Description

P. R. BARUFKE. I CORN AND CALLUS CUTTER AND TRIMMER. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 10, 1917.
1 ,359,315, Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Paul ZKBaru fke,
ATTORNEY- PAUL R. BARUFKE, OF WEST HOIBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
CORN AND CALLUS CUTTER AND TRIMMER.
Application filed October 10, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL R. BARUFKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVest Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn and Callus Cutters and Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for cutting corns and callus places and the principal object of the invention is to provide an instrument of the character described so constructed that one jaw or plate can be set upon the foot with the corn or callus place protruding through an opening formed in the plate and the second jaw or plate then moved across the first plate to bring the cutting edge of the second jaw into operative engagement with the corn and thus out the corn or callus place away.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this instrument that the cutting edge of the second plate will move across the opening of the first plate in the proper manner' for efficient cutting.
Another object of the invention is to provide an instrument of the character described which will be simple in construction and efiicient in operation and to further so construct it that it may be easily sharpened.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view looking at one side of the instrument, 7
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 looking at the opposite side of the instrument, the
instrument in this view being closed instead of open as shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a lower blade and 11' designates an upper blade, both of which are heart-shaped and in the present instance are of substantially the same size. The jaws are pivot-ed together in overlapping relation by a bolt 12 or the like, adjacent their inner ends, and each b-ladeis provided with a handle 13 extending longitudinally of the axis of the blade whereby the upper blade may be swung across the lower blade. A substantially elliptical opening 14 is provided in the lower Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Serial No. 195,819.
blade adjacent the forward or pointed end thereof and extends transversely of the longitudlnal axis of the blade. A second openng 15 is provided in the lower blade and 18 arranged adjacent the inner end thereof. The inner edge 16 of this opening forms an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the blade 10 and accordingly the opening 15 is adapted for cutting callus placeswhile the opening 14 is particularly adapted for cutting corns. The outer edges 17 of both openings are beveled or slightly rounded lnwardly to abut with or catch on the part to be out. ting edges 18 of the heart-shaped plates are provided with cutting edges, the blade 10 having a rounded cutting edge, and it will e manifest that these two cutting edges may intersect and be effectively used in severing cuticle's.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that when the blade 10 is placed upon a foot so that the opening 14 encircles a corn and the edge 17 abuts therewith and the handles 13 move together, the cutting edge 18 of the blade 11 will move forwardly and outwardly of the opening 14 toward the far end thereof. Also this cutting edge will move forwardly and outwardly toward the edge 17 of the opening 15 and in both instances, successive portions of the cutting edge will successively engage and establish a shear ing action through the corn or callus patch and will not gouge through the part to be severed.
What is claimed is V 1. A surgical instrument including a pair of pivotally connected blades having their coacting cutting edges convexed to present a maximum angle therebetween at any relative position of the blades.
2. A surgical instrument including a blade having a plurality of irregularly shaped openings of diiferent configurations, and a second blade movable relative to the first and having a cutting edge adapted to intersect the edges of the openings.
3. A surgical instrument comprising a pair of blades pivotally connected together at points adjacent the rear ends thereof and .having convex edges, the convex edge of one blade being provided with a cutting edge, the co-acting blade being provided with a pair of openings, oneof which is The relative inner convex cut-.
arranged transversely of the longitudinal In testimony whereof I aifix my signature axis of the blade adjacent the forward end in presence of two Witnesses.
thereof, and the other opening defining an PAUL R. BARUFKE. acute angle with the longitudinal axis of Witnesses: 5 the blade and arranged adjacent the lean GEORGE F. ZENN,
end of said blade. 7 v v V WVILLIAM S. FOWLER.
