LEROY J .GAINES, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES PARKER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT'IN CARTRIDGE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,987, dated March 18, 1873.
To allv whom it may concern? Be it known that I, LEROY J. GAINES, of
v West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Cartridge-Belt; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection. with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a perspective view of a portion of the belt.
This invention relates to a device for convenien tly carrying cartridge-shells for breechloading sporting-arms; and it consists in a belt of leather, or other flexible material, to be clasped around the body, constructed with a ledge upon its lower edge, upon which the cartridges'rest, and with a series of elastic clasps, each independent of the other, and each constructed to grasp the cartridge-shell, as more fully hereinafter described.
A is the belt, constructed upon its lower edge with.a ledge, B, preferably done by stitching to the belt a narrow strip of leather.
Along the belt a thin strip, 0, of metal is placed, and onto this a series of clasps, D, more or less in number, are each riveted to the belt through the strip O. The strip of metal (3 gives a firmness to the clasp that would not be attained if set directly upon the 7 surface of the belt. These clasps are made elastic, so that a cartridgecase may be easily pressed within the grasp of the clasp, as denoted at E in the drawing, and may be easily drawn therefrom, yet will hold the cartridge with sufficient power to prevent its accidental removal. The heads of the cartridges rest upon the continuous ledge B on the belt below.
I claim as my invention A belt, A, constructed with a ledge, B, at or near its lower ed ge, and provided with independent clasps D, more or less in number, above the said ledge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
