Description

WITNESSES H. C. BROWN.
VALVE AND GRINDING MECHANISM THEREFOR.

VALVE AND GRINDING MECHANISM THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Application filed November 18, 1919. Serial No. 338,973.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HUGH C. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Valve and Grinding Mechanism Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.,
This invention relates to improvements in valves and grinding mechanism therefor, an object of the invention being to so construct a puppet valve as to permit the positive longitudinal movement of the valve as well as the rotary movement of the valve during the grinding operation.
Puppet valves, as heretofore made, have been ordinarily provided either with a screwdriver receiving groove in their faces or with Spanner wrench receiving recesses, and as it is necessary in grinding said valves to permit a longitudinal movement of the valve away from the seat during the turning operation, it has been necessary to insert a spring around the valve stem. It is the purpose of my invention to so construct the valve that the valve grinding tool will couple therewith and cause the valve to move longitudinally with the tool as well as receive its turning movement therefrom.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangementsof parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. V
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view mainly in elevation, but partly in section illustrating one form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section at right angles to Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 represents a puppet valve which is provided in its face with a groove 2, the latter having a curved base wall 3 and inclined or tapering side walls 4, 4, so that .the groove is dovetailed in cross-section and curved or tapered longitudinally, deepest at its center and inclining toward both ends.
5 represents a valve operating tool having a tongue 6 at its free end which is shaped like the groove 2. In other words, this tongue is curved at its edge longitudinally and is dove-tailed in shape in cross-section. The tongue can be inserted in the groove by moving the tongue transversely of the valve and longitudinally of the groove and by reason of the dove-tailed shape of the coupled parts, the tool can be utilized to impart a positive longitudinal movement in both directions as well as a rotary or oscillating movement to grind the valve.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and, hence, I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth butconsider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
The combination with a valve, of a valve grinding tool, said valve having a groove therein, said groove being deepest at its center and having its base wall curved longitudinally, and said groove having its side walls inclining toward each other from their inner to their outer ends, said valve grinding tool having an integral tongue shaped in conformity with and adapted to lit in said groove.
