manner, pencils, pens and other similar small articles, in position for readily inserting the pencils or pen holders so they will be held self-locked and in such manner that they will not accidentally drop out and be lost and are so positioned that they may be readily reached when desired.
Primarily, my invention has for its purpose to provide an improved container of the general type stated, of ak relatively few parts, so arranged that a number of pencils and like articles can be carried and each individually held, separate from the others, to facilitate the withdrawal and insertion of.
any desired one of such articles and whose body is shaped for being carried in the'outer or top pocket of a coat or vest that is comparatively light in weight, and in which the several parts are so formed that the complete container can be easily and economically manufactured and which, whenl applied for use, vpresents a neat appearance and will not unduly weareor injure the garment on which it may be carried.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a device of the character stated in -which is included an outer thin metal casing which constitutes a closurefor all parts of the container excepting the top portion having the entrance openings, into which the pencils are received, and which includes a peculiarly shaped and integral clip portion forl gripping the outer top edge of the garment pocket to thereby hold the container body securely within the pocket. .v
With other minor objects in view, that y, will hereinafter appear, my` invention consists of a deviceof the kind stated, that embodies the peculiar features of construction and novel combination of parts, fully brought out in the -following detailed description, specifically mentioned in the apy pended'claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawingfin Which:
PENCIL-CONTAINER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
3 and 4.
Patented May s, 192i.
Application led March 3, 1921. Serialv No. 449.278.
Figure l is a perspective viewof my invention, the container being. shown as carried in the upper pocket of a coat.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the container, an inserted pencil and the self-locking spring member being indicated in locked engagement in dotted lines, the spring-member being also shown at its natural or eX- panded position across the pencil receiving bore or pocket, in full lines. Y
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the container, the single `fastening screw, hereinafter referred to, being indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view, partly in.
horizontal section, several pencils, of different external contour, being shown as secured in their respective pockets of the container.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the upper end of the body portion of the'container, the exterior casing being omitted.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking device with its multiple individual resi-lient clamping members.
Fig..V 7 isa detail perspective view of the v wedge slide for securing the-locking device in its operative position, shown in Figs. 2,
In the practical development of my container the same is composed of substantially four parts adapted for being secured in the assembled or operative-condition by a single screw, and the said parts include a body portion l preferably cast, or otherwise formed, of aluminum to give the desired lightness ofweight, an outer cup shaped casing that incloses all of the body 1and its .attached members presently mentioned, Yexcepting' the top or-,entrance end for the pencil, a single locky device, stamped or otherwise shaped .from thin resilient steel, .and a keeper or slide that secures the lock device in its operative position upon and within the container body, as will be pres-V ently fully explained. v
In practice, the container 1 is in the 1nature of an elongated fiat portion, with its corners rounded, as at 10, whereby to snugly engage the opposite ends ofthe pockets in a way that it will not readily tear or wear out the said pocket, a smooth engagement of the container being further 'provided for by the thin metal casing 2 that closes over the body 1, as' best shown in drawings.
Figs. Zand 4 of the 1 The body 1 has a plurality of vertical bores lio or passages 11, four being shown, that eX- tend through the full length of the said body, and the said bores 11,7eXcepting along one edge (the front) which is flattened, as shown at v12, and for reasons best explained, are round and of suiiicient diameter that (when the containerv is arranged -for holding lead pencils) the pencils can be easily inserted, point end down and without danger of breaking the points, the mouth of the several passages 11 being dared as at 13 Vto permit the easy and safe insertion of the pencil.
0n the front side, near the top, the body 1 is formed with a series of downwardly and inwardly inclined, square shaped openings 14, there being shown one for each bore or passage 11 and these openings are disposed transversely of the body portion and in horizontal alinement with a transverse dove-tailed groove 15 which merges with the several openings 14, as is clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 5, the groove 15 being provided for the reception of a dove tailed keeper 3 that is endwise slidable into and forms a closure for the groove 15 and the openings 14, it being also provided with a transverse seat or recess 30 for snugly Vfitting over the upper slot end or linger grip of Ithe lockingY device fi, the function of whichis clearly a; parent by referring to F ig. 2 and whose structure is illustrated in detail in Fig. 6.
Theilocking device lis composed of a single body platevof resilient metal that is stamped or otherwise shaped to present a solid top end 40 which constitutes a convenient finger grip for holding the said device e, when inserting it to its operative position within the container body 1, it having a series of inwardly bowed spring iingers 11 of such length and so separated that the individual lingers can be readily slipped through the several openings 14E when the slide@ is removed, as sh wnin Fig. 5, it being understood that when the device 4l is inserted into the body 1 the fingers are bowed across the passages 11 in the body 1 in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 2, it being apparent by referring to the said Fig. 2 that byextending the spring member l1 across the passages 11, as shown, a perfect clearance for the insertion of the pencils is at all-times provided andin such manner that the point ends of the pencils will eigage vthe spring lingers 4l. in a manner that Vwill cause the said fingers to flatten out to the position'shown in dotted lines on Fig'. 2 and without danger of the pencil point getting clogged'or broken. The shape of the dove-tailed slide or keeper 3 with its seat 30 serves to holding the head or top end 40 of the spring lock 4 seated solid be-` tween the slide 3 and the adjacent bearingl face 16 of the body 1.-
Vat 71 to facilitate slipping said clip over the pocket edge, the clip, inl practice, being sufiiciently resilient to secure the device in the pocket against dropping out.
To provide against thekcontainer being easily pulled out of the pocket, however, a button 8 may be sewn along the upper front edge of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 1, and under which the curved clip may be hooked or as shown, and to provide for extending the clip members above the upper end of the body the iiange 17 thereof is cut out as lat 17--17 a for such purpose.
It will be observed that when the parts are assembled as in Fig. 2, the casing holds the keeper or slide member 3 in'place and for holding the several parts that constitute the complete container, together, a single screw 9, best showny yin dotted lines Fig. 3, passes through vthe casing and screwsjnto the body 1.V
The easing 2 has an aperture 72 in the bottom wnich is provided for the insertion of a head pin, or other like-instrument, to
remove by pushing up'short pencil stumps that might drop to the bottom of the passage 11 in the bodyl.v y
From the foregoing taken iny connection with the accompanying drawing, the complete structure, the manner ofits use and its advantages will be readily apparent to those familiar with the practical applicationr of devices of this kind. 1 f
