To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN B. CLIFTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Heels and Attachments Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to boots and shoes and has for an object to provide a heel which can be readily attached and when worn out can be easily removed. and a new heel sub stituted therefor.

Among other features the invention comprehends a suitable plate attached to the sole of the shoe at the heel and which is adapted to receive the heel proper, the latter being slid into engagement with the plate, with. suitable means for locking the heel to the plate so that the applied heel will appear to form a part of the shoe precisely the same as the heels that are ordinarily nailed di rectly to a shoe.

In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,-

Referring more particularly to the views, the numeral 10 indicates a shoe having a heel portion 11 on the sole 12 thereof. Attached to the heel portion 11 is a plate 13 which has the longitudinal edges thereof formed to provide guides of a dove tail construction. The plate is provided with a cross slot 15 in which operates a projection 16 of a locking element 17, the stem 18 of the latter being suitably swiveled in the forward end of the plate and formed with a cross groove 19 like the head of a screw for the application of a key 20 thereto. The heel proper is indicated by the numeral 21 and is formed with a cut-out portion 22 of sub: stantially the size of the plate 13 with a dove tail groove 23 recessed in the heel for the guides 14 of the plate. The cut-out portion of the heel has a depression 24 therein adj acent the front edge of which is arranged a preferably metallic cross piece 25.

In the application of the heel to the plate on the shoe, it is necessary that the locking element 17 have its projection 16 disposed within the slot 15, this being accomplished by applying the key 20 to the cross groove 19 of the stem to swing the projection 16 into the slot. The heel is now slid on to the plate and when the heel reaches its innermost position on the plate, the slot 15 will register with the depression or recess 24 so that when the key 20 is applied to the stem 18 and the projection 16 of the locking element 17 swung at right angles to extend vertically downward from the plate, said projection 16 will be received in the depression 24 and by reason' of its contact with the cross piece 25, the heel will be securely locked upon the plate or shoe and cannot be removed until the key 20 is again applied to the locking element to swing the projection 16 thereof,

into the slot 15 and out of the plane of the heel proper.

It will of course be understood that I may employ rubber, leather or other forms of composition heels in connection with the structure disclosed and it will of course be also understood that various slight changes may be made from the construction set forth herein without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claim.

Having described my invention, 1 claim- A shoe heel comprising a plate provided with a cross slot and attached to the sole of the shoe at the heel thereof, an L-shaped locking element mounted to swing crosswise of the plate and having one end mounted in the plate the other end projecting into the slot and adapted by the movement of the element to be swung into a position to project outwardly from the slot, guides formed by the longitudinal edges of the plate, a heel having a cut-out portion forming grooves for the guides of the plate to facilitate the sliding of the heel onto the plate and a cross piece secured in the heel in a cross depression therein the latter registering with a depression in the plate when the heel is engaged therewith to receive the projecting end of the locking element for the latter to abut against the cross piece when the heel is applied to the plate, the swinging of said I locking element out of said depression and engagement with the cross piece and into the slot of the plate unlocking the heel relative 10 to the plate for the removal of the former from the latter.
