Description

L. D. CRAPPS.
PUMP VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE I9. 1920.

A TTORNE) PATENT OFFICE.
LEON D. CRAPPS, 01E LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO.
IUMP-VALVE.
Application filed June 19, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Leon D. Cmrrs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Las Oruces and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pump-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to pump valves, for use on suction water pumps.
The object is to provide a simple, efiicient and durable valve which will do away with the need for priming the pump every time same is used.
ther advantages will appear in the course of this specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is vertical section of a pump cylinder equipped with my improved valves. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 In carrying out this invention, I provide an open, cupped washer 1, preferably made of leather or some similar material. This washer 1 is formed with an upstanding, circular wall 2, and an inwardly and horizontally directed bottom flange 3. This flange 3 is gripped on its upper side by a metal valve cup 4:, formed with the upper circular wall 5, the medial, horizontal valve seat 6, and the lower circular wall 7. The outer face of the wall 7 is threaded to engage the inner, threaded face of the annular lock ring 8 as shown. The lock ring 8 impinges the under side of the flange 3 of the washer 1, as the ring is screwed up, thus locking the washer l firmly in place. The ring 8 has an inwardly turned bottom shoulder 9, adapted to engage the bottom, apertured guide plate 10 and support same.
The upper, inner face of the valve cup t is offset to afford a shoulderlQ adapted to support the upper, apertured guide plate 13, while said inner face is itself threaded to engage the threaded plunger head 11, as shown, the plunger head 11 being connected to the pump rod 14:. The metal suction valve 15 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Serial No. 390,164.
is ground to seat directly upon its metal seat 6 without the use of any intermediate washers of any kind, and the valve stem 16 is mounted through said valve and slidingly engages the guide plates 10 and 13 as shown. A lower metal compression valve 17 is similarly mounted upon its seat 18, and controlled by its stem 19 slidingly engaging the apertured guide plates 20 and 21. These valves are mounted within the pump cylinder 22.
\Vhile I have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
lVhat I claim to be new and patentable is In combination with a pump cylinder an upper piston therefor, comprising an open and cupped leather washer, having an upstanding wall and a lower, inwardly turned flange; a metal valve cup formed with an upper circular wall, a medial valve seat and a lower circular wall, the valve seat being adapted for positioning upon the inwardly turned flange of the cupped leather washer; a lower lock ring adapted to engage outwardly the lower part of the valve cup, and to impinge the lower side of the said cupped washer, for locking the washer in place, said lock ring having an inwardly turned bottom shoulder; a lower guide plate mounted upon said inwardly turned shoulder of the lock ring; an upper, apertured guide plate mounted above the valve seat; a plunger head adapted to engage inwardly upper part of said valve cup; a suction valve directly seated upon said valve seat; and a valve stem mounted through said suction valve and slidingly engaging said guide plates at either end.
