To all itmay concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Daubers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to that class thereunder known as fountain blacking brushes of that type in which the brush is attached to the stopper of the bottle in which the liquid blacking is put up for the market.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify devices of this character so as to be comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and reliable and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a brush of the above stated character embodying a tubular shank having a cup or head at one end for receiving the liquid applying brush, and adapted to have its opposite end inserted into the bottle of liquid blacking, and a plug for closing the inlet end of the tubular shank when put up by the manufacturer for shipment, and removed by the consumer in order to properly apply the liquid blacking to the brush.
I further contemplate provlding a stopper or plug for closing the cup or head, which by the removal of the same by the consumer, will permit of the insertion of a valve which will control the feed of the liquid blacking to the brush.
With these objects in view, and others as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device with portions in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the attachment; Fig. 3 is a rear view with the cap removed therefrom;
Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a bottom end view. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the closing cap. Referring more particularly to the drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, A designates a bottle or other receptacle in which is contained a liquidblacking or dressing of anysuitable character, and
having a cork 5 inserted in theneckfi ofthe bottle: 1 This cork or stopper: 5 is provided witha singleppening or bore 7 The dauber attachment B of substantially T-shaped form and embodying a hollow shank 8- has formed at its upper. end a cup-shaped head 9, the closed end wall of which is formed with an opening 10 for 1 supplying the bristles or daubing material 11 with the liquid blacking. The stem or shank 8 of the cup-shapedhead is inserted within the bore or opening 7 of the stopper and opens out within the cup-shaped head 9, all of which will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. The inlet end of the tubular shank, when put up by the manufacturer for ship.- ment, is closed through the medium of a plug 12, such plug being removed by the consumer in order to apply the fluid to the daubing device B. The cup-shaped head is provided with a hollow cylindrical bore 13 opening out through one end of the cupshaped head, and the open end of the cupshaped head, when the goods are put up by the .manufacturer for shipment is closed through the medium of a cylindrical cap 1 1, such cap being removed and taken out by the consumer. inorder to apply in the bore or valve chamber 13 of the cup-shaped head, a
valve 15. This valve 15 constitutes a hollow stem 16 provided with an elongated port 17 and due to the fact that the valve 15 is rotatably mounted within the chamber 13, when the port 17 is in registration with the inlet end 18 of the shank, and the receptacle is handled, the fluid contents thereof will be permitted to flow into the daubing material or brush 11. In other words, the primary purpose of this valve 15 is to obtain the desired fiow of the liquid within the bottle the advantagesof construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this in vention relates, and while I have described v the principles of operation of the invention, 7 together with the devicewhichI now considerto be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device and of equal diameter throughout its length formed integral .with and crosswise of the out through one being mounted in the head and controlling chamber having an apertured wall provided in one end thereof and the opposite end of the chamber opening out through one end of the head, a rotatable plug having a slot opening end thereof and said plug the outlet of the fluid, the closed end wall of the chamber serving as an abutment for the plug to register the slot thereof with the tubular shank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
