HOG-FEEDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H NNIcUrr', a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilmington, in the count 1 of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Feeders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in hog feeders and the objects of my inven-.

tion are to provide a hog feeding deviceof simple and inexpensive construction which will admit of a gradual discharge of the food contents of a container, to so construct my improved hog feeding device that the discharge of the food from the container will result from the action of the hogs 1n endeavoring to reach the food, and to produce other improvements which Wlll be more clearly pointed out hereafter.

The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawing wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, wherein,

In carrying out my invention, Iemploy a suitable horizontally disposed base menu or 1 which preferably is provided with a ra sed marginal portion 2. From opposing sides or ends of the base 1 rise frame standards 3. 4 represents a food container which in the present instance is shown in the form of a barrel, the upper and lower ends of which are open. This barrel is suspended in an upright position between the frame members 3, being mounted to swing on a rod 5 which passes loosely through oppositely located holes in the container i. The ends of the rod 5 which are mounted in the standards 3 extend through vertically slotted openings 3 in said standards.

As shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the lower end of the barrel is supported at a short distance above the upper surface of the base 1. The tops of the standards 3 are connected by a horizontal frame bar 6, while the end blocks 7 are secured to the outer sides of the upper end portions of the standards 3. block and on these beveled or inclined surfaces are adapted to rest the end portions of horizontal cover sections 8, the upper and inner edges of which'are' hinged as shown at 9 to opposite sides of the bar 6.

In order to more effectively support the suspended container 4, and at same time provide means for adjusting the container vertically, I provide hanger rods 10, one on each side of the barrel or other container, these rods engaging the rod 5 and extending upward through openings in the top bar 6 in connection with which they are held through the medium of nuts 11, these nuts engaging the threaded end portions of said rods. It will be observed that the top strum ture which comprises the hinged members 8, bar 6 and side blocks 7, serves to form a cover or roofing for the open upper end of the container and prevent the entrance of rain and snow to the container.

Upon the center of the base 1, I mount a conical deflecting member 12, the latter having its apex extended into the lower portion of the container and its base portion of such size in circumference as to leave a desirable circular outlet between the surface of the cone and the end of the container, this outlet being indicated at 13 in Fig. 3.

It will readily be understood that when the barrel or other form of container 4 which is suspended above the base 1 in the manner described is filled or partially filled with such material as it is desired to feed to the hogs, a certain portion of this material will find its way outward and downward onto the base member around the base of the cone 12 and in their efforts to reach and secure the material thus fed onto the base, the hogs will naturally push the base of the container, imparting to the latter a swinging action which will result in the material carried by the container being fed downward and outward. It is obvious that in this operation, the cone member 12 will serve to deflect the material toward the outlet.

It will be understood that the construction and operation which I have described will result in the contents of the container being fed onto the base where it can be consumed by the hogs but that the construe tion is such as to desirablyrestrict the feed ing operation and at the same time permit the contents of the container becoming clogged or choked in the outlet.
