Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. December 23, 1919. Serial No. 346,857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. GLAssoo, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of rinderson, county of Madison, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Paring Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a vegetable peeler or parer, especially adapted for potatoes and the like, and formed from a flat strip of sheet metal.
One feature of the invention is the plura-lity of angularly protruding knives stamped from themetal and slightly spaced therefrom to the extent of the thickness of the peeling, so as not to dig far enough into the vegetable to be wasteful, andthe slots of suflicient size to permit the peelings to readily pass through the body of thepeeler.
Another feature of the invention lies in the provision of an eye removing portion, which also serves for a thumb or finger piece, which maybe utilized for digging into rotten portions and removing theeyes of potatoes. By means. of this device the potato or similar vegetable may be rapidly peeled by simply scraping the peelingfrom the surface thereof by holding it between the fingers.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of the novel and improved paring device looking at the knives thereof. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the pairing device and shows a combined eye remover and finger or thumb piece. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed view showing the slots and knife blanks. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4 and shows the manner in which the knife blanks are positioned with respect to the parer and the way the blanks are sharpened to form the knife blades.
In the drawings 10 indicates a flat plate body portion from which the improved paring device is formed. To those skilled in the art it will be understood that the blank for forming the paring device may be out from a long strip of sheet metal. The blanks so out are then slotted in any suitable mannergas illustrated in Fig. 4:. Here- 7 in the slots 11 are shown in staggered relation and each slot is preferably channel shaped, so that the, knife blanks 12 are formed with parallel knifeedges 13. The
slots as shown are suitably spaced apart and in rows, each alternate row having its,
slots opposite the body portionspace between adjacent. slots in the adjacent rows. By thus arranging the slots, the knife blanks will remove the peeling from the vegetable or the like without leaving any strips of peeling upon the vegetable. slots are shown channel shaped, the same may be otherwise formed, such, as an open triangle. The channel shape, however, is preferred because of the strengthimparted to the portion between the knife blank and the plate portion.

V The edgesof the plateportion 10 are bent upwardly to form grip handles or grasping portions 17. -The upper and outer 'edgesof said graspingportions are bent, as shown in Fig. 2, to form-a beaded edge 18, so that the fingers may readily engage said grasping portion and securely grip the same without being cut by a sharp edge. Asshown in Figs2 and 8, the eye remover and thumb piece 15 extends outwardly from said plate 10, while the grasping edge 17 extends. up
wardly therefrom and is provided with an outwardly turned head 18. thumb or finger is placed upon the projection 15, the paring device is firmly gripped between the yielding grasping end 17 and the bead 18, and is also held in position'by the finger or thumb resting against the edges of the U shaped slot 14;. If desired, a similar projection 15 may be formed on the opposite ed 'e, although the same is not necessary.
I s shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the knife blanks 12 extend downwardly from said plate portion and may be bent in that position in any suitable manner. When bent, as shown, the upper face 19 of said blank portion 12 provides an inclined slide upon which the paring removed by the knife is carried upwardly and away from the same. The knife edges 13 are herein shown sharpened in any suitable manner, the blanks preferably having their outer edges removed so that the cutting face 20 is formed, which is substantially parallel to the plate portion 10. It will be obvious. to those skilled in the art that the knife blanks may be otherwise downwardly bent or may be otherwise sharpened. However, the preferred construction is as shown, since the edges of the paring knives may be re-sharpened readily by engaging the paring device upon a suitable sharpening or grinding surface. In this maner the novel and improved paring device may be re-sharpened until the knives have been substantially sharpened away.
From the foregoing description of the individual blades described in the formation of the novel and improved paring device, it will be understood that the device may be formed by these operations, to-wit: Cutting the blank from a strip of sheet metal, said blank remaining in the punch press in which it is simultaneously slotted with channel shaped slots and with a U shaped slot, con tinued movement of said press will bend upwardly the grasping ends or edges of said plate and simultaneously therewith the knife blanks are bent and inclined to said plate and the final stage of the movement, said press will crimp and form the bead upon the upper edge of the grasping ends. The
- formed blank is then removed from the press, held to a suitable grinding surface which sharpens the knife edges and forms the same as described substantially parallel to theplate portion from which the same was punched. The essential steps in the operation are the punching, bending and sharpening, and by this means and in this manner, the novel and improved paring device is formed, as shown.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a paring device, the combination of a plate provided with a hand engageable end extending angularly of the plate and a lug formed from the angularly extending end and extending angularly of said end to form a finger support. I
2. In a paring device, the combination of a plate portion provided with oppositely positioned hand engageable ends extending angularly of the plate, and paring means between said ends, and a finger supporting lug extending angularlyof one of said ends and formed from the same.
3. In a paring device, the combination of a plate provided with paring means and a hand engageable end extending angularly of the plate, and a finger supporting lug formed from the angularly extending end and lying substantially parallel to said plate;
l. In a paring device, the combination of a plate provided with paring means and a hand engageable end extending angularly of the plate, and a finger supporting lug formed from the angularly extending end and lying in substantially the same plane with said plate.
5. In a paring device, the combination of a plate provided with oppositely positioned,
hand engageable ends extending angularly of the plate and positioned upon the same side thereof, paring means between said ends and positioned upon the opposite side of said plate, each of said angularly extending ends upon its free edge being provided with anoutwardly turned edge to form a grippingportion upon each of said angularly extending ends, whereby the paring device may be grasped in one hand.
6. In a paring device, thecombination of a plate provided with oppositely positioned hand engageable ends extending angularly of the plate andpositioned upon the same side thereof, paring means between said ends and positioned upon the opposite side of said plate, each of said angularly extending ends upon its free edge being provided with an outwardly turned edge to form a gripping portion upon each of said angularly extending ends, whereby the paring.
