To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, A. W. DALHAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in a safety device for holding papers, purses and the like, the principal object of the invention being to provide a pair of gripping jaws for holding the article, with additional means for gripping the article if the same should be pulled upon in an attempt to remove it from between the jaws.

Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the device may be secured to an article of clothing by sewing or by a safety pin.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.

Fig. l is a view of the blank from which one of the members is formed and showing the tongue secured thereto.

In these views, 1 indicates one of the jaw members and 2 indicates the other jaw member. Each member is formed of a plate, stamped in the form shown in Fig. 4, and provided with a pair of ears 3 which are bent over and perforated to receive the hinge pin 4:, so that the two members are hingedly connected together. The front ends of the two plates are corrugated to provide teeth and these teeth are bent at right angles so that they will co-act with each other. A spring 5 is placed on the pin at, with its ends pressing against the plates to keep the teeth in engagement. So far the device is similar to gripping devices now on the market, but in order to prevent an article held between the jaws from being pulled therefrom I provide a tongue 6, of substantially V-shape, which is hinged to the member 2 by the pin 7, the tongue having its wide end rolled to form a bearing for the pin and the ends of the pin passing through slots 8 in the member 2 and soldered to the said member. The wide end of the tongue is nearest the teeth of the jaws so that the point extends toward the hinge of the members and said tongue is made of spring material and is slightly curved so as to engage and press upon the article being gripped between the jaw members. Thus if a person should attempt to withdraw the article from between the aw members, without opening said members, the tongue would pierce the article and thus prevent its withdrawal. The

only way the article can be removed from between the jaw members is to open the said members so as to remove the pressure of the tongue from 01% the article and thus permit it to be removed from between the' jaw memers.

1 form ears 9 on the sides of the member 2 and perforate these cars so that the device may be fastened to the clothing by sewing or the like, or said ears may be turned at right angles to receive a safety pin and the device secured in place by this pin.

. The part of the plate 2 between the slots 8 may be pressed outwardly to provide space for the rolled end of the tongue.

It will thus be seen that l have provided a simple and effective device which will act to prevent articles from being detached from the holder without separating the jaw members.

It is thought from the foregoing descriptiorr that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention 1. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of gripping jaws pivotally connected together and a tongue on one member extending toward the pivotal point for preventing the withdrawal of the article held by the jaws while the jaws are in closed position.

2. A device of the class described, com prising a pair of gripping jaws each made from a plate of metal provided with ears having perforations therein, a hinge pin 5' engaging said perforations, a spring on said pin ion holding the gripping parts of the jaws together, a pointed tongue hinged'to one plate and pressing against the other plate and extending toward the pivotal point and ears formed on one plate for re- 10 oeiving the fastening means.
