Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented N 9 13990 Application filed May 25, 1920. Serial No. 384,013.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, LENNAH BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairview in the county of ltichland State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Reinforced Wooden Bowl; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and e 'act description of. the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to wooden bowls of the type used in culinary art, and has for its object to provide a bowl of this character, which bowl is reinforced around its marginal edge in such a manner that the bowl will be prevented from warping and splitting. It has been found where bowls of this character are not provided with some form of metallic reinforcing that the bowl soon warps incident to constant washing of the bowl in varying temperatures of water and then drying that the bowl soon warps and cracks, therefore it is the primary object of the invention to so reinforce the bowl as to prevent warping and consequent splitting or the same. 7 r
it further object is to provide a reinforcing metallic annular member extending around the marginal edge of the bowl and having its inner flange embedded in the inner surface of the bowl and its outer flange provided with a flange which underlies the bowl flange.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings 1-- Figure l is a perspective view ofthe bowl.
Fig; 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figul.
8 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line of Fig. l. p
Referring to the drawings, the numeral designates a wooden bowl of a conventional form and of the type commonly used in culinary art. Bowls of this type are generally turned. out from wood and consequently under constant use the bowls are caused to crack incident to washing and drying the same. To overcome this difficulty a metallic reinforcing band 2 is provided.
The-band 2 is provided with an inner flange 3 which engages the inner wall of the bowl, said inner flange being provided with an outwardly extending annular flange 4 which engages an annular channel 5 in the inner wall of the bowl. Extending outwardly from the flange 3 is a horizontally disposed flange 6, the outer edge of which merges into an outwardly and downwardly extending portion 7, which overlies and engages the annular surface 8 of the bowl edge. Portion 7 merges into a downwardly and inwardly extending portion 9 which engages the outer face 16 of the flange 11, said portion 9 at its lower end being provided with an inwardly and upwardly extending flange 12 which engages the lower edge 13 of the flange 11. t will be seen that the metallic reinforcing member 2 engages the upper marginal edges and the inner and outer walls of the bowl, thereby thoroughly reinforcing the bowl so that it cannot swell when the bowl is wet and consequently cannot cracker split when the bowl dries out. By providing the inturned flange 12 and the outwardly extending flange a, it will be seen that the metallic reinforcing band is maintained on the edge of the bowl without the use of other securing means. It will also be seen that by providing the multiplicity of angle portions that the metallic reinforcing band will not easily bend or give incident to warping or swelling.
- Secured to the portion 9 of the metallic band 2 are handle members 14, the arms 15 of which are riveted as at 16 in the portion 9, thus it will be seen that handles may be provided for the bowl and secured thereto without the necessity of securing the same directly to the wood.
From the above it will be seen that a reinforcing member is provided with a wooden bowl of the type used in the culinary art, which reinforcing member will prevent warping and cracking of the bowl incident to washing and drying the same. Also that a wooden bowl which is sanitary is provided, that is, in bowls now in use when the same cracks material being worked in the bowl gets in the cracks, where it is impossible to clean, this material decomposes and consequently renders the bowl unsanitary. By providing the metallic reinforcing band the above difliculty is overcome.
.T he invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is A culinary bowl comprising a Wooden body portion and a metallic reinforcing band therefor, said band comprising an annular channel adapted to engage and receive the marginal edge of the bowl, one flange of said channel engaging the inner face of the bowl and the other flange of the channel engaging the outer face of the bowl, annular flanges carried by the channel flanges, one of said annular flanges being embedded in the Wall of the bowl and the other annular flange engaging a shoulder carried by the Wall of the bowl, said annular flanges forming means for securely holding the'inetallic channel on the edge of the bowl.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name'to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
