Description
J. SIMON. TOOTHBRUSH. APPLICATION men JULY 8, 191a.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
5441x241 tot Wu 1N Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SIMON, 0F MASON, TEXAS.
TOOTHLBRUSH.
Application filed July 8,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SIMON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Mason, in the county of Wason, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes and particularly to fountain tooth brushes.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and efficient device of this character wherein there is provided a rotary brush for contact with the teeth of the user, and novel and simple means for causing a rotation of the bristle portion of the brush while the same is being passed back and forth over the surfaces of the teeth.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character for feeding the water to the bristles while the brush is in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a tooth brush made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a hollow stem, one end of which is formed with a series of openings 11. The other end is formed with a surrounding lip 12 and is rotatably d1sposed through an externally grooved collar 12 which is engaged in the open mouth 1n the rubber bulb 13, Telescoped on the stem 10, and secured thereto by means of the pin 21, is a second hollow stem 10. On the outer end of the stem 10 there is arranged a casing 10 which is formed with openings 14 registering with the openings of the stem 10, while the other end abuts against the adjacent end of the stem 10. The casing 10 is secured to the stem 10 by means of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
1918. Serial No. 243,770.
the pin 2:2, shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Secured to the outer face of the apertured end of the stem 10 are the bristle tufts 15 for engagement with the teeth of the user, as will be readily understood. On the end of the stem 10, adjacent thebulb, is .rotatably supported a cylindrical caslng 16 through which the stem 10 extends, and encircling the stem 10, within the casing, is a coil spring 17, one end being secured to the stem 10 and the other end being secured to the casing 16. In the stem, adjacent the lip 12, there are formed the circumterentially arranged series of notches 18, and pivotally supported by the casing 16 is a detent 19, one end of which extends through an opening 20 in the casing where it is provided with a button.
In the operation of the device, the stem 10 is held in the hand and the bulb compressed and the bristle end of the device submerged in water. Upon releasing the bulb the same will suck water into the stem 10 and into the bulb. Then the stems are rotated with one hand while the other hand holds the casing 16 to wind up the spring, which is held from accidentally unwinding by the detent. The bristles are then placed against the teeth of the user and the button of the detent pressed inwardly, while at the same time the hand which holds the bulb holds the casing 16, with the result that the spring will unwind and turn the stems so that the bristles will rub against the teeth and cleanse the same. This operation is repeated until the teeth are properly cleansed. After the spring has unwound, the operation is repeated to wind the spring, the same being again released by pressing inwardly on the button of the detent.
There is provided a novel and simple device by. means of which the teeth can be cleaned with the transverse motion as well as the vertical motion, which is ordinarily adopted with the brushes now in use, these motions being produced by the rotation of the bristle portion of the device.
JV hat is claimed is:
A tooth brush including a pair of telescoped stems secured together and having openings at one end, the inner one of the stems extending beyond the end of the outer one at one end, bristles carried by the apertured end of the outer stem, a rubber bulb carried by the extended end of the inner stem, a casing receiving the said extended end of the stem and rotatably mounted thereon, said extended end having a circumferential series of notches, a coil spring around the stem within the casing andsecured to said stem and casing, and a finger operated pivoted detent carried by and exdetent engaging With said notches.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
