UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. WRIGHT, OF CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROLLO MARPLE, 01-? CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN.
GAS-BURNER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application filed March 2, 1920. Serial No. 362,797.
T 0 all w ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. \Vniorrr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Burner Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gas burner attachments and has for a primary object the provision of an attachment which will be readily applied to gas burners of various forms to inclose the same and thereby increase the efiiciency of the burner by preventing the products of combustion and rays of heat from escaping before reaching the pan or other utensil positioned above the burner.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a gas burner attachment of the above stated character which may be applied to gas burners during the construction of the same or after they have been completed.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of agas burner attachment of the above stated character which is composed of the minimum number of parts and which may be readily applied or removed as desired.
The invention has for a still further object the provision of a gas burner attachment of the character stated which will be inexpensive to manufacture and which will be highly efficient in use.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of coiiperating elements as hereinafter specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a circular form of a gas burner with my attachment applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof wlth parts in section.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, with the gas feeding pipe in section to show more clearly the attachment.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the lower plate of the attachment.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the upper plate.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the lower plate of the attachment which is preferably of circular form and provided with a small opening 2 in its rear or inner portion which rests upon the burner supporting bar 3 of the stove so that the depending burner positioning lug 1 of the conventional form of burner 5 may extend through the lower plate 1 and also through an opening 6 of the bar 3 which registers with the opening 2 of the plate 1. The conventional form of burner 5 disclosed is of the circular type with a central opening 7 beneath which the solid portion of the plate 1 extends only a short distance to permit air to pass upwardly through the central openings as is customary in this type of burner to provide a proper mixture of air and gases for combustion. The plate 1 is provided with a comparatively large opening 8 in its forward portion to accommodate the depending forward portions 9 of the burner 5 with which is connected the gas feed pipe 10 of the burner 5. The plate 1 also has a pair of parallel slits 11 forming a tongue 12 therebetween which may be bent downwardly for engagement with the upper side of the gas feed pipe 10, the free edge 13 of the tongue 12 being curved or concaved to conform with the pipe 10 and properly assist in supporting the plate 1 in proper position. Engaged upon the upper face of the plate 1 is the cylindrical reflector 1 1 which surrounds the entire burner 5 beneath the vessel supporting fingers which ordinarily project inwardly toward one another at a spaced distance above the burner 5 and forming. part of a supporting open lid upon which any vessel may be placed above the burner. I have also provided a small upper plate 15 of cylindrical form which may be placed upon the inner or central portion of the burner 5, over the openings 7 thereof, if desired.
It will be seen from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that this attachment completely in closes the burner 5 and will serve to retain the heat within the reflector 14 and direct the rays of heat to the Vessel positioned above the burner instead of permitting unopposed spreading of the heat and wasting of a large portion thereof. The attachment may be readily applied or removed or if preferred the attachment may be incorporated as a part of the burner when manufactured without a material increase in cost thereof. The shape of the reflector or retainer may be varied and the other parts altered to adapt the device to various forms of burners.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. A gas burner attachment comprising the combination with a centrally apertured burner and the gas feed pipe and burner supporting member, of a plate engaged upon said gas feed pipe and said supporting member, a portion of said plate being positioned beneath the burner, a heat reflecting member mounted on said plate and surrounding the burner, and a heat reflecting plate mounted on said burner over the central aperture thereof.
2. A as burner attachment comprising the com ination with a gas burner having a depending centering lug, a supporting member having an opening to receive said lug, and a gas feed pipe connected with said burner, of a supporting plate engaged above said gas feed pipe and having a depending tongue resting on said ipe, said plate having an aperture to reglster with the aperture of the supporting member to accommodate the centering lug of the burner, said plate extending between the burner and the supporting member, a heat reflecting member mounted on said plate and surrounding said burner, and a heat reflecting plate engaged over the opening of the burner in wardly of the gas burner jet opening.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. WRIGHT.
