Description
E. M. PAULEY.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED APR- 29, 1920- 1,373,201 Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
B i; i I K/ A TTORNE Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD M. PAULEY, OF BIRDSVIEW, WASHINGTON.
wnrmcn.
Application filed April 29, i920. 1 Serial no. 377,565.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. PAULEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Birdsview, in the county of Skagit and tate of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to improvements in a pipe or nut wrench, and has for its object the provision of means for readily adjusting the wrench to fit different sized pipes or nuts and firmly holding this adjusted position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide means for adjusting the jaw members to fit a predetermined size of pipe or nut, and either to lock the same before or after the a plication of the tool to the work.
A still urther object of the invention is to rovide means for readily cleaning or repairing the working parts thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the followin description.
In this descri tion like 0 aracters of reference refer to like parts in the accompanyin drawings in which:
igure 1 is a longitudinal section of the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the preferred form.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig 1.
ig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, with the tubular handle 14, rotated through an angle of 90 degrees.
F Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of 1 Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of n the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral 5 designates the usual adjustable head for use as a nut wrench, an alternate form 5 indicating a structure suitable for pipe work. The head member is mounted on a reduced shank 6, sliding within the recess 7, of the bod 8. A further reduced portion 9 is toothe as at 10 to engage a toothed air of segments 11, slidabl inserted into t e wedge-shaped slots 12 o the tubular handle 14. A still further reduced portion 15, slidably pro-' Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d M 29 1921 disclosed. Suitably secured within the handle is a spring member 20 bearing a lug 21 arranged'to normally engage the slots 18 and 19 of the reduced portion 15 aforesaid.
At the fore part of the tubular handle the bore is interiorly enlarged forming an annular shoulder 22, against which the reduced end 24 of the body 8 seats when in use, while at the same time the exterior annular shoulder 25 of the body 8 abuts the extreme forward end of the handle as shown.
The reduced end of the body 24 carries radially disposed stops 26 operating through arcuate slots 27 in the fore part of the handle and serving to limit the lateral rotation of the same to approximately a quarter turn.
To facilitate assembly and repair a door 28 is provided in the face of the handle, held in place by the screw 29.
elative spacing of the head from the working face of the body is provided for b a suitable scale 30, etched or otherwise ind1- cated on the shank 6.
To operate the wrench the handle is turned in the direction of the arrow in Fi 4 to the position indicated in this figure, wl ierein the teeth of the segments 11 are disenga ed from the teeth of the reduced ortion 9. he head 5 and the body 8 are t en adjusted to the work, or are spaced on the scale, and are locked in such spaced relation by a quarter turn of the handle in the opposite direction. Accidental interference of the toothed members durin longitudinal adjustment of the wrench is o viated b the engagement of the lug 21 in the slot 19 uring such ad'ustment;
, while engagement of the lug 21 in t e slot 18 .positively holds the parts in the locked position.
It is to be understood that the form of device herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a nut or pipe wrench of the character described, a tubular body having a work face at one end and a reduced portion at the other end, carrying projecting lugs; a tubular handle provided with a sleeve adapted to receive the reduced portion of the body, and having slots to receive said lugs, toothed segments within the handle, guide means Within the handle, a. removable door in. the side of said handle, and a resilient'locking member carrying a lug and mounted within:-
the tubular handle adjacent the door; a work head carried by a shank marked with a suitable-measuring scale and reduced in size to slidably fit the tubular body'portion, said the toothed segments within the handle, and a still further reduced portion slidably mounted in the guide means aforesaid and terminating in a stop member adapted to abut the guide means, said reduced portion having radially arranged, longitudinal slots adapted to be engaged by the aforesaid lug on the locking'member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my si nature.
EDWARD M. PAUiLEY.
