Description
J. H. KRESS.
CUTTER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT.26, I919.
W w, myw
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOWARD KRESS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
CUTTER.
Application filed September 26, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. Knnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful improvements in Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutting or shearing devices and more particularly to a cutter for shearing rivets and bolts and has for a primary object the provision of a cutter in which the knives are so arranged that a clean flat out will be accomplished.
In the majority of bolt and rivet cutters, the former are not out iiush with the surface of the nut, a V-shaped portion usually projecting and which must be filed down to provide a neat finish. This is especially desirable in carriage, automobile work and other light industries.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a cutter for shearing bolts, which will cut the bolt flush and flat with the outer surface of the nut, rendering it unnecessary to finish the same with a file. It is also the purpose of the invention to provide a device for shearing rivets in which the rivet will be cut flat and smooth and a suflicient portion of the rivet (about inch) left projecting beyond the object to be riveted, so that a proper riveting may be affected and the best results accomplished, the device being so constructed and arranged as to leave this amount of rivet for this purpose. It further facilitates the operation of riveting by providing a smooth fiat out.
For the accomplishment of the above and other objects, the invention resides in a number of knives and cutting edges and their relative arrangement with relation to the pivot which connects the jaws carrying the knives.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a tool embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the connecting bar carried by one of the jaws.
Figs. 3 and 1 are similar views of the jaw portions of the pivoted members.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention includes Specification of Letters Patent.

a pair of handle members, which are indicated at 1 and 2.
The handle member 1 is provided at one end with a knife or cutting jaw S, which cooperates with a jaw 4;, carried by the handle member 2. These jaws are pivotally secured together, as indicated at 5, the pivot passing through the jaws and through a plate or bar 6, the opposite ends of which are connected to the jaw 3 of the handle 1, the jaw 4 operating between this plate and the jaw 3. The jaws 3 and 4 provide a boltcutting tool, having their opposed edges beveled and sharpened to provide cutting edges 9. These cutting edges operate on the same plane and are of the same relative curvature, so that they may be forced together to provide a straight flat out, and owing to their position, may cut close to the outer face of the nut. To provide for the proper relative position of the cutting edges 9, the jaw 3 is secured upon the face of the handle member 1, one of the bolts 7 passes through an opening 7 of the jaw and through a similar opening in the handle member 1. To prevent pivotal movement of the jaw 3, there is provided a pin 7", which passes through the jaw 3, the handle member 1 and the connecting bar 6.
Also carried by the jaw 4, is a knife 8, the latter being positioned upon the undersurface of the jaw between the latter and the handle member 1, and for the purpose of acc'ommodating the knife 8, the handle memher 1 is recessed, as indicated at 10, the said knife 8 operating across the bottom of this recess. The handle member 1 is provided with an opening 11, which communicates with the recess 10 and the walls of this opening provide a cutting edge for cooperation with the knife 8, to form a rivet cutting tool, the thickness of the handle member 1 at this point serving as a gage to regulate the length of the rivet left projecting after the cut for the purpose of leaving sufficient material to accomplish a proper riveting 7 operation.
It will be seen from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, that the invention provides a double tool, One of which will effectually cut a bolt clean and flush with the outer surface of the nut, and the other cutting a rivet, leaving a portion of the same projecting beyond the object to be riveted. The invention is further so constructed that it cannot cut over-sized bolts claimed is:
or rivets, so that it cannot be subjected to undue strain or abuse.
As the knife 9 of the jaw 3 is removable and may be renewed or sharpened, when necessary, it is also desirable to provide for the renewal of knives or cutting edges 9 and 8. For this purpose the jaw 4 is separate from the handle 2, the adjacent ends of the said jaw and handle overlapping and being secured by bolts or screws 12.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is A cutter comprising a pair of members pivoted together, handles extending therefrom, one of said members being provided with a relatively wide head having an opening and also having an arcuate shaped inwardly curved jaw extending therefrom, a concaved cutting edgefor said jaw, a relatively narrow jaw extending from the other member, oppositely disposed convexed cutting edges provided upon the narrow jaw, one of said convexed edges cooperating with the cutting edge of the wide jaw and the other cutting edge cooperating with the walls of the opening formed in the last mentioned jaw.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature.
