Be it known that I, THoMAs C. SrnLLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city in the county of New York and StateofNJew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combinations of Closures and Pullers for Bottles and other Containers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to closures for bottles and combinations thereof with pullers,
and. has for a purpose the provision of a lock connected with a binder for the stopper adjustable by a simple act of revolving a cap, or plate, and of a puller insertible in the j stopper which also serves to bind the cap,
or plate, thereon, the mechanism being such that the stopper, puller and binder are cornbined and Iremovable without disengagement, dismemberment or separation, the one from vthe other.
Perhaps it is not least important that pro-` vision fis here made, by constructing an underlying segment and a cam face shoulder on,v the rim, for the use of machinery for emplacement. The ordinary bottle rim cannot withstand the force that must be exerted by` a "machine in motion for bending the parts and forcing other parts into locked relation. And I provide a locking plate and arms specially adaptedfor use with that construction.
Figure 1 is a top view of a bottle having its stopper secured by my improved device. Fig. 2 is a section on the line`2-2 of Fig. 1, with the plate (11) intact. Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow A ini-Fig. 1.` Fig. 4 is a diametrical section of the bottle neck and cork, with the puller intact.. f

Y Upon the stopper 10 is placed a plate 11, having two do-wnwardly bent arms 12 formed with projections 13, each of which is provided with a tooth 14 and an aperture 15,the useof which will presently be described.

f COMBINATION OF CLOSURES AND PULLERS FOR BOTTLES AND OTHER CONTAINERS.

Application filed August 10, 1918. Serial No. 249,312.
The plate 11 is provided with a central aperture 16 and slots, 17; and beyond-the ends of the slots are acute downward bends, 18, the .purpose being to utilize resiliency and facilitate the act of locking. The stopper extracting device consists of the prong 19 having a bar 20 and ring 21. Said ex-y tracting device being fully described in my U. S. application above referred to, 1 need not here describe it but `will only describe its use in combination with the plate 11, which use is -as follows:
YThe plate 11 is placed centrally upon the stopper, and so positioned that the slots, 17, are in alinement with the notches, 9, in the shoulders, 7, and the extractor is then forced down through the slots 17 and into .the
stopper until the bar 2O reaches the upper surface of the stopper, 10, or if necessary, l
in order to obtain perfect adjustment, the
lower edge of the bar may be pressed down into the top of the stopper and into the cut made by the descending extractor. This ,is
done while the arms 12 are in the position o shown in dotted line in Fig. 1. The ring 21 is then given a preliminary pull so as to able tool inserted in the aperture, 15,.` The plate'is then rotated sufficiently tocause the projections, 13, to fully clear the shoulders An upward pull at the ring 21 will then extract the stopper.
The puller described in said application M has smooth and practicable coaction `with this locking device. Alone it is effective to extract the stopper without external muti. lation. In this combination, it is inserted through the slots, 17, `adjacent to the central aperture, 16, whilethe plate and. arms thereof are alined at right .ngles to their final positions. InFig. 4 is shown how the preliminary pull-raises thepuller from the ,dot-
ted position, 24, to the full line position 26,
and thereby causes the inclined points, 23,'
of the wings, 19X, to spread said wings from the dotted position, 22, to the full line position, 26, by which they are firmly engaged in the stopper to pull it. Obviously, an incidental result of the pull is to move the point, 25, upward, corresponding with the upward movement of bar 2O and ring 2l.
In order to set the wings, 19X, as shown in F ig. 3, a preliminary pull at the ring, 2l,
A, and a slight movement upward of the prong, 19, is required. That raises the bar, 20,
above the plate, 11, which is now turned half/around into locked relation. The ring,
21, being now released, resilient reaction occurs and bar, 20, comes to rest with resilientV pressure onthe plate, across aperture, 16, `asseen in Figf2.
It is obvious that variations in the forms of construction would `be feasible .without departing from the principle.k or general plan of the invention; and, therefore, I do not, by the foregoing specification, or the illustrations-or by these claims, intend placv ing a limitation upon the adoption of new A forms of construction in keeping' with said thereto, a Cam face, the latter notched for engagement'with artooth on a projection of an arm of a locking device.
` 2. The combination of a bottle with' a locking closure,the vlocking closure comprising a stopper equipped with a puller anchored therein and a-locking plate attached to thestopper, `the locking plate formed with an aperture and slots at the center for engagement `of thev plate with and under the horizontally positioned bar of the puller in place, having also beyond and alined with the slots downward bent arms, and on the arms lateral projections on which are formed teeth for engagement, in locked relation, with notches formed in cam faces of shoulders of outer segments of' the rim around the mouth of the bottle. 8. In a combination, as described, the subcombination of a puller for a stopper with a revoluble locking plate, 'the puller formed of resilient material and consisting of a prong sharply pointed at one end, having also lsharpened exterior edges adjacent to the point,rwings on laterally extended portions of the prong, each wing bluntly shouldered on each side of a sharp point formed centrally thereon and slanted at an angle from `the plane of the wing, `each -wing slantcombination of a puller for a stopper'with' a revoluble locking plate, the puller formed of resilient materialV and consisting of a prong sharply pointed at one end, having also sharpened exterior edges adjacent to the point, wings'on laterally extended portions of the prong, each wing bluntly shouldered on each side ofv a sharp point formed centrally Athereon and slanted at an-angle'Y from lthe plane ofthe wing, each wing 'slanted at an angle from the planefof the prong, and a centrally apertured v"bar v at the end opposite the pointed'en'd, the plate formed with downwardly bent arms and rectangu-l larly disposed projections thereon, the plate also centrally apertured and slotted oneach side ofthe aperture, Itheslots Iin right angled relation tofthe greater width of 'the apertured bar of the puller, in place, the projections on the arms formed with" teeth for engagement in notches in the rim of a bottle, the tooth on each 'projection' posi-4 tloned on the interior edge lof the proje'c-v` tion and at the junction of a horizontal and a slanted section 'of' the edge.A Y l5.
