Description

VP. GIFFARD.
Compressed Air Defense Sticks.
No. 136,316. Patented Feb. 2 5,lB73.
Paul I araZ UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
PAUL GIFFARD, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
lMPROVEMENT IN COMPRESSED-AIR DEFENSE-STICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,316, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, PAUL GIFFARD, of Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented a new and Improved Air Defense-Stick; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a longipart A being a cylinder or air-reservoir, and
the lower part S the barrel. WVithin the airchamber A is the pump-cylinder 13, within which the piston G is operated by the rod D through the head E, the said piston forcing air through the valve F into the space between the cylinder A and pump-cylinder B until the requisite pressure is attained. A suitablepa-cking, E, is introduced at the head to prevent the escape of air. Between the barrel and air-chamber a small opening, a, is made, closed by a valve, I, opening from the air-chamber. A spindle, m, is attached to the valve, and works freely longitudinally in a perforated guide, G. The lower or barrel portion separates from the upper portion immediately below the guide G. Below the valve a bolt, L, is arranged, sliding transversely and bearing upon the valve so as to hold it firmly in its seat, and in connection therewith is a lever, L, which may be turned up to the position denoted in broken lines, and when in that po sition a slight additional movement will draw the bolt L and allow the air to escape and pass instantly to the barrel, there operating upon the ball or charge in similar manner as in ainguns.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described defense-stick, consist ing of the a-ir-ohamber A, with the air-pump B arranged therein to charge the said chamber, the barrel S with the opening a between valve I, and combined with the bolt L and lever L ,the whole constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
