- Application and n ch a,
To all whom itmay concern: I
Be it known that I, HENRYG. Pn'rnnso t, a citizen of the United States, and rresident of Jewell Junction; in the county ofsHam: ilton and Stateof Iowa, have invented aficer tain' new and useful-Dumping Bed, of which thefollowing is a specification; i. u f
' he objectof my invention is to prov de a dumping bedof simple, durable and inex pensive construction. I ;V I ,t ;;v: More particularly it is my OlQ'JGChtOPI'Q vide a dumping bed having.itssbottomzdia vided into two parts, each pivoted along longitudinal lines betweenithe sideedgesotv theparts, and having atits; outer sidegedges apivoted side member, and to provldein eon-j nection therewith mechanism fortilting the bottom andside members to form the entire bed into a hopper of substantially ill-shape in cross section. v ,i g A further object is to" provide means for operating the dumping bed, adapted'to hold the bed rigidlyin position when .it s used forhauling; 21:" a j 1 With these and other objectsi'n views-my; invention consists 1 inthe. construction, ark" rangement and combination of ithe various parts of the device, whereby the ob eots eon; templatedare attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointedout. in my claims; and illustrated in the accompanying adrawlngs', in which- .0 f Figure 1 showsaiside elevation of'a dump.- i-ng bed embodying my;inventiom :1; .-Fig.r.2' shows a vertical, transverse, secs." tional View taken on the line2--2 of Fig. 1;" and :2: ix: :5: 1 1f. .6 Fig; 3 shows an inverted: planjvieiv of:the central-parts of the dumping-bed? of In the accompanying drawings :Iihave used: the reference numeral 10 to Iiindicafte;spaced; opposite side frame memberswhichxsup ort? the main part of-the'dumplng bed. he frame members 10 are connect d 'by .a {Zp1u rality of crossbrace's or y-framemembefs .1 1.

of the bed are upwardly extending arms 29. The arms 29 have their upper ends pivoted to a longitudinally extended link 30 outside one of the frame members 12, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Pivoted to ,the forward end of the link 30 is a link 32 which is pivoted to a lever 33. The lever 33 is pivotally mounted on the forward end of the forwardly extending frame member 10, and is provided with an ordinary movable pawl 34 adaptedlto coact with the notches of a sector 35. The member 26 of the middle bail is received in longitudinally arran d loops or keepers 3,6, as illus-' .Mountedon the frame members 12, ateach end of the machine are end members 37 which project laterally beyond the side members 22, as shown inFig. 2. Secured to the projecting portions of the end members '37 outside theside members 24 and 2.3 are strips or blocks 38 against which the members 22 and 23 abut when the-dumping bed is in its dumping operation.
normal position. The upper inner surfaces of the members 38 arebeveled to fit the mem-.
bers 23, as shown in Fig. '2, and the upper edges of themember 38 serve as guides and supports for the members 23 during the Secured to the inner surfaces of the end members 37 just above the " bottom members 15 and 16 and terminating within the outlines of the side members 12 are shields 39. a v c f in the practical useof my dumping bed, when a load of sand or gravel has been put in the bed it will be understood that the bails standupright, as shown, for instance in Fig.
' trated in Fig, '2.
2, for supporting the bottom members .15 and 16 in their normal positions. a
When it is desired to discharge or dump the contents of the bed, the lever 33' is grasped and shovedv forwardly, thereby swinging the arms 29 forwardly and rotatingtheportions 28 for swinging the bails forwardly underthe bottom members 15 and 16; The heaviest part of the load will be at the centerg'and will "therefore tend to force downwardly'the inner edges of the bottom members 15 and 16.
The mounting of one of the bail members 26 in the loops or guides 36 also makes the action of the lever positive in operating'the dumpingbed. VVhjen the lever is moved to position for swinging the bails forwardly, the central portions of the bottom members 15 and 16 will be forceddownwardly by the load; to their dotted line positions, as illus- It is, of course, obvious that if the bottom members should stick, the bail member 26,
' which is received in the guides or loops 36,
will force the centralportions ofthe bottoms "dewnwardlyfor starting the unloading or dumpi m e n J Y I "will be noted' that. the bottom members are pivoted between theirside edges, so as to operate the parts with minimum power.
The gravel will be dropped out through the center of the bed, and the parts may then be returned to their normal position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
It will also be noted that it is'notonly possible to'tilt the bottom members, but that the side members are pushed upwardly to their dotted line positions shown in Fig. 2, so that-when-the' bed is in dumping position the bottom members and side members have assumed positions where they are sub-.
stantially V-shaped in cross-section, which makes a construction most efiicient for discharging thedoad. V
The beveled faces 13 are when the upper edges of the. side members provided so i 12 support the bottom members, they do not interfere with the dumpingj action of the bottom members. 7 V -Some changes 'm-aybe'made 1n the construction and arrangement of the var ous parts ofmy dumping bed without departing from the real sp1rit andpurpose of my invention, and it is'my intention-to'cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalentswhich may bereasonably included within their scope.
- 7 I claim-as my invention: f v
1. A dumping bed' comprising spaced side members, bottom m'emberspivotedbetween their edges on said side members, bed side members pivoted to said bottom members at the outer edges thereof,--andmeansffor raising and loweringthe central. portions ofthe bottom members. f a
2. A dumping bed comprisi-ngspaced side members, bottom members-pivoted between their edgeson said side member's, bed side. members pivoted to said bottom members,
at the outer edges thereof, means for'raising and lowering the central portions of the bot tom members, and guide members for said bedsides.
3. In a device of the class described, spaced longitudinal frame members, bed
bottom members pivoted between'their side diately below thecentralparts of'the bed bottom memberswhen the parts" are in nor-" mal position, and having'portions extending downwardly and 'latei'ally -frm; said centre port1ons,- comprised 'withoutwardly extending members forming spindles, means for journaling said spindles, the spindles at one side of the device having arms, and means for simultaneously actuating said arms.
5. In a device of the class described, spaced longitudinal frame members, bed bottom members pivoted between their side edges on the respective frame members, bed side members pivoted at their lower edges to the outer edges of said bottom members, and means for tilting said bottom members on their pivots, said means including bail devices having central portions adapted to stand immediately below the central parts of the bed bottom members when the parts are in normal position, and having portions extending downwardly and laterally from said central portions, comprisedwith outwardly extending members forming spindles, means for journaling said spindles, the spindles at one side of the devicehaving arms,
