MACHIN E FOR BENDING PISTON -RINGS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 10, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Louis P. Pnossnn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Piston-Rings and the like, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to a machine for stressing and so bending metal, such as cold gray cast-iron. It is particularly adapted for so bending-piston and packing rings.
My object is to improve and simplify machines for accomplishing the foregoing results.
lln the preferred embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings,
Figure 1 is a three-quarter perspective view;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front detail view showing the roller, ring and a portion of the traclr til Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail of a portion of the ring;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing the track, support and graduated adjusting means;
Figs. Band 7 are details; and
Fig. 8 is an enlarged view partially in section of the means for adjusting or flexing the track.
In the cold manufacture of cast iron packing rings, it is desirable in order to have the rings of a true circular form when in place, to stress the ring, and it is preferable that the stress given to the ring be varied along the same. In the case of a piston ring, for
I rings of varying thickness, size or material.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a standard carrying an adjustable arm 2, provided with a support 3 for the pressure element. This pressure element for exerting pressure against the ring may be of various constructions, but I prefer a roller and in the draw ings have shown a roller 4 which is provided with a series of teeth or pro ectlons around its circumference.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Serial No. 296,108.
5 is an uncut piston ring. 6 is a support for the ring while being operated on, which, as shown, may be provided with a plurality of grooves substantially fitting the width of the piston rings to be operated on. instead of making the track of circular form, ll preter to have it straight, but other forms may be used if desired. In the present embodr ment 1 have shown it in the form of a bridge, the track proper being held at each end by supports 7 and 8 which are rounded at their lower edges. lhe track is adjustable in the supports. by loosening the T-headed screwbolts 9 to 12, these heads fitting in slots in the bed 13. j
The track and roller are relatively movable, and I prefer to accomplish this by moving the track, which in this embodiment of my invention may be done by giving it a reciprocating motion such, for example, as
in order to vary the bending pressure at D different portions of the work operated on, I prefer to make the track slightly flexible so that it may be flexed into the desired shape, in order'to give theproper varying pressures wished for. In the present embodiment l have accomplished this by providing between the track and the bed an adjustable means 15, which, in the present example, llhave made in the form of a threaded bolt 16 and nut, the latter carrying a rounded head 17 pressing against the underside of the track. A suitable micrometer gage, such as 18, may be provided in order that the adjustment may be accurately graduated. By screwing up the nut 15, the center or other desired portion of the track may be flexed upward, as indicated in dotted lines in'Fig. 5 (somewhat exaggerated), the traclcbecoming a solid surface having the desired curvature, and when the bed is reciprocated, the pres. sure exerted upon the ring will gradually increase to the center of the track and then gradually diminish. By a construction of this character, th pressure applied to the or after slotting them. It is desirable to grind the rings but this may be done before desired. It will be obvious that my invention is not limited to operating upon a narrow ring, as wider rings, virtual cylinders or pot castings may be operated on in the same manner. By making the roller of suitable width, several rings may be rolled at the same time.
In order to adjust the roll or other pres sure element toward and away from the work, I have mounted the roll on a shaft 21 carried by the arm 3, and which shaft has an extension 22 eccentric to the axis of the shaft. The roller is pivoted on this extension. The arm 3 is split, as shown, and provided with a clamping screw 23 as shown in Fig. 2, which may be operated to cause the split portions of the arm to rasp the shaft with considerable friction. he handle or arm 24 may be provided by which the eccentric shaft may be turned. thus raising the roll from the work or moving it down into engagement therewith.
In order to determine and, if desirable. vary the least pressure applied by the roll. I have provided a construction which will indicate the least pressure and which may be adjusted as desired. This may be in the form of a spring scale 25 attached at one end to the handle 24 and at the other end to a cable 26 wound around the shaft of a ratchet and wheel 27. By suitably operating the ratchet wheel 27, any initial tension desired may be exerted on the handle 2& and therefore by the roller on the ring. The operator also may press down on the handle 24 in order to release the roller from contact with the ring.
I am aware that my invention. may be embodied in a variety of forms without departing from the primary purpose, and I therefore do not limit my claims to the particular embodiment or embodiments of my invention herein illustrated or described.
