CANNON, J r., citizens of the United States, residing in the city of New York, county of New York, and city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, respectively, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Hat Protectors and Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

.This invention relates to a combined hat protector and covering for a raincoat.

The general object of the invention is to provide a hat protector having a construction which will enable it-to be used as a covering for a folded-raincoat, but which can be readily expanded into an open condition adapting it to form a covering to protect ones hat. The protector is preferably formed of waterproof material, such as waterproof paper, which is relatively inexpensive, and it is expected to be used with a raincoat, also formed of inexpensive waterproof material. Such a raincoat can be folded into a very small space and can be placed within the hat protector, so that the hat protector is folded and tied up about it, thereby forming a neat package. The hat protector is provided with a cord or cords which enable it to be tied or secured about the raincoat and which also operate, when the envelop is being used as a hat protector, to pass under ones chin to hold the hat protector over the hat. It is intended that these packages, consisting of a hat protector and a raincoat contained therein, will be kept in public places so as to be available to persons who are accidentally caught in the rain. The hat protector, of course, should be particularly useful to prevent injury to relatively expensive hats, such as worn by ladies; until used, the hat protector operates as an envelop for the raincoat which is to be worn with it.

Further objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the novel features, and in the general combination of parts to be particularly described hereinafter, all of which contribute toproduce a simple and efficient combined hat protector and envelop. A preferred embodiment of our invention will be particularly described in the following specification, while the broad scope of our invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a plan showing the complete package in which the hat protector is performing the function of an envelop for a folded raincoat;

-'Fig. 6 is a plan of a blank particularly illustrating the manner in which the blank is folded in order to give it the shape of a hat protector.

In practising the invention, we form a concavo-c-onvex envelop (see Fig. 4), which is preferably constructed of inexpensive waterproof paper. This envelop has two side walls 2, which in the open position of the envelop, form a dihedral angle with each other. Fig. 2 shows one of these hat protectors lying open on its side so as to enable it to receive a raincoat 3 which is folded up into a neat package of substantially rectangular form. The two side walls 2 of the protector are connected together at a common folding edge 4. When the folded raincoat 3 has been laid in the open envelop as in Fig. 2, the upper side wall 2 is folded downwardly over the raincoat on the longitudinally disposed edge 4, and the protector is then folded on the lines 5, 5, 6 and 7 so that the end portions 8 of the side walls form outside flaps or folds 9 lying on the outside of the package. These portions of the pro tector are preferably provided with ribbons or cords 10 which may be passed around the package and tied together in a how 11. (See Fig. 1.)

The side walls 2 are connected together at their end portions 8 in any suitable manner so as to give the protector a concavo-convex form. This is preferably accomplished by having the material 'in the end portions 8 overlap so as to form layers 12 which are connected together by fastening devices in {he form of cardboard buttons 13 and eyeets 14.

folded at its ends so asto form a plurality of the layers 12. We prefer, however to form the hat protector out of a one-piece blank having the general characteristics of the blank 15, shown in Fig. 6. This blank is of oblong or oval form, having ends 16, the edges of which may be struck as an are about a center 17. From these points 17, radial folding lines 18 are indicated whlch act as guides in folding the ends of the blank into the layers or tapered pla1ts 12 which are formed out of the material lying between the lines 18.

After the raincoat has been put on, the hat protector 1 may be applied over ones hat 19. (See Fig. 3.) In order to hold the hat protector on, each cord 10 is passed under the chin and its end is wrapped several times around the button 13, which is located at the opposite point on the hat protector.

This simple means for securin the cords enables them to be readily detac ed in order to take off the hat protector.

After using the raincoat and hat protector, the raincoat can be readily folded up again and replaced Within the protector, as an envelop, which may be then folded into a neat package as illustrated in Fig 1. It is understood that the embo iment of the invention described herein is only one of the many embodiments our invention may take, and we do not wish to be limited in the practice of our invention nor in our claims, to the particular embodiment set forth.

What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A combined hat protector and covering for a raincoat consisting of an envelop having two opposite elongated side walls connected together along a folding edge and connected together adjacent their ends so as to permit the side walls to swing apart and assume a position forming a dihedral angle to each other at said edge, thereby enabling the envelop to cover ones hat, said side walls operating to fold together to cover a folded raincoat, and cords attached to the envelop for securing the same about the folded raincoat, and having means for attaching the same to opposite sides of the envelop, for securing the envelop in its open condition over ones hat.

2. A combined hat protector and covering for a raincoat consisting of an envelop having two side walls connected together along a folding edge and connected together adj acent the1r ends so as to permit the side walls to swing apart and assume a position forming a dihedral a-ngleto each other at said edge, thereby enabling the envelop to cover ones hat, said side walls operatmg to fold together to cover a folded raincoat, a cord attached tothe envelop at one side of the same, and a button attached to the envelop at an opposite point, enabling the cord to be passed under ones chin and wrapped around the button to secure the protector over ones hat, said cord operating means for securing the envelop around a folded raincoat.

3. A combined hat protector and cover for a folded raincoat, consisting of a single elongated sheet of waterproof material, the material of the wall at each end of the sheet being disposed in overlapped layers, means for attaching said layers together to give the protector a concavo-convex form with two opposite elongated walls connected together at a longitudinally disposed edge and forming a dihedral angle at said edge to enable the protector to open and cover ones hat, a cord and means for attaching the cord to the protector at opposite ends thereof and adjacent said overlapped layers, said cord operating to connect the opposite sides of the protector when worn over the hat, said. opposite side walls operating to cover opposite sides of a folded raincoat, and said overlapped end portions operating to form opposite flaps to fold over the folded raincoat and enable the protector to be secured by the cord as an envelop over the raincoat.

4. A combined hat protector and covering for a folded raincoat, consisting of an en velop having two elongated oppositely disposed side walls connected together along a folded edge and forming a dihedral angle at said folded edge enabling the said side walls to open apart to facilitate the envelops beng applied over ones hat, said envelop havmg end portions connecting said side walls, each end portion having a fastener for a cord enabling the cord to secure the hat protector over ones hat, said walls operating to cover opposite sides of a folded raincoat, and said end portions operating to form folded flaps connected b when the cover forms an enve op for the ralncoat.
