Be it known that I, ALBERT A. SoRG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladders, f
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in step-ladders, and its objects are:v first, to provide a means whereby the steps may be rigidly secured to the stiles without the use of nails, &c., and, second, to provide a' means whereby the steps may be readily removed from, or resecured to the stiles, thus rendering it possible to-ship the ladders in the knock down even after they have been fully assembled.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a short piece of the .ladder stile with a step secured thereto by one of my devices. Figs. 2 and 3 are a front, and a back elevation, respectively of the same. Fig. 4 is an edge view, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the securing device detached from the ladder. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of the securing'de vice for securing the upper step to. the stiles of the extension section of my ladder. Figs. 7 and 8 are a front elevation, and a side elevvation, respectively, of the ladder complete, and Fig. 9 is a plan of the step supporting device shown in Fig. 6. V

All of the steps upon the upper section v of the ladder, except the upper step, are simply rungs, hence require no vsupporting element of the class herein described and shown, hence the necessity of the modified form herein given, which is designed, only, for use upon steps that are supported, laterzilly, at right angles withthe edges of the sti e.
What 1 claim as new in the art, is: 1. In combination with the stiles and steps of a ladder, sheet metal brackets formed with triangular end pieces adapted .to be firmly secured to the stiles, an. arm
formed at a right angle with the side of said end, means formed upon said arm for the reception of a bolt, means for securely connecting the arm with the. steps, anda bolt passedthrough the stileand engaging the arm in sucha manner as to bind the step firmly to the stile.

In combination with the stiles and steps of a ladder, sheet metal brackets hav ing an end arm of triangular form, an arm integralwith' the triangular arm and positioned at a rightangle with one side of the triangular arm, said right. angle arm having a slot therethrough, and ofisets formed alternately in said arm at each side of the slot forming a lateral opening for of bolts, and means for securing said the passage of a bolt, and bolts engaging brackets firmly to the ladder steps and the said arm and binding the brackets and steps" brackets and steps firmly to the ladder 10 firmly to the stiles of the ladder. stiles; l
