Be it known that 1, JOHN UHAnLnsED- MUND, a citizen of the 'United States, and a resident of Shanghai, China, have invented a new and Improved Oil-Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in oil burners, an object of the invention being to provide means for vaporizing the oil, and an improved burner lip or tip which permits a free commingling of the vapor and steam to insure a proper burning action.
A further object is to provide a burner of the character stated, andwhich is capable of receiving burner tips having different arrangements of grooves and recesses so asto permit of an adjustment in accordance w th the fuel oil and steam employed.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

1 represents a metal casing which comprises two castings 2 and 3, having flanges 4 at their longitudinal edges, secured together by bolts 5 and nuts 6. These castings 2 and 3 provide in the upper portion of the casing a relatively long vaporizing chamber 7 and below the same a steam chamber 8. An oil supply pipe 9 communicates with one end of chamber 7 and is connected to the casting by any approved coupling 10, a strainer 11 being secured between the pipe 9 and the end of the casing 1 and projecting into the vaporizing chamber 7 An integral internally screw-threaded nipple 12 is provided on top of the casting 2 adj acent its inlet end, and receives the by-pass pipe 13 which may supply the air to the vaporizing chamber. '1 he top of the casting 3 constitutes the bottom of the vaporizing chamber 7 and is made with a plurality of projections 15, preferably having a staggered arrangement as shown clearly in Figs.
1 and 3, and these projections are heated to a high degreeand cause a thorough vaporizat lon of the oil. The lower casting 3 is made with an internally screw-threaded nipple 16, rece1v1ng a steam pipe 17 for supplying the necessary steam to chamber 8. i

The operation is as follows:
The oil entering through the pipe 9 and strainer 11 is vaporized by reason of the hot metal surface in vaporizing chamber 7 and commingles with the air and is discharged in the form of vapor over the tip 18, commingling with the steam from chamber 8 which passes under the tip 18, and the mixture is burned at the orifice 23.
Various slight changes may be'made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the recise details set forth and consider mysel at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fallwithin the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
