CURTAIN FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED 050.31.1919.

A TTORNE rs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CONNECTICUT.
OF W'ATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CURTAIN-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application filed December 31, 1919. Serial No. 348,563.
To all whom it may concern:
c it known that 1, WILLIAM Rannumv, a citizen of the United States, residing at i Vaterbury, New Haven county, State of C0nnecticut,'have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Curtain-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in curtain fastener members of the type comprising a base, revoluble button, headed shank and spring, the latter surrounding the shank within the base and holding the button thereto, and has for its object to provide in such a member a spring which shall permit a considerable range of movement and yet make a smooth rubbing con tact on the shank head on all sides of the shank. It further has for its object to produce such a fastener member in which the spring acts to steady the head end of the shank by making a broad and firm engag ment with the head of the shank and the inner end of the recess in the base.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a fastener embodying my invention partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 shows a transverse section of the button of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a plan view;
Fig. 4: shows a plan view of the base with the button removed; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the spring.
Referring more particularly to the crawings, 1 is a base member drawn up from sheet metal so as to have a recess formed therein. 2 is a button mounted to turn upon the base from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in dotted F lines in Fig. 2. 3 is a shank whose upper end provided with circular threads and whose lower end is provided with a head a. 5 is a spring having an enlarged central washer-like portion 5 in which is formed a perforation 6 and having two upright arms 5 which engage the innermost surface of the recess within the base. In assembling these parts the shank 3 is threaded through the spring and inserted into the recess in the button 2, which button is then compressed laterally smooth rubbing rounding said so as to form a permanent engagement be: tween the button and shank due to the gripping of the button upon the circular screwthreads.
The base is provided with longitudinal and transverse grooves, which, in conjunction-with the action of the spring 5, hold the button in longitudinal or transverse position after it has been moved to one of those positions. The washer-like portion 5 of the spring makes a broad engagement, within the recess of the base, with the head 4 of the shank 3 on all sides of the shank and also provides a surface which has a contact with said head. The upper ends of the arms 5 or". the spring are squared and considerably wider than the diameter of the shank and make a broad and steady engagement with the inner end of the recess in the base. These upwardly extending arms of the spring also permit oi a considerable spring movement. The spring on account of the described engagement with the inner end of the recess and the shank head steadies the lower end of the shank so as to improve the action of the fastener.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a curtain fastener having a recessed base and a button mounted thereon and provided with a headed shank, the improvement which consists in a flat metal spring having an enlarged perforated portion sur shank and engaging the head thereof within said base, and two upwardly extending curved arms engaging the inner end of the recess in said base.
2. in a curtain fastener having a recessed base and a button mounted thereon and pro vided with a headed shank, the improvement which consists in a Hat metal spring having an enlarged perforated portion completely surrounding said shank and engaging the head thereof within said base, and two upwardly extending and inwardly curved arms engaging the inner end of the recess in said base, the ends of said arms being squared, so as to steady the shank within the base.
