From this hood extends a steam pipe opening into the steam space ol' the evaporator into the air nozzle t). laterally connecting with the open air as indicated at ln operation the evaporator is maintained` with an approximately constant water level, as indicated. and the water is heated by the steam coil lx', the bulk ot the steam coming ottA near the outer periphery ot the evaporator below and passing' upward into the space S on the outside of the baille wall B.
vthence it passes down below the edge ot the batlle 'all and upward through the annular passage S into the space S above the steam cooling cylinder A, and thence it passes down through the tubes ot the condenser, the water escaping into the chamber l". The annular baille B obviously will prevent water heilig carried into the space S2 by the .energetically issuing steam, and will also serve to prevent water trom being splashed into the space S2 by movements ol the ship, and this danger ot water being spl shed into the space S2 is also further counteracted by the batiie l.
Sutlicient steam will be collected under the hood M to result in a steam jet ot' some energy issuing through the. nozzle the etllect ot which as the steam passes into the air nozzle O is to draw air Vtrom the atmosphere through the connection and mix a conside able quantity ot air with the steam, and a considerable, portion olf this air will remain in admixture and solution in the condensed water.

An evaporator and condenser having a body member made up ot' a single casting comprising an evaporator body having a central'portion oi its bottom pierced to torni a tube sheet, a cylindrical upwardly extending member surrounding said tube sheet portion and lying within the evaporator body, and a cylindrical downwardly extending member also.surrounding said tube sheet portion and forming the body ot' the condenser.
An evaporator and condenser having an evaporator chamber toi-med with a cylindrical upwardly extending member extending into theI steam space ot the e vapoirator, and a cylindrical down 'ardly extending member o'tI greater diameter than the upwardly extending member dividing the steam space of the condenser into inner and outer chambers.

In an evaporator and condenser, a steam collecting hood located in and extending below the water level of a portion of the evaporator, said hood being formed with an upwardly extending steam delivery nozzle, in combination with an air nozzle surrounding the steam nozzle and in communication with the atmosphere.
