Specification of Letters Patent.
Eatented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed February 14, 1920. Serial No. 358,645.
1 '0 aZZ whomt may cancel e it known that I, Ponrnn H. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexander, in the county of Upshur and State of West Virginia, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved fase tener for various articles of wearing apparel, such as garments, shoes, gloves and the like and an object is to provide a very simple, efficient and practical device of this kind capable cf being produced for a rela tively low cost and sold for a reasonable remuneration.
Another object is to provide a fastener so constructed that it is possible to stamp the female member of the fastener from a single piece of sheet metal, in combination with a male member adapted to enter the female member and held therein so as to fasten opposite portions of an article of wearing apparel together.
A further object is to provide a fastener including a female member of elongated. form having a slot with outturned flanges under which the male member engages, there being means on one of the out-turned flanges to partly overlie and retain the male member in engagement with the female member.
A still further object is to provide afastener, wherein the female member, when stamped from a single piece of sheet metal is also formed with means for securing the female member to the article of wearing apparel.
An additional object consists in the provision of a female member, which may be formed or stamped by one operation of a die, or by one operation of a drop forge method, the securing means of the female member to the garment being constructed at the same time on the body of the female member. I
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed. l
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in thecdrawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a View of the improved fastener constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the male and female members connected,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l and also showing the two members connected, i
Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view of the female member; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the male member.
lleferring to these drawings, 1 designates a plate of the female member, and which is designed to be stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, or made in one piece by a drop forge method, and at the time of forming said female member, the same is constructed and shaped, as hereinafter set forth.
The plate 1 of the female member is constructed with an elongated slot 2. In constructing the slot during the one operation, it is formed with an elongated relatively narrow portion 3 and an enlarged and wider portion 4 at one end. The side edge walls of the relatively narrow elongated portion 3 of the slot are upset and outwardly deflected, thereby providing offset flanges 5, which curve outwardly and toward each other.
These flanges merge into an end wall 6 at the end of the slot opposite the enlarged or wider portion 4. By constructing the flanges 5 in the manner disclosed and shown, a male member receiving space 7 is provided and projecting from the edge of one of the flanges 5 is a yieldable prong 8, whi'h is bent or given a turn as at 9, and is positioned centrally of and adapted to extend longitudinally with relation to the narrow portion 3 of the slot. The end of this pron" is beveled as at 10. By po itioning the prong centrally of the relatively narrow portion 3 of the slot. in order to space the prong from the opposite edges of the flanges 5, passages 11 and 12 are provided. and the crotch 13 of the passage 12 is adapted to receive and retain the shank of t e male member in position. The plate which con stitutes the body of the-female member is provided with a plurality of spurs or sharp pointed projections 14. These projections are formed on the plate during the one stamptively narrow portion of theslot so ing or drop forge operation and to secure the female member. to a garment these spurs or sharp pointed, projections are forced through the material of the garment and are clenched on the inner surface of the garment, thereby securely fastening the female member in position.
The male member comprises a head 16,
. by the garment by means of a loose flexible joint 19. The link 15 isin turn connected to the projection21 of the head 16'by means of a loose or flexible joint 20. The projection 21., the link 15 and the projection carried by the garment all constitute a loose or flexible sectional shank to permit the overlapping parts of. the garment to move. relatively to each other, when the malemember is .fas
toned to the female'member, by engaging the head 16 of the male'member under certain of the outstanding flanges and the yieldable prong 8 of the relatively narrow portion of the lot. V
In fastening the opposite sides of the garment or apparel, the male member is first insertedin the enlar ed portion of the slot 3 of the female merribenthen the male member is moved in a direction toward the relathat the projection 21 of the male member will ongage the passage 11 of the relatively narrow portion oft-he slot. As the projection 21 is being adjusted through the passage 11, the
head '16 of the male. member moves under one of the outstanding flanges of the relatively narrow portion of the slot and under the prong. After moving the projection 21 until itreaehes the beveled end 10 of the prong, the projection 21 is'moved to follow thecurvature of the end of the relatively narrow portion of the slot and then engaged and moved through the passage 12 of the relatively narrow'portion of the slot until the projection 21 of the head of the male member reaches a position adj aeeiit the crotch 18 or the lower end of the passage 12. When the projection 21 is in this position it will be noted that the head 16 is in engage ment with the under part of the prong 8 and the other outstanding flange of the relatively'narrow portion of the slot. It will be noted that the male member will be held in this position and furthermore as the 013100 site sides of the garn'ient move relatively longitudinally wan-renames each other, the: shank 21 may-correspondingly .move. in
