Description

Enrrn STATES PATENT Qrrroe,
THGMAS O. HARGRAVE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS,
EMPRGVEMENT 5N STEELVARD SCALES,
E ecilieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,908, dated February 18, 1:73.
are all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. HARGRAVE, of the city of Boston and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Scales or Steelyards; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device with a portion of one link cut away, and a portion of the removable beam cut away. Figs. 2 and 3 are details to be referred to.
My invention has for its object to provide a pair of scales or steelyards which may be used as a hook on a tackle for hoisting and lowering, and be made to act as a scale for weighing, whenever desired; and it consists of two links interlocking each other, the lower link having shanks which have in their ends bearings for a lever, said lever in turn being pivoted in the upper link, so that when the weight is attached to the lower link it will rest against the bottom of the upper link, and prevent any weight being thrown on the pivots until the counterpoise is placed upon the beam of the lever.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I shall proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is a link, made with an irregularity or bulge upon it, as seen at a. At a is pivoted a lever, b, of the form substantially as shown, and this lever'has a hook, c, for engaging with a part, t, of the beam K, the shoulder 0 of the beam resting against the end 0 of the lever c. A link, B, engages in the link A, and has rising from it, within the sides of the link A, two shanks, c and 0. These shanks c and 0 are slotted near the top at n, and a bearing pin or pivot, 2', which passes through the lever 12, has its ends resting in the slots, the lever playing between the two Is er eyes are provided at the ends of the links for the purpose of suspensien and attachment of articles to be moved.
It is very evident that the beam K can be made in one entire piece with the lever I), having a spring-snap to secure it to the rope, and also that a variety of mechanical means can be adopted to make it removable, such as a spring-clasp, or bolt and spring.
The operation is as follows: When a pack age is being hoisted, the counterpoise is either taken entirely oft the beam or run close to the link A, or both beam and counterpoise are removed, and the link B falls till it rests against the bottom of link A, and no strain comes up on the pivots 11 and a. As soon as the package is ready for weighing, the counterpoise X is run out on the beam K, and immediately the lever commences to raise the package, the fulcrum being at a. The link B is raised clear from the link A, and the weight is thrown on the pivots n. and a and the device acts at this moment only as a steelyard.
'While the device is being used only as a hook, the slots 1' 1' allow such free play for the pivot 12 as to necessitate scarcely any wear of the bearing-points.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The link A, in combination with the link 13, with its slotted shanks e and c, and the le ver 0 with its pivots r and a, and hook c, all constructed and operating as described.
2. The scale-beam K, composed of two parts, connected as shown at i c, capable of being disconnected, the part containing the knife blades remaining in position for weighing, while the graduated bar is removed, as herein described.
