Be it known that I, RAYMOND DUNCAN,

a citizenof the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented a certaln new and useful Improvement nch leans for Controlling the Operation of Talking- Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relatesto means for. controlling the operation of talking machines,

and particularly to means for automatically controlling and especially automatically sto ping the rotation of therecord support. no of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and effective mechanism of the class specified.

Another object oftheinvention is to obtain simplicity of construction and reliability and efficiency in operation.

Another object of the inventionistopermit the use of the device with either hill and dale or a laterally undulating zigzag record, and to make unnecessary changes or ad ustments, or vary any mountings or connections in the devicein order to permit the use of the device with such difl'erent records. v

Another object of .the invention is to secure the foregoing and other desirable results in a simple and expeditious manner. In operation the stylus 8 and pointer 12 will travel in the record groove, the member 12 being somewhat in adva-nceo't the stylus 8,considering;the direction-cf said members 8 and '12, Vlqren said parts 8 and 12 approach the end of the record groove,-

the member 12 will arrive at the end first and upon reaching the end of the groovewill remain stationary, travelinginthe cir cular roove withwhichthe reeordis provided, while'the stylusS continues to'approach the end of the groove. In this way the member 11 will be moved towardthe contact 39 and will come in contact with the end 21 thereof and thus closethe electrical circuit including the electro magnetic brakecontrolling mechanism, and will cause said brake to act upon the turntable =11. and automatically stop the operation of the machine;

When another record is played the members 8 and 12 wlll beagain put in posltion, and

will be separated from one-another-by the incline 3%, and both will ride on the record until nearly the; end of the same when the companion member 12 will be stopped and the stylus S will catch up ith it and thereby again close the circuit and set the brake.

It will be seen that the styluscompanron 11 will maintain-the proper POSltlOH rela tive to the stylus 8 whether the sound lion modifications may be'made-without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The combination of a talking machine companion member being provided with an elevated mounting permitting it to assume a proper relationship to the reproducer of said bracket member being provided with a lateral projection having a recess in which said companion member is arranged to move and by which the movement of said member is limited.

7 The combination of a talking machine tone arm, a reproducer carried thereby and mounted for swivel adjustment, a companion member arranged to ride on the record and cooperating with the reproducer, said companion member being provided with an elevated mounting permitting it to assume a proper relationship to the reproducer when the latter is adjusted to either one of its positions, said elevated mounting comprising a bracketmember attached to the tone arm in the rear of its swivel connection, .said bracket member being provided with a contact with which said companion member is arranged to cooperate, and means for adj ust ing'said contact relatively to said bracket member, said companion member being pivoted to said bracket member.

The combination of a talking machine tone arm, a reproducer carried thereby and mounted for swivel adjustment, a companion member arranged to ride on the record and cooperating with the reproducer, said companion member being provided with an elevated mounting permitting it to assume a proper relationship to the reproducer when the latter is adjusted to either one of its positions, said elevated mounting comprising a bracket member attached to the tone arm in the rear of its swivel connection, said bracket member being provided with a contact with which said companionmember is arranged to cooperate, and means for adjusting said contact relatively to said bracket member, said companion member being pivoted to said bracket member, and said companion member comprising two parts adjustable longitudinally with reference to one another. 4

The combination of a talking machine tone arm, a reproducer carried thereby and mounted for swivel adjustment, a companion member arranged to ride on the record and cooperating with the reproducer, said companion member being provided with an elevated mounting permitting it to assume a proper relationship to the reproducer when the latter is adjusted to either one of its positions, said elevated mounting comprising a bracket member attached to the tone arm in the rear of its swivel connection, said bracket member being provided with a contact with which said companion member i arranged to cooperate, and means for adjusting said contact relatively to said bracket member, said companion member being pivoted to said bracket member, and said companion member comprising two parts adjustable longitudinally with refer-' once to one another, said two parts being a threaded member and a socket member adapted to receivethe threaded portion of said threaded member.

The combination of a tone arm 1 carrying a reproducer 2 having a stylus 8, aswivel connection consisting of members 3 and 4 between the tone arm 1 and reproducer 2, a bracket member 14' secured to the under side of the tone arm 1 in the rear of the swivel connection thereof, said bracket member 14 having a downwardly extendin projection or portion 16, the lower end 1 of which consists of a recessed lateralextension, a spring contact 19 having its upper end secured to the portion 16 and its lower end provided with a lateral projection 21, an adjusting screw 22 carried by the member 16 and controlling the position of the contact 19, a companion member 11 having a point 12 adapted to travel in the record groove, said member 11 consisting of two parts 27 and 28, whereof the part 27 is piv oted to the bracket 14 and insulated therefrom, and whereof the part 28 is provided with a threaded socket adapted to receive the threaded end 26 of the member 27, said member 11 being arranged to work in the slot or recess formed in the transverse end portion 17 of the member 16. j
