EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application filed November 12, 1920. Serial No. 423,564.v
To all w hom t may concern v Be it known that I, GIOVANNI BALDI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in extension tables and has for one of its objects to provide a table of the extensible type wherein the leaves provided for varying the length of the table are permanently carried by the table.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an extension table wherein the leaves for varying the length of the table are hingedly connected together and supported on a transverse bar permanently secured to the table with the leaves folded beneath the table top when in inoperative position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an extension table wherein a series of hingedly connected leaves are permanently carried by the table and are capable of manipulation to present any one or series of the leaves for varying the length of the table.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,-
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an extension table constructed in accordance with the present invention, the extension leaves being folded to inoperative position beneath the table top,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view showing the table extended to its limit of movement,
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the table in extended position,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view showing vthe extension leaves partially collapsed and in position to be folded beneath the double top and Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on line VI-VI of Fig. 4 showing the slide guides for the table end.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a with dove-tail shaped flanges 7 thatY are' engaged by blocks 8 having dove-tail shaped recesses carried by the ends of the longitudlnal bar 9, the inner ends of the strips 6 having depending' blocks 10 secured thereto as shown in Fig. 4 for engagement with theends 8 of the bar 9 to limit the opening movement of the top sections 1.
The extension leaf construction embodies a provision of a transverse center board 11 secured as at 12 midway the ends of the bar 8, with the upper edge of the board 11 spaced below the table top sections 1. Se-
cured by' butt hinges 13 to the upper edge of the center board 11 are the central leaves 14 and 15 carrying depending flanges 14 and 15 respectively at their adjacent edges to overlie the upper edge of the board 11 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. A centering pin 16 is carried by the inner edge of the leaf 15 and is adapted to be received in a socket 17 provided in the corresponding end of the leaf 14. Lateral leaves 18 and 19 are hingedly connected as at 2O to the outer edges of the leaves 14 and 15, the adjacent edges of the leaves 14-18 and 15-19 carrying center pins and sockets 21. The leaf sections 18 carry centering pins 22 for reception in sockets 23 provided in one of the facing strips 5 while the leaf 19 is provided upon its outer edge with sockets 24 to receive centering pins 25 carried by the adjacent facing strip 5.
When the table sections 1 are moved inwardly to their inward limit with the leaves folded beneath the table top sections as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the leaves 18 and 19 are moved upon their hinge connections 20 with the adjacent leaves 14 and 15 to be disposed within the flange extensions 14 and 15 0f the leaves 14 and 15 respectively and when so positioned, the table is locked against extending movement by the hooks 26 carried by the opposite ends of the table shown in Fig. 4, the hooks 26 are disengaged from the lugs 27 and the table top sectionsV moved away from each other and guided by `the dove-tail connections between the ends of the bar 9 and the strips Gcarried by the top sections 1, this movement being limited by the blocks `10V engaging the ends of the bar 9. The leaves are tlen unfolded from the position shown in F ig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 5 and moved upwardly upon the hinge connections 13 and 20 to aline the leaves with the upper faces of the table top sections, causing the several eentering pins to enter the adjacent sockets with the end leaves 18 and 19 engaging the facing strips 5 by the pin and socketconnection. A slight movement of the table sections 1 toward each other will maintain the leaves elevated and in true alinement with the top sections of the table. With .,this'construction, it is possible to present one or more of the leaves in line with the table top for extension purposes with the leaves securely retained in this position.
While there is `herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
In an extension table wherein end top sections are guided in their movements by a longitudinal guide frame, a transverse' Center board fixed to said frame, a plurality of j hingedly connected leaves hinged t0 opposite sides of the center board, and depending flanges carried by the leaves adjacent the center board to provide lateral spaces when the leaves are folded for the outer leaves to fold against the inner leaves and lie in the spaces adjacent the center board.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
