C. A. RITTER. SKATE SHARPENING STAND. APPLlcATxoN FILEDJUNE28.1920.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
jizz/61722757" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. RITTER, 0F CI-IICGO, ILLINOL'S, ASSIGNOR TO NESTOR JOHNSON MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF
EIICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SKATE-SETAPUPENING STAND.
Application filed June 28, 1920.
To aZZ zo/02nz't may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Rrrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Skate-Sharpening Stands, of' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device tor holding a pair of ice skates while being sharpened, and consists in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of a skate holder constructed in accordance with my invention and shown clamped to a table or bench edge and holding a pair of skates in position Jfor sharpening;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view ot the parts shown in Fig. 2.
The device of my invention comprises two plates 1 and 2, arranged one above the other and each being made ot sheet metal to be light in weight and inexpensive and easy to manufacture. The lower plate 1 is rectangular and fiat and has side flanges 3, 3 curved upward and inward toward each other to conform to the curvature of the runner housing tubes 4, 4f of the skates te be held in the holder and to tit about said tubes on the outside thereof, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The top plate 2 is also rectangular and tits between the side flanges 3, 3. rThe plate 2 has side flanges 5, 5 extending upward and curved outward to conform to the curvature of the tubes 4, l and to nt against the same opposite the lianges 3, 3 to clamp the tubes between them with the runners G, 6 carried by said tubes projecting above the lianges, as shown. The llanges on said plates may be formed b v bending the side portions ot the plate to Jform them, as shown, and being parallel hold the skates in that position and also relatively close together. To clamp the tubes t between said {ianges 3, 5, a screw bolt 7 is secured to the under plate 1 and extends upward therefrom through a hole in the top plate 2 and there receives a clamp nut 8, which may be ot the winged or butteriiy type to permit it to be more readily grasped and turned. The screw bolt 7 is arranged within the center ot the plates 1,
Specification of Letters Patent.

2, as shown in Fig. 3, and the upper plate 2 is curved transversely upward from its side iianges to give it resiliency and permit it to be flattened out in clamping the skates in the holder, when the nut is tightened for that purpose. Thus only one screw bolt and only two plates are required, therefore making the device have but a few parts and those simple to manufacture and apply.
To support the holder above an underlymg support, such as a table or bench 9 (Fig. 1), a distance suilicient to holdl a pair ot skates with shoes attached above the table, I employ a bracket, which as shown in the drawings has an upright supporting post 10, made hollow to receive at its upper end a stem 11 secured to the under side of the plate 1, at the center. This stem 11 is adjustably held in the post by a set screw 12 to vary the height of the holder above the table to clear the shoes oil the table, when the occasion demands. At the bottom orF the postare two jaws 13, 13, rigid therewith to receive between them the edge ot the table 9 and be clamped thereto by a clamp screw 14 threaded through the lower jaw.
In use, the device `described and shown is applied to the edge of a table or bench 9 and the top plate 2 removed. The pair of skates to be sharpened are placed inverted on the bottom plate 1 with the plate between the front and rear cups of the skates, as shown in Fig. 1, to balance them in the holder. The top plate 2 s then applied and clamped in place between the skates and the latter are held with their runners 6 projecting upward with their running edges in the same horizontal plane and close enough together to have an oil or other sharpening stone 15 (dotted lines,4 Fig. 1) extend between and rest on such edges for sharpening the same in the movement of the stone thereover. The bottom plate 1 being flat, the runners G, 6 project above the plate the same distance and thus bothy runners may be sharpened evenly and to the same extent by one stone at the same time.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for holding a pair ot ice skates while being sharpened, comprising a top plate and a bottom plate having parts to receive between them and hold a pair of skates relatively close together with their runners extending above said plates and substantially parallel, and fastening means to Jforce one of said plates toward the other for clamping the skates between said parts.
2. A device for holding a pair of ice skates while being sharpened, comprising a curved top plate and a flat bottom plate having side flanges to receive between them and hold a pair of skates relatively close together` with their runners extending above said plates and substantially parallel, a single screwthreaded bolt secured to one plate at the center and extendingA through a hole in the center of the other plate, and a nut applied on the threaded end of said bolt to force one plate toward the other for clamping` the skates therebetween.
3. A device for holding a pair of tubular ice skates while being sharpened, comprising a Curved top plate and a flat bottom plate having the side portions thereorl bent to provide flanges extending toward each other and curved to engage and lit about the runner housing tubes of said skates, and Jfastening means to force one of said plates toward the other for clamping the skates between said flanges.
4. A device for holding a pair of tubular iceV skatesV while being sharpened, comprising a curved top plate and a flat bottom plate having the side portions thereof bent to provide flanges extending toward each other and curved to engage and lit about the runner housing tubes of said skates, a screwthreaded bolt secured to the bottom plate at the center and extending through a hole in the center of the top plate, a clamp nut applied against said top plate on the threaded end of said belt, and a bracket secured to the under side of said bottom plate and adapted to engagean underlying support for sup`vporting said plates above the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I affix my signature, this th day of June7 A. D. 1920.
