LOCK;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 26,1921.
Application filed November 10, 1919. Serial No. 336,900.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr EVANS, a citizen of Canada, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to a lock which is more particularly designed for use on sliding doors, but which can also be used for other purposes, if desired.
It is the object of this invention to provide a lock for use on sliding garage doors and for similar purposes which can be readily adapted for use on either right or left-hand doors and also easily adjusted for the purpose of taking up wear and adapting the lock to the relativeposition of the 7 door and the frame with which it coopen ates; which is so organized that the lock cannot be openedfrom the outside by lifting the door, which is provided with improved means for holding the hook or latch of the door yieldinglyin its operative position, which is so mounted on the door that the same cannot be tampered with-from the exterior of the building, and which is provided with an improved key mechanism for operating the hook or latch.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary horizontal section of a door and frame equipped with my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the means for guiding the hook or latch and holding the same yieldingly in its operatlve position. fFig. 3 is a perspective view of the hub which carries the hook and the retaining pin or key whereby this hub is Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line 66, Fig. 1. Fig 7 is a perspective View showing the plurality of 'locking disks and spacing rings forming part of the locking mechanism.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Y
10 represents one of the upright members of the door frame and 11 one of the upright edge portions of; the door which is adapted" to slide horizontally toward and from a ver- Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tical groove 12 in'the edge of the door which isjournaled horizontally andtrans- .versely in a bearing opening 14: formed in the door and provided at its inner end with a handle 15 forturning the same. This handle preferably has the form of a split ring, the opposite ends 16 of which are turned inwardly and engage with opposite ends of a transverse opening 17 in the hub which formsa pivotal connection between this handle and the hub, so that this handle can be swung outward for use when it is desired to turn the hub andthe same can also be swung inward so as to lie close to the side of: the door when-the handle is not in use. a bearing 18 formed inthe "rear end of a sleeve 19 which is arranged in an opening in the'front or outer partof the door. This sleeve is provided at its front end with a face plate 20 which latter is rigidly secured to the. door so as to be incapable of easy removal by means of bolts 21 passing through the door and engagingtheir heads 22 with the face plate 20, while the rear ends of the bolts pass through an inner or rear face plate 23 arranged on the rear'side ofthe door, these parts, being, rigidly secured together by means of screw nuts 24 applied to these bolts and bearing against the rear side of the plate. 23 and upsetting or rivetscrew nuts, as shown at 25 in Fig. 12
Means are providedffor permitting the' hub to rotate toa limited extent with reference to thesleeve 19 but preventing longitudinal separation therefrom,-- this being preferably; effected by means ofia pin 26 securedtransversely in the side of the sleeve 19 and engaging with a segmental groove 27 arranged circumferentially on the hub, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. I
26 represents the shank of a-latch or hook which is arranged ina recess 29 extending from the hub 13 to the vertical edge of the door, and which hasits bill or beak 30' e tending beyond thevertical edge of the door, while its inner or rear end 31 is provided with an external screw thread which engages with an internally-threaded opening Atits frOnt end the hub turnsiin' 32'arranged diametrically in the hub' be tween the ends thereof. The outer portion of this hook passes through vertical slots 33 and 34 formed respectively in the guide plate 35 which is secured to the vertical edge of the door by means of screws 36 and a catch plate 37 which is secured to the vertical edge of the frame at the bottom of the recess 12 therein by means of screws 38, said frame being p'rovidedwith a recess 39 in 'rear'of the catch plate 37 so as to perini-t the bill of the hook to engage with the inner or rear side of the catch plate-37 below the lowerend of its slot 34 for connecting the door with the frame. By turning the hook on the hub the screw connec tion between these parts permits of adjusting the distance between the hub and the bill 30, so that the bill engages properly with the catch plate and thereby permits of taking up wear and also facilitates mounting the lock. By means of the screw connection between the hook and the hub it is also possible to reverse the lock with reference to the hub and permit the lock to be used either as a right-hand lock or a lefth'and'lock without requiring any alteration in the construction, and thus avolding the I necessity of making two forms of locks to meet this requirement. The outer face of 'the bill or beak of the hook is beveled, as
shown at 40, so that when the door is slid into its closed position, the bill-of the hook will'engafge the catch plate adjacent to the lower end of its slot 34 and lift the hook, so as to permit itsbill to pass automatically behind the catch plate in a manner common to this type of'lock'.
