Specification oi Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 26, 1920 Application filed January25 '1919. Serial No. 273,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, ROBERT FoREsMAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound-Reproducing Records, of which the following is a specification, such as willenable those-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sound-reproducing'records and particularly to such' devices as are used in connection with talking machines, phonographs, graphophones and the like; and the invention consists of animproved mounting or holder for records of this class, preferablymade in the form ofa book, the construction of whichjis similar to that of a box to and within whichoneor more sound records are applied or secured; a further object of'the invention being to secure to orplace the sound records on the inner face of the separate members of the book-shaped holder, and provide the outer face of the separate box rnembers-withstories which correspondwith the subjectupon the record; a still further'object being to provide the outer face ofone part of the box with a story which corresponds with the subject of the record secured to the inner face of the other part of the box member;
and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or devices of the class and for thepurpose specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are des-' ignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a bookcase or cabinet showing a number of my 1mproved book-shaped box members mounted therein Fig. 2 a perspective view of one of the book-shaped box members detached;
Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2
and on an enlarged scale; I
Fig. 4 an inside view of one part ofthe book-shaped box member shown in Figs. 2 audit; 1 Fig. 5 an inside view of the-otherpart of the book-shaped box member shownin Figs. 2 and 3; and,
Fig. G an outside view of that part of the book-shaped box member shown in Fig. 4. One of the objects of my invention is to provide a record holder or'container of the class specified which can be packed or ar ranged in a cabinet in the manner of books or in the form of a libraryand in Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have indicated at 10 the side walls ofa bookcase, or the side Walls of the cabinet of a 'soundreproducing machine of any kind or class, and at 11 I have indicated two Shelves of a bookcase or cabinet on one of which is shown supported nine volumes of my improved book-shaped box members 12, which constitute a part of what I call a talking library.
The book-shaped box members 12, one of which is shown in detail in Figs. 2 to 6 inclusive, consists of separate parts 13 and 14. The part 13 comprises a rectangular portion 15 provided at one side with a beaded edge portion box member, and atqits other three sides with raisedfianges 17 set inwardly of said edge portion as clearly shown in Figs.
-3 and def the drawing. The part 14 of the book-shaped box member comprises a'recta-ngular portion 18, one side edge of which is provided with a raised flange 19 and the other three side edges of which are provided with raised flanges 20 set inwardly from said side edges and the dimensions of the part 14 of the box member, between the flange 19 and the opposite flange 20 thereof is less than the dimensions of the part 13 of the box member between the beaded portion 16 and the opposite side flange 17 thereof, so that the flanges 19 and 20 of the part 1 1- of the box member will fit. within the bead,
16,-01' the inner wall 21 thereof, and the fla'ngesl'l' of the part of the box member as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 ofthe drawing.
The'above described construction forms the book-shaped box member 12 which in all respects is of general book form, the covers of which are made up of the rectangular portions 15 and 18 of the parts13 and 14, while the bound end of the book is formed by the beaded portion 16 and, in
practice, I provide the rectangular portions 15 and 18' of the parts 13 and 14 of the box {member 12 with central apertures 22 and 23, and secured to the inner faces of said rectangular portions are sound reproducing records 24 and 25 respectively. the apertu'res26 of which are n o-.'. mmon alinement with the apertures 22 and '23.
b words,
The Mocking Bird Figs. 1 and 2 with the words In the accompanying drawing, the subect of the record 24 is indicated as being as is illustrated at 27 on the top face of the record, as shown in Fig. 4, while the record 25, or the subject thereof,'pertains to Mother Goose as is indicated by its title on the face of the record as shown at 28 in- Fig. 5 of the drawing.
I also preferably secure to, or apply to, the outer faces of the rectangular portions 15 and 18 of the separate parts of the box member 12 in any desired manner printed as well as illustrated subject-matter pertaining to the subjects upon the records 24 and 25, and in Fig. 2 of the drawing I have indicated at 29 on the outer face of the rectangular portion 18 of the part 14 of the box member, a story of the Mocking Bird which is also illustrated, while in Fig. 6 I have indicated at 30 the story of Mother Goose which is placed in, or applied to, the outer face of the rectangular portion 15 of the part 13 of the box member in any desired manner. From the foregoing it will be noted that the subject upon the record 24 on the part 13 of the box member is printed or otherwise placed upon the part 14 of the box member, while the subject of the record 25 inthe part 14 of the box member is printed or otherwise placed upon the part 13 of the box member, and the reason for this arrangement of the various subjects used in connection with or on my improved record holder permits a' child or any-other party to read, sing or to note in any way music or illustrations on one part of the book-shaped box member, the subject played by a sound reproducing inachine on the record in or on the other part of the book-shaped .box member. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I also preferably mark the separate book-shaped box members for identification by vol. 1,2, 3, etc., as shown at 31 and which is applied to the bound or beaded end 16 of the part 13 of the box member and upon said beaded end I also preferably apply or mark the title or titles of such volume which, as
shown at 32 in Fig.
.Mother Goose and The Mocking Bird,
and all of the volumes are also preferably marked at the bottom as shown at 33 in library, which will identify my invention or my improved book-shaped boxmember which may be placed upon a shelf, or in a bookcase or. cabinet, as is illustrated in Fig. 1, and serves to contain one or more records with orwithout the stories or other illustrations of the subject of the records contained in said box member.
In other words, my invention is not necessarily limited to the combination of a 2 of the drawing, is.
.Talking story of the subject of the record or records contained in a book-shaped box member which is preferably printed or otherwise serves as a container for records of the class specified, lies in the fact that by mounting or securing member and leaving an extended and flanged edge on the box member entirely around and spaced from the periphery of the record secured therein for the purpose of preventing thebreaking of the record should said box member be dropped or handled roughly by the user.
It will also be understood that the subject or story printed or otherwise illustrated on the outer face or faces of the separate parts of the box member may be reproduced exactly by the record, as for example, a story of Mother Goose as printed on the face of one part of the box member may be told by the record or by playing the record in the other part of the box member, and it will be apparent that my improvement may be used for instructive purposes, for teaching children to sing, to tell stories andfor numerous other purposes as well as to educate them in different languages,-if desired; my invention being not limited to any specific subject placed upon or applied to the separate parts of the box member or upon the records therein.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A record holding device of the class described comprising a box-shaped member composed of detachably connected parts, one of said parts being provided on one face thereof with a reproducible record having a central aperture and the box wall being provided with a perforation which coincides therewith, whereby the record can be played without removing it from the box.
In testimony 'thatI claim" the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 24th day of January, 191
