To all whom t may concern: e
Be it known that I, ERNWALD H. YOUNGE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Portland, county of Multnomah',` State of Ore on, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Stereopticons, of which the following is a specification.`
My inventlonrelates to stereopticons in general, and particularly to such as are used for dipslaying advertising purposes, and the object of my invention is to provide means to display upon a screen, billboard or building at night a continuous moving series of advertisements. v
I accomplish the above object by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this application for Letters Patent, l1ke characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which: v

In general my` device consists of the regularv stereopticon projecting and condensing lenses and light box, combined with an endless film, a film-,steadying device between the lenses, means to actuate the film, and means whereby any desired length of film ma be used. n e
he arrangement of the projecting lens 6, the condensing lens 7 and light box 8 are the same as usually used in stereopticons, and the film 9 is 4transversely moved across the field of said lenses between the same.
To contain the-filrn I provide a box 10. having forwardly extending` arms 11, one
arm upon either side of the light box 8 and condensing lens 7, as shown in Fig. 1. Within the forward end of each of said arms 11 I mount a roller 12, between which rollers thefilm 9 is stretched across the field of the lenses. From each roller 12 the film extends to the rearward through 'the respective arm 11 into box 10, wherein itis wound around a plurality of rollers 12a similar to rollers 12.. All said rollers are mounted upon pins 13 secured to the bottom of said Specification of Letters Patent.

To provide means for accommodating various lengths of film a plurality of holes 15 are disposed in the bottom of box 10, thus allowing the rolls 12a to be disposed suitably for the desired length of film. as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. j
To actuate said film 9 I provide therefor a roller 16 similar to rollers 12 and 12, but secured to a shaft 17, upon which shaft is mounted a worm gear 18, said worm gear being driven by a motor 19 through a pinion 20,gear 21 and worm 22, as shown in Fig. 1.
To secure sufficient friction between the film 9 and driving roller 16 I provide an arm 23 pivotally mounted within box 10 and having upon the free end thereof a roller 24, and a spring 25 adapted to keep roller 24 in firm contact with the film 9 as it passes over roller 16, as shown in Fig. 1, and in detail in Fig. 4.
To preserve that portion of film 9' upon which the advertising matter appears from damage, all the various rollers are formed with central depressions 26 between enlarged heads 27, with which heads the edge portions of the film contacts, and fianges 28 to keep the film upon the rollers.
To keep the film 9 steady and vibrationless as it passes through the field of the lenses, I provide a steadying device illustrated in detail in Fig. 3. This device consists ofa lower plate 29, and two upper plates 30 supported from plate 29 b v columns or posts 31, a slot 32 being left between the adjacent edgesof plates 30, into which slot the film 9 is inserted.
The adjacent faces of plates 29 and 3() are spaced apart exactly the width of the film 9, and keepers 33 are provided at each end of plates 30 disposed to keep the inserted'film between-the plate 29 and the keepers 33, so that once inserted into Vslot 32 the film cannot escape therefrom in operation.
Thefkeepers 33 are each pivotally mounted upon one of plates 30, preferably upon the top of the respective post 31, and adapted to snap over the top of the adjacent post 31 to secure the respective keeper in place after thel film has been inserted into slot 32. By'this construction the keepers may be ro'- tated or opened to ermit of inserting the film into slot 32. o steady the film 9 as it passes through this device in the field of the lenses I provide downwardly projecting rollers 34 mounted upon plates 30 respectively, and upwardly projecting rollers 35 mounted upon plate 29.
Said rollers 34 and 35 are respectively in such close peripheral juxtaposition as to each contact with the film 9 when it is inserted therebetween, and thus to hold said film steady and vibrationless as it passes along.
Said rollers 34 and 35 extend from their respective plates 30 and 29 only a sufficient distance to contact with a narrow portion of the edge of the film, leaving that portion thereof bearing the advertising matter unobstructed as it passes through the field of, the lenses.
By'means of this construction any desired length of the film may be inserted and operated in my device, and the various advertisements thereon successively projected upon theI screen. the operation being continuous.
My invention may be made of any size, and constructed of any. materials deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this charactelgand while l have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in nu terializing my invention. I wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all inechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim as new and de sire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A stereopticon in combination with an endless film; a box rearwardly disposed to said stereopticon adapted to contain a portion of said film; arms upon said box forwardly extending upon either side of saidl stereopticon and adapted to contain a portion of said film; rollers in the forward ends of said arms adapted to have-a'portion of said film stretched therebetween through the field of said stereopticon; adjustably positioned rollers within said' box adapted to have a portion of said film stretched therebetween; and'means to operate said film.
2. In a stereopticon having means for continuously passing a film through the field thereof; a film steadying device consisting of a lowerplate: a pair of upper plates sup`- ported therefrom, and having their adjacent edges slightly separated; keepers upon said upper plates adapted to open to allow said film to be inserted between said plates, and to be then closed to keep said film thus inA serted; and rollers mounted upon said lower and said upper plates adapted to hold said film vibrationless as it passes therebetween. 3. A stereopticon in combination with a film containing box disposed. rearwardly of said stereopticon; forwardly projecting parallel arms upon said box embracing said stereopticon and having oppositely disposed vertical slots in the inner sides of said arms `ERvwALD H.
