Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May it i921,
Application filed January 2, 1918. Serial No. 209,984.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH M. SUTHER- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Hairpins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles and it is the principal object-of the invention to provide an improved form of hair pin formed in a manner such as will prevent accidental disengagement and the resultant displacement of the same from the hair of a user, thus, insuring the holding of the hair in dressed form.
The improvementsin the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawing I have shown a side elevation of the improved hair, pin.
Having more particular reference to the drawing, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts, 1 represents the hair pin in its entirety, the same, of course, being formed of a length of wire or other similar pliable material bent intermediate its ends to provide oppositely disposed leg portions 2. Portions of the legs are bent inwardly and arranged in opposite relation as indicated by the numerals 3 and 4:, it being noted that the inwardly bent portions 3 are crimped as at 5 so that the concaved portions of the intermediate crimps or kinks are adjacent each other, while the inwardly bent portions 4 are crimped as at 6 so that the intermediate crimps or kinks have the convex portions thereof arranged adjacent each other, thus providing a pair of longitudinally disposed hair receiving pockets whereby positive engagement of the hair pin with the hair of a user will be insured. i It will be also noted, that by arranging the convex portions of the intermediate kinks of the portions 4: adjacent each other that the way between the leg portions 2 of the pin will be constricted to a greater extent than that portion of the same betweenthe crimped sides 5; thus, affording an effectual locking means which when engaged with the hair of a user will positively prevent accidental disarrangement or displacement of the pin with relation thereto. However, due to the curving of the crimps in the portions 3 and 4, it will be readily understood that the pin may be easily disengaged from the hair of a user by pulling the same outwardly; the hair moving easily between the several constricted portions of the way betweenthe legs 2. The pin of course, may be equally as easily engaged with the hair due to this arrangement.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim A hair pin comprising a wire bent at its mid length to form two equal and parallel legs, each of said legs being bent inwardly at spaced apart points to form two minor sections and three parallel major sections, the minor sections lying in a plane Within that of the major sections, said major sections being of substantiallythe same length, the inner minor sections being centrally crimped to form outer laterally spaced corrugations, and the outer minorsections centrally crimped inwardly to form contacting bearings, and crimped outwardly on opposite sides of said bearingsto form outer corrugations.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
ELIZABETH M. SUTlE-IERLAND.
