State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Rule and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tool holding appliances, and especially to that type which is adapted for holding minor tools about the person of the wearer of the appliance.

The object of this invention is the provision of means for holding a rule and pencil, which means may readily be attached to the clothing of the wearer, for-allowing easy access to the instruments held by the holding means.

A further object of this invention is the provision of means for safely holding said rule and pencil, preventing loss of time in reaching them, and preventing loss thereof.

To attain these and other objects, I employ the device shown in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, showing how a rule and pencil may be inserted therein.

Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of my device.

In the practical embodiment of my invention, a folding carpenters rule as 1, may be inserted between bands 2 and the back or main body member 3, to which said bands 2 are suitably attached, a box portion 4: having a bottom 5, front 7, and sides 8 thereon, being provided for holding the bottom of said rule therein.

For preventing the rule from falling out of box t, on sudden motion of said holder, and for resisting the withdrawal of said rule, portions 6 of box 4:, are formed from the front 7 by means of open cuts 9 of suitable shape, said portions 6 being bent inwardly to act as springs for pressing against the face of rule 1, whereby said rule is held against undirected movement.

Rings 10, of sufficient size to allow a carpenters pencil as 14 inserted therethrough,

are attached to bands 2, and help to hold said pencil, a strip 11, which may be a continuation of bottom 5 of box 4, is provided and terminates in upstanding portion 12, from which spring 13 is formed by cuts similar to cuts 9, said spring 13 being bent inwardly similarly to springs 6. Spring hook 15 is suitably secured to back 3, as by rivets 16, and is adapted to be hooked over the belt or over a pocket of the wearer, for holding the entire device to his person.

It will be seen that my improved device may be attached to any convenient part of the wearers person, so that the tools contained therein may always be safe and easily accessible, and that the worker can proceed with his work without loss of time due to misplacement of his pencil or rule, or loss thereof, said instruments being readily withdrawn from and replaced into the holder as often as desired without inconvenience.

What I claim is:

1. In a rule and pencil holder, means for holding a rule, and means for removably holding a pencil comprising a right angle bend attached to said rule holding means, a spring formed from the upstanding portion of said bend for resisting move ment of said pencil, and rings attached to said rule holding means through which said pencil may be inserted.

2. In a rule and pencil holder, means for removably holding a rule comprising a back, a boxsecured to the lower end of said back, into which the end of said rule may be inserted, and springs formed from the front of said box for resisting movement of said rule, and means for removably holding a pencil comprising a substantially right angle bend continued from the bottom of said box, and springs formed from the upstanding portion of said bend for re sisting movement of said pencil.

3. In a rule and pencil holder, means for removably holding a rule comprising a back, a box secured to the lower end of said back. into which the end of said rule may be inserted, guide bands secured to said back above said box, and springs formed from said box for resisting movement of said rule, means for removably holding a pencil comprising a substantially right angle bend attached to said box, springs 5 formed from the upstanding portion of said bend for resisting movement of said pencil, and rings attached to said bands through which said pencil may be inserted, and a spring hook secured to said back for attaching said holder to the clothing of a wearer. 10 Signed at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, this 2nd day of February, A.
