WATER-CLOSET VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1918, Serial No. 225,398. Renewed December 6, 1920. Serial No. 428,765.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns W. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chattanooga, in the county of Hanoi ton. and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVater-Closet Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in water closet valves and more particularly to that type of valve known as anti-freezing.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a valve having; a waste or drain port, which is automatically closed when the valve proper is opened but which, when the valve is closed, will permit water to drain from the valve casin so that the liability of water freezing int e'pipe above the valve head will be eliminated.
A further and important object of my invention is to provide a valve of this character, in which all of the valve parts are connected together and may be removed from the pipe containing the same without digging up the pipe or disconnecting the sections of the same.
A still further object is to provide an automatically adjustable waste valve head for the waste port, so that variations caused by wear in the valve proper and waste valve will be automatically compensated for without leakage of the valves. "With the antifreezing valves now in use, it is necessary that the operator push the valve rod the required distance to open the valve proper and close the Waste valve and if the rod is not pushed. far enough, incoming water will pass to the soil pipe through the waste port. With the present construction, the slightest pressure on the valve rod'will close the Waste valve and the incoming water cannot pass out through the waste port.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, my invention consists of the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved valve showing the same in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the valve opened.
In the drawing 1 represents the valve casing provided at its lower end with screw threads 2 ior connecting the same to a water supply plpe (not shown) and at its upper end with an internally screw threaded portion 3 for connecting the casing to an outlet pipe 4. The casing is provided near its lower end with an enlarged chamber 5 com municating by a passage 6 with another chamber 7 Located in the chamber 7 is a spider or bridge 8 dividing the intermediate portion of the chamber 7 into an opening 9 and a by pass 10. The upper face of the bridge and the wall of the casing adjacent the same are beveled, as shown at 11 to provide a waste valve seat, and a port 12 extends from this seat to a nipple 13, that is connected with the soil pipe of the water closet (not shown).
Located inthe pipe 4 and easing 1 is a valve rod 14 provided at its lower end with a cup washervalve head 15, which cooperates with the wall of the passage 6 for shutting ofi the Water from the closet. Slidably mounted on the rod 14: and located within the chamber 7 is a cup washer valve head 16, which cooperates with the seat 11 for the purpose of. shutting off thewaste or drain when the main valve is opened. A spring 17 has one of its ends secured to the rod 1 1 and its other end fixed to the valve 16, whereby when the rod is depressed, the valve 16 will immediately seat and the rod can then move through the valve head 16 until the spring 17 is entirely compressed, as shown in Fig. 2. The rod 14: is provided at its upper end with a head 18 and located between this head and a shoulder 19 on the casing, is a coil spring which acts to normally hold the valve 15 in closed position and to return it to closed position after it has been opened.
The pipe 14 has a removable cover 21, for a purpose hereinafter described, and an outlet 22 is provided on one side of the pipe for permitting the water to pass to the water closet.
A rod 23 for operating the rod 14 passes through the cover 21 and is connected to the rod 14 by means of a link 24.
In operation, when it is desired to flush the closet, the rod 23 is depressed and this causes the waste valve 16 to seat and opens valve 15, so that water will pass through the casing 1 and pipe 4 to the outlet 22, from which it will be conveyed by a suitable pipe to the closet. lVhen the rod 23 is released, the spring 20 will raise the same and close the valve 15. As the rod rises the spring 17 will elevate the head 16 to uncover the port 12 and permit the Water to drain from the valve casing.
If it is desired to remove the valve parts from the casing for the purpose of adjustment or repair, the same may be easily and expeditiously accomplished by simply unscrewing the cap 21 and lifting the rod 28. As all of the valve parts are connected to the rod 23, they Will be raised and removed with said rod;
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have'devised an improved form of Water closet valve, and I wish it understood that changes and variations may be made in the structure Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A Water closet valve comprising an open ended casing having means at its lower end for attachment to a Water supply pipe and provided at its other end with a detachable cap, an enlarged chamber provided near therlower end of the casing, another enlarged chamber located Within the casing above the first chamber, a bridge extending across the second chamber and dividing the same into a drain valve passage and a by-pass a passage, of substantially the same Width as the drain valve passage, placing the chambers in communication and forming a main valve seat, a ren'iovable rod extending longitudinally of the interior of the casing, manually operated means for depressing said rod, a main valve carried by the lower end of said rod, cooperating, with the main valve seat and occupying the first chamber when in open position, the wall of the casing being provided with a. drain aperture which communicates with the drain valve passage, a drain valve mounted on the rod and closing the drain aperture when the main valve is in open position, resilient means for normally holding the main valve closed, and a water outlet located in the upper portion of the casing for permitting Water to pass to the water closet, said main valve being of a size to permit the same to pass through the drain valve passage in removing the rod from the casing.
2. A valve of the kind defined in claim 1 in which the manually ope 'ated means for depressing the rod consists of a stem which passes through the cap and has its lower end flexibly connected to the upper end of the rod.
3. A valve of the kind defined in claim l in which the drain valve is slidably mounted on the rod, and a coil spring surrounds the rod and has one of its ends fixed to the rod and its other end fixed to the drain valve.
