IMPREGNATOR.
ful Improvements in Inipregnators, of which the following is a specification.
My'invention relates to impregnators in general, and particularly to such impregnators are used for treating the ends of poles, such as telegraph poles, fence posts and the like, with liquid preservatives.
The object of my invention isto provide a device by which a liquid preservative may be forcibly impressed into the interior fibers oi the pole or post being treated, and which will be simple and cheap in construction, and economical in use.
I accomplish the above objects by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings which are a part of this application for Letters Patent, like characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof and in which: p 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device in use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, parts being broken away for illustrative purposes. v
Fi 3 is a perspective view of a convenient form of packing member. I
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the orifice closing plates.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a modified form of my device, upon line 3-3 of Fig. 6. r I
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional elevation of the modified form of my device illustrated in Fig. 5, upon line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section upon line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a detail of the wedge used with the modified form illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
In general myclevice, consists of a vat closed at one end and open at the opposite end to receive the ends of one or more poles or posts to be treated, packing and clamping means to render the vat tight around said poles or posts, and entrance means for the liquid preservative to enter said vat under pressure.
The vat may be of cast material, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, or built up of steel or iron parts, as illustrated 1n F igs. 5 and 6,

and has a pipe 10 entering therein adapted to be connected to a force pump to supply liquid preservative under pressure to said vat 9. l The pole or post 11 to be treated is inserted 1nto the vat 9 through the open top thereof. and suitable packing means used to make a ti ht joint tl'ierebetween.
For treating round poles I preferably use the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, in which is shown a pair of plates 12 wlth substantially semicircular openings cut into one edge oi each plate, as shown in.
FVhen the pole or post has been placed in the vat theseplates 12 are placed in position to embrace the pole or post thcrebetween, as shown in Fig. 2, the plates 12 lying upon an orificed plate 13 disposed upon the flange 1:41 of the vat.
The plate 13 has a centrally disposed circular orifice therein sufficiently large to receive therethrough approximately the size of pole or post being treated, and the sen1i-cir cular openings in the plates '12 are of such size as to substantially lit the ole or post bein treated.
IBy the use of several plates 12 and 13 hav' ing various sized orifices therein a pole or post of any desired size may be treated.
Above said plates 12 and surrounding the pole or post 11 I provide an orificed plate 15 attached to the flange 1 1 by bolts 16.
Between said plates 12 and said plate 15 I place a yieldable packing member 1'7, preferably constructed of woven cotton rope or the like.
In order that this packing member may be tightly wrapped around the pole or post I secure upon one end thereofa thimble 18 having thereon a dowel 19 adapted to enter an orifice 20 in plate 15, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the opposite end of said packing member 17 I secure a strap 21 to which I attach a chain 22 which chain coacts with a sprocket 23 upon a shaft 24 journaled in plates 13 and 15. Upon the upper end of said shaft 24 I secure a ratchet wheel 25 coacting with a pawl 26 upon plate 15, and the end of shaft 24 is squared at 27 to provide a place to attach a wrench or crank for the purpose of rotating the shaft.
When the several parts have been assembled as described and as illustrated in Fig. the packing member 17 is tightened around the pole or post 11 by turning shaft 24, and is secured in the tightened position by the pawl 26 and ratchet Wheel 25. V
Thereupon the packing member 17 is compressed between plates 13 and 15 by tightening bolts 16, thus insuring a perfectly tight joint between the pole or post and the head of the vat.
l/Vhen this has been done, any, desired suitable liquid preservative may be pumped under suflicient pressure into vat 9 and there allowed to remain under said pressure a sufficient time to enter the pores of the pole or post and impregnatethe same to as great an extent as desired.
The modified form of my device illustrates the same as adapted for use with a plurality of square poles or posts 28.
In this case the packing members are plural in number, and consist of thin sheets 29 of suitable material, placed between the several poles or posts and also between the vat and such poles or posts asare adjacent the sides 01 the vat, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. v
The open end of the vat is provided with outwardly inclined sides 30 upon two sides thereof and suitable wedge members 31 are provided to be placed between said out-- wardly inclined sides 30 and the adjacent poles or, posts 28.
The adjacent corners of wedges 30 are mitered and a wedge 32 driven therebetween. Suitable clamping members 33 are provided and are pivotally attached to the sides of the vat 9, as shown in Fig- 5, and screws 34 in said clamping members 33 are disposed to bear upon the adjacent wedge 31 and force the same into place, thus compressing the packing members 29 betweenthe poles or posts and also between the vat and such poles or posts as are adjacent thereto.
My invention may be made of any size and constructed of any materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in ma terializing my invention, I wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that p i said pole; an orificed plate adapted to embrace said pole; a packing member of yieldable material disposed between said notched plates and said orificed plate; means to tighten said packing member around said pole; means to compress said packing member between said plates; and means whereby a liquid preservative under pressure fmay enter said vat.
- 2. A vat openat one end to receive the end of a pole; a packing plate upon the open end of said vat; a packing member be: tween said plates; means to tighten said packing member against said pole; and means to compress said packing member within said plate. s
3. A vat open at one end and adapted to receive therein the end of a pole; a band of packing material adapted to surround said pole adjacent the end of said vat; means to tighten said band upon saidvpole; and means to compress said band in" a direction parallel to said pole.
4t. A vat open at one end to receive a pole; a packing member adapted to surround said pole adjacent the end of said'vat; means to fasten one end of said member relatively to said vat; means to exert force upon the opposite end of said member to tighten the same upon the pole; and means to press said member upon said vat.
In witness whereof I claim'the foregoing as my own I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses at Winchester, county of Douglas, State of Oregon, this 4th day of Sept, 1919.
