. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED D. WALDRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brook] 11, in the county of Kings, State of New ork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earpieces, of which the following is a full, clear,'concise, and exact description.
This invention relates in general to ear pieces for acoustic apparatus and more particularly to an ear piece adapted to be used in connection with telephone receivers and similar apparatus for preventing extraneous'soundsfrom reaching the ear of the listener.

In order to obtain satisfactory operation of the telephone apparatus under various service conditions, 1t is often necessary to take certain precautions to prevent outsidenoises and d sturbances from interfering with" satisfactorily receiving of the faint sounds produced by the receivers. This is especially true in connection with telephone apparatus used in aeroplane service, either for communication between the pilot and the ob server or for communication with outside stations. For use under this condition, it is essential that special precautions be taken to exclude the excessive noises resulting from the whir of the propellers, the rush of air, and the exhaust of the engines which in some types of aeroplanes are located adjacent to the. pilot. Also in connection with apparatus used on patrol boats or chasers for detecting and determining the direction of submarine vessels, it is essential that all engine'noises and other extraneous sounds be excluded in order that the observer can with accuracy detect the faint sounds which are given out by the propellers of the sub marine vessels.
It is therefore the object of the present in-- vention to provide an ear piece which is eflicient in excluding extraneous sounds and simple in desi cheap of manufacture and I which can rea ily be placed in position.

Referring now to the drawing, an ear piece is provided having a oup-sha ed portion 5 preferably of soft s onge ru her and an insert portion 6, annu er in shape and composed of gum rubber. The ring 6, which may be cemented to the sponge rubber cup 5 or molded. therein, is arranged as shown to provide a recess in which the flange of a receiver cap 7 may be positioned to hoid the ear piece in place. An aperture is is providcd in alinement with a similar aperture in the receiver 7 in order to permit eidcient operation the receiver. The rear wail of the cupshaped member which is adapted to fit back of the ear of the user made of greater crosssectional height than the front wail 10 in order that the ear piece will more nearly conform to the shape of the head and therefore provide seal about the when the receiver held in the correct position. What is claimed is:
1 An ear piece having easily compressible Walls of sponge rubber, sei Wells being of varying the user.
2. An earpiece having easily c0mpressible Wells of rubber, the rear well being of greater cross-sectional height than that of the front wall.
3. An eer piece having easily compressible walls of sponge rubber cross-sectien to fit the head of and a plurality of vents therethrough.
4:. An ear piece composed of sponge rubber and having an insert of more rigid ma-.
terial mounted therein to provide mean: for
securing the ear piece to a receiver cap.
