IMPROVEMENT IN SEALED CANS.
Specification forming part oi" Letters Patent No. 136,920, dated March 18, i873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, W. H. I. HOWE, of New York7 N. Y., have invented certain Improvements in Sealed Cans or Packages for preserving food, fruit, and other substances, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement might virtually be called a can composed of metal plates and tin-foil. '1 he parts are a cylinder or rectangular body, a bottom and two covers, one of which serves to hermetically seal the can, and another which protects the inner cover from injury. The manner of fastening this inner cover is not material; it may be cut in a circular form and held firmly against the outer cylinder by a ring, the foil being turned down in a press to give it proper shape. VWhen this is done, this inner cover is rst put in its place, the can is then tilled with the substance to be preserved, and the bottom is soldered in. The difficulties incident to cutting plate- Ametal as in the ordinary covers are entirely obviated. The necessary incision through the inner cover may be made without danger to the hands of the operator. It is obvious that a cover so thin7 it' eXposed,wou1d not bear transportation without injury to the contents of the can. The outer or slip-cover insures safety in handling` and transportation, and also serves as a protection against' dust, flies, and insects while the contents of the can are being consumed. This is of great importance,
as it insures cleanliness and prevents waste.
The whole ot' the thin cover may be easily cut out, making it more convenient to remove the contents ot' the can than where the ragged edges of an irregular incision are left project ing, as in the ordinary can. After the contents have been removed the can can be used for other purposes or returned to the mannfacturer to be refilled.
