have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machine Folding Cylinders, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to improvements in folding cylinders used in rotary printing machines, and in the mechanism for actuating the pin holders carried thereon.
The object of this invention is to provide a folding cylinder iving easy and safe access to the pin hol ers and the cranks for actuating them during the operation of adjustment or renewal, while at the same time the cylinder is of greater strength than hitherto.
In the case of a folding cylinder as usually constructed, in which the cylinder consists of an outside shell carried by a few spokes or bosses, there is considerable shock and vibration when the gutter bar in the folding cylinder is co-acting with the knife in the cutting cylinder, and in a folding cylinder so constructed the rod carrying the cranks for actuating the pin holders has been situated inside the shell of the cylinder. This arrangement possesses the following disadvantages (1) If the operator wishes to adjust or renew a pin holder he can only do so either through the end of the cylinder or through the slots provided for. the folding blades.
(2) In the above positions he cannot see what he is doing and has to rely mainly on the sense of touch.
(3) There is always the danger of the machine being accidentally started with serious results to the operator.
According to our invention we provide a longitudinal rib connecting the gutter bar to the central tube of the folding cylinder so that the load of impact between the folding and cutting cylinders is distributed along the whole length of the central tube, instead of at several points as hitherto, and we provide in the folding cylinder a trough shaped recess in which are situated the rod and cranks for actuating the pin holders. crank being permanently secured to the actuating rod while the other is detachably fixed in position by means of a set screw, the crank pin being fixed to the detachable crank and slidable in the fixed crank, or vice versa. In order to receive a pin holder it is only necessary to slacken the set screw holding the detachable crank and to slide it alongthe actuating rod, whenthe pin holder can be withdrawn and a new one inserted.

Each pin holder 7 is actuated bya crank pin 8 carried by a double crank consisting of a crank 9 permanently secured to the rod 6 by a set screw 10 and a crank 11 detachably fixed in position by a ,set screw 12. The crank pin 8 is fixed to the detachable crank 11 and is slidable in the permanent crank 9. The crank pin 8 may, if desired, be fixed to the permanent crank 9 and slidable in the detachable crank 11.
In order to remove a pin holder 7 it is only necessary to slacken the set screw 12 holding the detachable crank 11 and to slide it together with its crank pin 8 along the actuating rod 6 when the pin holder 7 can be withdrawn and a new one inserted.
What we claim is 1. In a rotary printing machine, a fold ing cylinder having in it a longitudinal recess, an actuating rod situated Within the recess, a crank mounted on the rod, a crank pin on said crank, and a pin holder adapted to be actuated by said crank and be Withdrawn bodily into the longitudinal recess when disengaged from its crank pin.
2. In a rotary printing machine, an actuating rod, a crank permanently fixed to the rod, a second crank detachably secured to and slidable 0n the rod, and a crank pin carried by one of the cranks.
3. In a rotary printing machine, a folding cylinder having in it a longitudinal recess, an actuating rod, situated Within the recess, a crank permanently fixed to the rod, a second crank detachably secured to and slidable on the rod, and a crank pin carried by one of the cranks.
I. In a rotary printing machine, a folding cylinder having in it a longitudinal recess, a gutter bar, a central tube, a longitudinal rib connecting the gutter bar and central tube, an actuating rod situated Within the recess, a crank mounted on the rod, a crank pin on said crank, and a pin holder adapted to be actuated by said crank.
5. In a rotary printing machine, a folding cylinder, a longitudinal recess therein, a gutter bar, a central hub, a longitudinal rib connecting the gutter bar and central hub, an actuating rod in the recess, a member permanently secured to the rod for operating it, a member detachably secured to and slidable on the rod, and an operating pin carried by one of said members.
6. In a rotary printing machine, a folding cylinder, having in it a longitudinal recess, an actuating rod situated within the recess, a gutter bar, a central tube, a longitudinal rib connecting the gutter bar and central tube, a crank permanently fixed to the rod, a second crank detachably secured to and slidable on the rod, and a crank pin carried by one of the cranks.
7. In a rotary printing machine, an actuating rod, a member for actuating the rod jQQl'lllfinGlltl) fixed thereto, a member detachably secured to and. slidable along the rod. an operating connection carried by one of the members, and a pin holder operated by the connection and removable therefrom when the detachable member has been moved along the rod.
8. In a rotary printing machine, a folding cylinder having a longitudinal recess accessible from the outer side 01": the cylinder, a pin holder extending into the recess, and means in the recess for actuating the holder, said holder being bodily movzble from the side of the cylinder into the longitudinal recess.