the passage 12, but not far enough to cause the shank 21 to return over the beveled end of the tongue and back into engagement with the passage 11. In other words, the projection 21 will merely move a very short distance up and down correspondingly to the movement of the oppositesides of the garment. By means of the resilient tongue 8 lateral movement of the projection 21 1s carrying the two members may be forced in directions away from each other until the projection 21 of the male member is free of the beveled end of the prong, then theopposite sides of the garment may be moved longitudinally in the opposite directions causing the shank to move through the passage 11 until the head is free of engagement with the flanges of the relatively narrow portion of the slot, in which case the head of V the male member may be removed through the enlarged end of the slot. I
The resilient prong 8 of the female meme oer is slightly bowed as shown clearly in Fig. 8 of the drawings to retain the headlG of the malemember in the passage 12 of the female member. 111 fact, the bowed portion of the prong prevents upward movement of the head of the male member excessively.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed'as new. and useful is:
1. In a fastener, the combination with a female member comprising a body plate provided with an elongated slot, of a male member comprising a shank and a head, said slot for the greater portion of its length being relatively narrower than the diameter of the head of the male member, the opposite portions of the relatively narrower portions of the slot being upset outwardly, one end' of the slot being enlarged to permit the head of the male member to engage under the upset opposite portions of the relatively narrow portion of the slot, one edge of the relatively narrow portion of the slot having a resilient prong extending centrally and longitudinallyof the relatively narrow portion of the slot, thereby causing to'be formed a U-shaped passage, said U-shaped passage having adjacent open and closed ends through which the shank of; the male member isaclaptecl to pass'until theshanlr engages the closed end, thereby retaining the shank in engagement with the passage and the head in engagement with the under faces of the outwardly upset. portionsof theslot.
2. As a new article of manufacture comprising a female fastener member consisting of a plate having a relatively narrow elongated slot provided with an enlarged opening at one end, one edge of said relatively narrow slot having a prong extending longitudinally of and spaced within the slot in a direction toward the smaller end of the slot to be engaged by the shank of a male member to hold it in engagement with the slot.
3. In a fastener of the kind set forth, the combination with a female member comprising a plate having an elongated slot, said slot comprising a relatively narrow elongated portion and a relatively larger end portion, the longitudinal side edges of the relatively narrow portion of the slot being upset outwardly, curved and extended to ward each other, the lower end of one of said outwardly upset portions of the relatively narrow portion of the slot having an elongated prong extending longitudinally of the relatively narrow portion of the slot and spaced from the opposite edges of said relatively narrow portion of the slot, thereby providing a pair of parallel passages, said prong having an upright and unattached terminal spaced from the upper end of the relatively narrow portion of the slot, of a male member comprising a head adapted to pass through the relatively larger portion of the slot and engaging under one of the outwardly upset portions of the relatively narrow portion of the slot, said head having a projection adapted to pass through one of the passages and then moved past the unattached terminal end and then through the other passage until it engages the crotch of said other passage, thereby connecting the male and female members.
a. In a fastener of the kind set forth, the combination with a female member comprising a plate having an elongated slot, said slot comprising a relatively narrow elongated portion and a relatively larger end portion, the side portions of the relatively narrow portion of the slot being outwardly upset forming flanges curved and extended toward each other, the lower end of one of the flanges having an elongated prong extending longitudinally of the relatively narrow portion of the slot and spaced from the edges of said flanges, thereby causing to be formed a U-shaped passage, said passage the latter adapted to move through the U- shaped passage with the head first riding under one flange and the prong, and then under the other flange and said prong until the projection engages the crotch, thereby uniting the male and female members, means 7 for fastening the female member to one portion of the garment, and flexible means for fastening the male member to another por tion of the garment.
As an article of manufacture, a garment fastener, comprising a female member consisting of a plate having its central longitudinal portion provided with a relatively narrow U-shaped passage, said plate at one end having an enlarged opening with which one end of said passage connects, the other end of the passage terminating in a crotch, the crotch end of said passage having a prong extending therefrom extending longitudinally of the plate, to retain the projection of a male member in engagement with the crotch, and a male member to engage under the plate and having a projection adapted to pass through the U-shaped passage and engage the crotch. I
6. As an article of manufacture, a garment fastener, comprising a female member consisting of a plate having its central longitudinal portion provided with a relatively narrow U-shaped passage, said plate at one end having an enlarged opening with which one end of said passage connects, the other end of the passage terminating in a crotch, the crotch end of said passage having a prong extending therefrom extending longitudinally of the plate, to retain the projection of a male member in engagement with the crotch, and a male member to engage under the plate and having a projection adapted to pass through the U-shaped passage and engage the crotch, said prong having a bulged end curved portion to prevent excessive movement of the projection of the male member in a portion of the U-shaped passage.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
