Y '0 all whom t 17mg/ concern Be it known that I, PETER Ninwnxnowsni, a citizen of the tUnited States, residing at Omaha, county of Douglas, and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, oii' which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rail joints and it is the principal obj ect to provide a rail joint which produces a rigid connection between the ends of tivo adjoining' rails while leaving enough play between these ends for compensation oi the changes to which the rails are submitted under the changing temperatures.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail joint which will reduce the so-called pounding of the car wheels when running over a rail joint to a minimum and thus greatly adding to the comfort of the passengers and result in a great saving ot material.
A still further object of the invention, is the provision of a rail joint allowing the construction of a track presenting an almost uninterrupted appearance.
Furthermore, the rail joint of the present invention will positively prevent a displacement o two adjoining rails in longitudinal direction and thus relieve greatly the stress on the fastening means.
Another object is to provide a rail which will allow a ready exchange of worn out rails. The above mentioned objects are attained in the construction illustrated and fully described herein, which is simple, cheap and durable, as well as economical in use.

In practically carrying out my invention the track is composed of two rails 10 and 10 resting upon the customary ties 11. The ends of two adjoining rails 10 being interlocked as for instance shown at 12.
Specification of Letters Patent.

In order to allow the interlocking ol the ends oi' two rails, each or' these rails is formed at one end with a vertical longitudinal substantially V-shaped slot or groove extending from the head oi' the rail through the web thereof and its foot iiange. The inner apex oi' the V being enlarged to form a substantially circular opening 1d.
The opposite end oi' each rail is reduced and presents a substantially V-shape part or wedge 15 ending in an outer substantially circular head 16, said head and wedge part adapted to snugly fit into the opening 14 and V shaped groove 13 of the adjoining rail end respectively when both ends are united by pushing, pressing or hammering the wedge shaped end of one rail from above into the groove at the end oi' the next adjoining rail.
In order to allow the passage oi' rail securing bolts 17 through the wedge part 15 of one rail and the walls of the V-shaped groove in the end of the next adjoining rail said wedge part as well as the walls of the grooves are provided with alining square holes 18.
T he securing bolts 17 are provided with heads 18 adapted to engage the web of a rail and Shanks 19 and 19 separated by a V- shaped central slot 2O extending through nearly the entire length of the bolt. On the opposite side of the web, the shanks 19 are each provided with a flange 21 and 21 gripping over the rail web on the side ot' the rail oppositely disposed to the head 1S.
In order to securely fasten the bolt in the holes 18 a wedge 22 is provided which may be driven into the V-shaped slot 20 between the elastic Shanks of the bolts for spreading the same apart into intimate contact with the side walls of the square holes 18.
In Fig. 5 a modified form of my invention is illustrated according to which the ends of two adjoining rails 10 are dovetailed as indicated at 11 one end adapted to iit into a suitably dove-tailed groove oi the adjoining rail end, while bolt 17 of a .similar construction as the bolt 1'? serves to firmly unite the parts of the joint.
The construction and operation of the rail joint will be apparent from the foregoing' description. It will however be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the present construction and arrangement shown or described, it being clear that many changes may be made without departing from the spirit oi? the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows For connecting the perforated ends of two adjoiningrails of a rail joint of the character described, a bolt, a head on one end of said boit adapted to engage a rail web on one side, two straight elastic shanks Separated by a centraLV-shaped groove passed through the perforations of the rail ends,
Vflanges at the outer ends of said Shanks 15 bringing the same into Contact with the 20 walls of the rail perforations permitting of a convenient readjustment, substantiallyas described and for the purpose set forth.
