mumm- To all'whom "e't'may concern: v
Be it known that I, EUGENE LoUIs LE-* mane, citizen of the French Republic, residing at 11 Rue La Botie, Paris, in the Re public of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a,
Internal-Combustion Engines, specification.
This invention relates to a motor composed of a plurality of group's of cylinders parallel planes, each group be-- mg composed of an uneven number of cylinders arranged radially.
Internal combustion engines of the above type are already known in which the different cylinders of the engine, so far as the exhaust and hung and, genering through the axis of the motor shaft the usual methods in motors It will be seen that by this means the stars but as a series of groups of alined cylinders, said groups inan uneven number about a crankshaft.-
he engine comprises two, three, four or any other number of groups of.-cy1inders -1noun'ted about a crankshaft of theyusual' I type which would be used in a motor com-.'' prising one bank of cylinders in a number 5 equal to the number of cylinders, of each The different functions: carbureting, fir-j'fl are produced according to ing and exhaust,

. a", monobloc cylindersjarranged radially at an angle of 40 degreeswith respect to each other, about a cranlrsha'ftof the standard typefor four cylinder engines; show the four cylinders or the The valves are arrangedso the exhaust and admissionof the top of the oylinderswhich firstgroup.
as" to permit TO SUWIETE BEE MOIEURS In the example shown, the motor cointhe gases on gives a very A convenient arrangement 'for the exhaust pipeand insures the cooling thereof byallowing to place the pipes outside the bonnet oil-an aeroplane upon'which the engine would be mounted.
U It will be'seen that. each group of fouf cpl inders arranged in a radial plane is'proifl .videdwith its admission'pipesuch' as as g 9 its carbureter its exhaust pipe such such ash and its firingdevice such as i If desired, the ends of the admission or exhaust pipes may be "connected to' 'each other and extend to a single carburetor or a aving now described 7 p I clalm as new and desiretosecure by Letters Patent 1s v 1. An-internal combustion engine compris- Y ing a crankshaft having at least four cranks, motor isno' more consldered as a series of a crank case in which said crankshaft is re tatably supported, an uneven number oflon-' gitudinal rows of cylinders mountedradially t on said crankcase, said cylinders forming starl-ikeg'roups in'each of which the axis of the 'cylinclersare ina plane normal to the ,axisof theicrank shaft, each row comprising ;,-a number'of cylinders corresponding to the number of the cranks; an cylinders, means for operativelyconneetingthe pistons to admission pipes connected to the rows of cylinders, *nected tothe rows admission valves and exhaust valves on said extending longitudi nally between the rows respectively, exhaust pipes conof cylinders, respectively,

-respective cranks, admission pipes leading to the outer ends of the cylinders in each row, respectively, exhaust pipes. leading to the outer ends of the cylinders in each row, valves mounted laterally on said cylinders, cam shafts extending longitudinally between the. rows of cylinders, means'for operatively connecting the cam shafts to the valves, driving connections at one end of the engine for operatively connecting the cam shafts to the crank shaft, igniting means at the same end of the engine for each row of cylinders and means operatively connecting said igniting means to said driving connections.
3'. An internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft; having'at least four cranks, a crank casein which said crankshaft is rotatably supported, an uneven number of longitudinal rows of cylinders mounted radially on said crank case, said cylinders forming star like groups in each of whichthe axis of the cylinders are in a plane normal to the axis of-the crank shaft,
- each row comprising a number of cylinders corresponding to the number of the cranks, pistons working in said cylinders, operatively connecting the pistons to the respective cranks, admission pipes leading to the outerends of the cylinders in each row, respectively, exhaust pipes leading to the outer ends of the cylinders in each row, respectively, valves mounted laterally on said cylinders, cam shafts extending lon: gitudinally between the rows of cylinders, two arm levers pivoted on the lateral wall of the cylinders for operatively connecting the cam shafts to the valves, driving connections at one end of the engine for operatively connecting the cam shafts to thecr'ank shaft, igniting means at the same end of the engine for each row of cylinders and means for operatlvely connecting said igniting means to sald driving connections.
operatively connecting .valves and exhaust means for.
memes 4. An internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft having at least four cranks, a crank case in which said crank shaft is rotatably supported, an uneven number of longitudinal rows of cylinders mounted radially on said crank case, said cylinders forming star like groups in each of which the axis of the cylinders are in a plane normal to the-axis of the crank shaft, each row comprising a number of cylinders corresponding to the number of the cranks, pistons working in said cylinders, means for the pistons to the re-' spective cranks, admission pipes connected to the rows of cylinders, respectively, carbureters connected to said admission pipes, respectively, exhaust pipes connected to the rows of cylinders respectively, admission valves on said cylinders, cam shafts extending longitudinally between the rows of cylinders, means for operatively connecting the cam shafts to the ,valves, driving connections at one end of the engine for operatively connecting the cam shafts to the crank shaft, igniting means at the same end of the engine for each row of cylinders and means for operatively connecting said igniting means to said driving connections.
5. An internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft having at least four cranks, a crank case in which said crankshaft is rotatably supported, an uneven number of lon itudinal rows of cylinders mounted radiafiy on said crank case, said cylinders forming star like groups in each of which the axis of the cylinders are in a plane normal to the axis of the crank shaft, each row comprising a number of cylinders corresponding to the number of the cranks, pistons working in said cylinders, means for operatively connecting the pistons to the respective cranks, admission pipes connected to the rows of cylinders, respectively, exhaust pipes connected to the rows of c linders respectively, admission valves an exhaust valves on said-cylinders, cam shafts extending longitudinally'between the rows of cylinders, means for operatively connecting each of the cam shafts to the admission valves on one adjacent row of cylinders and to the exhaust'valves on the other adjacent row of cylinders, driving connections at one end of the engine for operatively connecting the cam shafts to the crank shaft, igniting means at the same end of the engine for each row of cylinders and means for operatively connecting said igniting means to said drivlng connections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this'specification.
