 with one of the platforms 9. The outerlonger ends 17 of the levers 16 are connected by links 18 with the outer ends of the gate 6, and said levers 16 are preferably curved downwardly at their outer ends and made with a plurality of openings 17 for the attaohment of the links 18 to permit of a certain amount of adjustment to give the desired operation.
Wedge shaped blocks 19 or other suitable means may be provided on the frame 1 and spaced apart to aid in guiding the lower ends of the gates in their movement.
The platforms 9 are normally held and the gate 6 secured in closed position by means of a crank shaft 20, the latter extending transversely under one of the platforms and having rotary or partial rotary mounting in suitable bearings 21 on frame 1.
This shaft 20 constitutes a relatively long crank shaft so positioned normally under one of the platforms 9 as to support the latter against downward movement, thus constituting a lock for the platforms, as they must move downwardly together due to their connection at their ends. Crank arms 22 are provided on the ends of shaft 20 and one of these crank arms is connected by a spring 23 with the frame 1, holding the shaft in normal position and operating to return it to such position when permitted.
Crank shafts 24: are supported in suitable bearings'25 on frame 1 and project under the platforms 9 adjacent their pivoted ends. These shafts 2 1 have upwardly projecting relatively Wide crank arms 26, projecting through slots 27 in the platforms 9 and constitute triggers to be engaged by the wheels of the vehicle and tripped or depressed thereby.
Crank arms 28 on the ends of the shafts 24 are connected by rods or links 29 with crank arms 22 of shaft 20 so that when the triggers 26 are depressed by the contact of the wheel therewith, they will operate to turn shaft 20 to unlocking or releasing position. The operation is as follows:
When a vehicle enters upon either one of the platforms, a wheel of the machine passing over the trigger 26 will partially rotate the crank shaft 24 which by means of a link 29 operates to move the shaft 20 out of locked or holding engagement with the platform 9. With this support removed from under the platforms, the weight of the vehicle depresses the platform upon which .it enters. The rods 14, being secured in the platform, exert a downward pull on the short ends 15 of the levers 16. The long ends 17 of the levers 16 are forced upwardly, operating through the links 18 to pull'the gates open.
It will be readily understood that the gates will remain open as long as the weight of the vehicle remains on the platform. As soon as'the vehicle has passed through the gate and off the other platform, the spring 23 operates to return the shaft 20 to its normal looking or holding position, thus raising the platform and, by means of the rods 14, the 'levers16 and thelinks 18,-operating at garage entrances, since it opens automatically for cars moving in either direction and at the same time forms an effective barrier to keep animals as well as humans from entering the'garage.
Numerous slight changes in construction might be made without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall. within the scope and spirit of the appended'claims.
What I claim is:
1. A gate of the character described, com prising a frame, a pair of platforms mounted in said frame, a pair of gates supported above said platforms, a crank shaft normally held for retaining and locking the platforms in elevated position, wheel operated triggers for operating the said crank shaft to release the platforms, and means whereby a depression of the platforms opens said gates.

A gate of the character described, com prising a frame, a pair of platforms mounted in said frame, a pair of gates supported above said platforms, a crank shaft normally supporting the platforms in elevated position, a'spring holding said crank j to support the platforms, wheel operated triggers for operating the crank shaft against the tension of the spring to release the platforms, and means whereby a depression of the platform opens said gates.
