Be it known that I, EDWARD J. OLEARY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dies for use in forging machines; and has for its object the provision of a set of dies which in one opera tion will produce a relatively large lateral-#1 t 1 th f th T d f b d en ire eng 0 e cie an 0 a com me projection or lug upon an iron or steel bar, by an upsetting as hitherto. 3
With this end in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the dies as Will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the invention is illustrated as applicable to the production of lugs from a bar which is designed to be used in the manufacture of mast band.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a view g shown partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section of an embodiment of my invention, the male die being shown retracted and a metal bar in position to be operated upon. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the male die advanced to produce the lug shown in the cavity of the female die. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View with the male die in its advanced position and one of the members ofthe female die withdrawn from the work. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a sample of the work produced by the dies illustrated in the preceding views.

Cooperating with the aforesaid die is a male die having a body portion 17 provided with a shank 18. adapted to engage 111:3. socket provided in the plunger 10.
Said body is provided with a longitudinal slot 19- extending the entire width of the body and forwardly. from within a short distance of the shank 18. The upper bifurcation 20, hereinafter designed as the forming element, is of less length than the lower bifurcation 21 which will be hereinafter designated as the carrier. serves to support the work and bears upon the floor 13 of the grooves of the die members 11 and 11 when the latter are brought into juxtaposition with each other. WVhat I claim, is
1. A forging machine having a reciprocating plunger and a stop, a male die secured tosaid plunger for movement relative to said step, said die being provided with means which cooperate with said stop to retain therebetween stock which is to be operated upon, a female die through which both. the aforesaid die and the stock extend, said male and female dies'being' provided with cooperating parts for effecting the upsetting of a partof the stock within the female die.
