DAVENPORT-BED.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FELIX VVAJTUKIE-WIGZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and into a comfortable bed.

rrnother object ofthe invention is the provision of an article of furniture of this character, in which theback and seat are of separate formation and are connected together by levers of novel formation which,

" when the davenport is open, will cause the back to turn and assume a position substantially fiush with and parallel to the seat, so as to provide separate and distinct mattresses arranged side by side.

Another object is the provision of a combined davcnport and bed in which the bed clothes may be folded out of sight when used as a davenport without the necessity of their removal, thus leaving them in convenient position for use when the invention is converted into a. bed.

Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention includes a frame which is formed of end members 10, which are connected together by lower spaced connecting bars llcand atop connecting bar 12. The lower connecting bars 11 are connected by transverse end bars 13, the space between these bars being closed, as at 14, to provide a base or bottom for the seat of the davenport, as will be apparent, and to provide a compartment 15 for the reception of pillows, or extra blankets or bed clothes.

The seat of the davenport, which is indicated at 16, is formed of a frame 17, the latter supporting spaced transverse bars 18,

'to provide supports or springs, 19, upon which rests the seat 16. This seat is suitably upholstered and is adapted to form both a seat used as a davenport and a mattress used as a bed.

The back, which is indicated at 20, is constructed similarly to the seat and includes a frame 21 and spaced transverse bars 22, which support springs 23, upon which the upholstery of the back rests.

The seat 16 has its frame '17 hingedly or pivotally secured to the rear of the frame formed by the connecting bars 11 and the transverse end bars 13, as indicated at 24. This seat thus forms a cover for the compartment 15, which may be held in raised position,when desired, by means of levers 25. One end of each of these levers ispivotally connected near thefront edge of the frame 17, their opposite ends being curved and notched, as indicated at 26. These notches are adapted to engage pins 27 positioned transversely of a slot or groove 28 provided in each of the transverse end bars 13. This provides convenient means for ob.- taining access to the interior of the compartment 15, when desired. To hold the seat down against the front connecting bar 11, there is irovided a bolt 29, which 1s shdably The is detachably connected to the end members 10, by detachably securing the frame or base formed by the bars 11 and 13 to the said end members. For this purpose there is secured at each end of both the transverse end bars 13 and the end members 10. an apertured L shaped bracket 31, the brackets secured to the end members 10 being disposed at right to the other lliZlCkCtS. These brackets are positioned 5-. detachable engagement with studs 32, which are carried by brackets 33 also secured to the end members and to this frame. Pivotally secured to each of the end members 10, is a latch 3d, which is adapted to engage the upper edge of the front connecting bar 11, so as to prevent upward movement of. this bar and consequently disengagement of the studs from the apertured bracket 31,.

permit proper movement ofthe back when changing from a davenport to a bed. To facilitate this movement, there is provided a tab 1-5, secured to the upper edge of the back.

Secured along the front edge of the seat, as indicated at 4C6, is one edge of a strip of fabric 47, the opposite edge of this strip being secured to the lower edge of the back. When folded for use as a davenport, the strip of fabric 47 provides a cover for the seat, so that the bed clothes may be folded upon the seat and hidden from view when the bed is not in use. Any suitable means may be provided for securing the edge of the strip li'to the back, but it is preferred to secure along the rear lower edge of the back. a rod 48, which is held in suitable brackets 4-9. The adjacent edge of the strip of fabric l? is provided with tabs 50, whichmay be tied around the rod 48 in the form of loops and provide for removably securing this edge of the strip 4L7 in position.

Secured in brackets 51. positioned along the rear edge of the seat 16 is a rod 52, which is designed for the purpose of providing means for securing one edge of a sheet 53, or other article of bed wear. This latter is provided with a hem along its edge for the reception of a rod 54L, around which are secured tabs 55, which may be formed into loops around the rod 52. lVhen in use as a clavenport, this sheet may be folded centrally upon the seat and will be covered by the strip of fabric 47, which also covers a spread or other bed clothes.

The rear of the frame may be provided with. a curtain 56, which is supported upon a rod 57 mounted in brackets 58, depending from the top connecting bar 12.

It is believed that when the foregoing description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent. The right is reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope'of the appended claims.

Having described the invention what is claimed is:

l. A combined davenport and bed, comprising a frame including end members, an upholstered seat, a base for supporting the seat, an upholstered back, means for pivotally securing the back to the frame, whereby the latter will be caused to assume a position parallel to the former when the bed is open and means including apertured L- shaped brackets and offset engaging lugs carried by the end members and base to se cure the latter in position.

2. The combination with a combined davenport and bed, of a longitudinally dis nosed rod secured along the lower edge of the back and the rear edge of the seat to provide bed clothes securing means.
