To all to hom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS LnNz, a citizen of the United'States of America, residing at Lidgerwood, in the county of Richland and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Bed-Making and Bedclothes-Airing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as beds and more particularly has reference to a combined bed making and bed clothes airing device.

It is the primary aim and object of the present invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed to facilitate the making of beds and which may also be utilized for suspending the bed clothes from an elevated position above the bed so that the clothes may be readily aired preparatory to being placed on the bed.

It is an equally important object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein an improved supporting and attaching member is employed for assuring of the maintenance of the bed clothes in an extended position when the device is arranged in an elevated position and for also facilitating the holding of the bed clothes on the bedstead.

More particularly the present invention includes a provision of manually operable means for cooperating with the attaching and supporting member to assure of the raising and lowering of the bed clothes to a point near the foot of the bed.

Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of carts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring, now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a bed stead l to the upper cross bar of the foot rail of which is connected a pulley 2 by means of a flexible strap 3 held against displacement by a buckle 4:. Trained about the pulley wheel is an endlesselevating cable 5 which is also trained about another pulley wheel 6 the latter being fastened in a convenient manner at a point above the head rail being designed to be anchored in the wall.

Rigidly connected to the lower lay of the cable 5 is a block 7 in the upper bifurcated portion of which is mounted a pulley wheel 8 which operates on the upper lay of the cable 5. A hook 9 depends from the block 7 and is detachably engageable with the screw eye 10 which in turn carries the clothes supporting and attaching member indicated in its entirety by the numeral 11. This clothes supporting and attaching member in the present instance consists of a strip 12 in which is mounted at uniformly spaced intervals a series of hooks 13 designed to removably engage the eyelets 14: carried in the lower ends of the bed clothing which may consist of sheet 15 comfort 16 and spread 17.

In use assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and as indicated in the drawings it is only necessary to exert a pull on the upper lay of the cable 5 in a manner that. will elevate the lower lay so as to assure of the raising of the bed clothes from the foot of the bedstead so that all of the bed clothes will be carried upwardly toward the upper pulley 6 and will consequently suspend the bed clothes from such elevated position so as to be extended. Of course it is apparent that since the strip 5 is as wide as the bed clothes the latter will be readily extended and will be maintained in an even position when elevated. .The parts may be left in the elevated position during the day so that the bed clothes may be thoroughly aired. It is desired that the upper pulley 6 be at such a position that when the bed clothes are extended the lower edges thereof which are designed to be arranged near the head of the bed when the latter is made up will engage the mattress or upper sheet. Subsequently the cable 5 may be adjusted so that the strip 12 will be positioned near the foot of the bed. The strip may now be disengaged from the cable or left on the lower portion of the bed clothes and placed beneath the mattress when the bed is being made up as is apparent.

In Fig. 5 there is shown a slightly modified form of the invention which consists of an upright bar 18 designed to be held rigid with the head of the bed by means of clamps 19 and 20 while a pulley wheel 21 similar to the pulley wheel 5 is mounted in the upper end of the rod. By this arrangement it is apparent that the entire device will be carried with the bed and it is not necessary to arrange the bed in any certain position near the wall ofthe room.

It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention Will be readily apparent.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed to be secured by Letters Patent is In a device for the purpose indicated, the combination with a bedstead, of a pulley supported a substantial distance above the head-board oi the bedstead, a second pulley attached to the foot-board of the same, an endless cable trained over the two pulleys, whereby the cable assumes an inclined position, a block secured to the lower lay of the cable and carrying a pulley traversing the upper lay of the cable, and a transverse element detachably secured to the block and provided with means for engagement with the edges of bed-clothes adjacent the foot of the bed, the movement of the cable over its pulleys effecting the traversing of the block toward but upwardly from the headboard so that the bed-clothes are raised from the bed in the manner and for the purpose specified.