The means for yieldingly holding the hook in its depressed operative position which embody my improvements, are constructed as follows:
' 41 represents a vertically-movable" follower which is guided on the rear or inner side of the guide plate 35 and is provided at its lower end with a notch or recess 42 which receives the upper edge of the shank of the hook. Projectingupwardly from the follower is a guide rod 43 which slides at its upper end in a tubular guide 44 arranged on the rear side of the guide plate35, as shown in Fig. 6; Surrounding the guide rod 43 is a spring45'which bears at its'lower. "end against the follower and at its upper end against the guide tube 43, and which operatesto yieldingly hold the hook in its lowered or operative position. The fol- I lower is guidedin its downward movement r and also limlted 111" its movement in this direction by means ofa ushaped guide, the horizontal legs 46 and 47 of which are secured'to the rear side of the guide plate 35 while the vertical cross bar 48 thereof ex- 1 tends over. the follower and is received by a notch 49 on the inner side of the latter, as
shown in Fig. 2. As the follower rises and falls, the same is held against lateral displacement by means of the cross bar 48, and by engaging with the lower leg 47 of the U-shaped guide, the downward movement of the same is limited and disengagement of the guide rod 43 from the tubular guide 44 is by this means prevented.
' In order to prevent the bill or nose of the hook from being disengaged from the catch plate 37 by lifting or jacking up the door,
means are provided for interlocking the 7 guide plate 35 and the catch plate 37 so as to prevent the doorfrom being lifted. This is preferably effected by means of a retain- 111 lu 50 arran ed on the outer side of the b c guide plate 35 and pro ect1ng intothe upper part of the slot 34 of the catch plate 37 when the'door is closed, so that ifan attempt is which key mechanism embodies my improvements and is constructed asfollows:
52 and 53 represent a plurality of-lock-ii'ig disks and 'spacingrings, respectively,- which are arranged in a longitudinal row within the front part of the sleeve'1'9 and alternate with each other. These rings and disks are held against turning within the sleeve 19,
this being accomplished for instance by means of a lug54 proj ecting laterally from each ring and disk into a longitudinal groove 55 in the adjacent part of the sleeve 19, as shown in Fig 1; Each of the disksis provided-with an elongated opening 56,
the openings of the several disks being in line with the openings in the spacing rings .53 and also in line with notches 57 formed in the front end of the hub 13 and in line with an opening 58 formed in the face plate of the sleeve '19,- as best shownin Fig. 1.
The key is adapted to pass with its shank 59 through the corresponding opening 58 of the face plate, the several locking disks 52 and spacing rings 53, and engage a pair of prongs 60 at its inner or rear endwith the notches '57 in the front end of the hub for turning the latter together with the hook' and releasing the bill 30 from the catch plate 37, this turning movement of the key being effected by means of ahandle 61 arranged at the outer endthereof. The shank or body of the key is provided at its opposite longitudinal edges with notches 62 which are adapted to register with the corresponding portions of the faceplate 20 and the several lockingv disks52, and thereby permit the key to be turned for operating the hub and the hook connected therewith. It therefore becomes necessary to employ a key having its notches 62 properly located in order to permit of operating this look. By varying the thickness of the locking disk 52 and the spacing rings or washers 53 and employing a key having its notches 62 constructed accordingly, various permutations or combinations may be formed which will permit of making each look different from others, and thereby insure greater security against tampering.
I claim is my invention:
