THOMAS A. KRIEGEL, OF CHICAGO, :IIJLINOIS. 5'
rnonsnns-rienssnn,
Application filed February 13, 1920. Serial No. 358,377,
To all w/wmit may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. KRIEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improve garment may first be adjusted to flat condition, combined with means "for firmly gripping a marginal portion of the'garment so that afterward the main portion of the garment can be finally adjusted and pressed.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device in which the'pressur'e-exerted upon different portions of the garment may be 7 adj applying the device to the pressing of trousers, to put more pressure on the cuffs than on the rest of the trousers, and to provide asomewhat greater space for the reception of these cuffs than for the portions of the garment which have not the samethickness.
Additional objects of the invention will become apparent from the following specification and the appended claims, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of thepress'ing device;
Fig. 2' is a top plan'view,'in a larger scale, of the portion of the device, with certain parts being shown broken away;
' Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1, on a larger scale; V
Fig. 4; is a section through the device, also on a larger scale, on line 44: of Fig. 1, and
Figs. 5 and6 are enlarged sectional detail views on lines 5-5 and 66 of Fig. 2.
The. device comprises two pressing members or boards 1 and 2, which have approximately the outline of the garment to be received between, as, for instance, a pair of trousers. 'These pressing members are reinforced at intervals by cross strips 3, 4, and 5, which extend transversely of the members, and which at the same time'serve for receiv ing the clamping means.
The cross strips 3, 4:, and 5 are provided usted independently of the pres-' with metal plates 6 and 7, respectively; the.
upper plates 6 being secured to the'upper cross strips 3, 4, and 5, and beingprovided w th slots 10, which extend from the outer edges of these plates inwardly; Similar'slots Specification of Letters ratent. Patented Oct 26, 1920;
inregistration with the slots 10 also extend through the cross strips and through-the pressing members'l and 2, The lower plates 1 7, secured to the transverse reinforcingstrips, carry near their front e'nds'hi'nge pins l1,.to which bolts 12 are pivotally secured. The bolts are mounted on th'esepins to swingwithin the registering slots v10 in the pressing members and reinforced platesQ "By means oflwing nuts 1.3engaging these bolts, the pressing members may be forced together with adjustable pressure, or, after the wing nutsare loosened, the bolts may be swung outwardly in the slotsand the pressing mem-' bersinay'be separated.
The upper board or" member 1 engages at its lower surface a-metal plate l5, to-which i are riveted the pins 16, slidable in holes 17 in the member 1 and providedwith liea'ds' 18,
in the cross strips.
prings 20, inserted between the cross strips'and the plate 16 in suitable openings j 21 of the upper pressing member, have a tendency to force this plate down or away from the lower surface of the board 1.
Additional clamping means, which, in the presentembodiment, are shown as intended to operate on the cuffs of the trousers, are
particularly illustrated in Figs. l, 5,1and 6. Transverse strips 22 and 23 are inserted into the pressing members '1 and 2 near their ends and parallel to the reinforcing strips 3, 4L, 5. These inserted strips 22 and 23 are provided with tapped openings 24 to receive the ends r of pressure screws 25, which project outwardlyfrom the margin ofthe board, and which are provided at their projecting ends 'with heads 26 and handles 27 to facilitate with metal plates 33, to which are riveted which are movable'fin suitable openings 19 80 pins 34,extending through the cooperating wedge blocks 28 and 29, and through the re-. duced portions 1, 2- into suitable openings 35 of the corresponding reinforcing strlps' 6 and 7. The outer wedge blocks 28 and 29, through which these holding pins 3 L for the lower wedge blocks 31 and 32 pass, are provided with longitudinal slots 36 to permit their displacement with respect to the pressing members 1 and 2 and with respect to the outer wedge blocks 31 and 32 in longitudinal direction. By rotation of the pressure screws the cooperative wedge blocks 28 and 31, 29and 32, are relatively displaced by movement of the outer wedge blocks 28 and 29, with respect tothe inner blocks 31 and 32, and the inner wedge blocks 31 and 32 may thereby be forced against each other with great'pressure, at the sametime, however, maintaining parallel relation to each other.
The operation of the device is as follows: After the garment has been laid flat on the top surface of the lower pressing mem her 2, the upper pressing member 1 is appliedand brought into registration with the lower member. The springs 20 will have a tendency to force the plate 15 into contact with the garment so as to prevent displacement of the same. The end portion of the garment, gripped between the'inner faces of f the wedge members 31 andv 32, is firmly pressed together by suitable adjustment of the pressure screws 25, and after this end 7 portion has been firmly gripped, the other part of the garment may be pulled taut so as to place the garment absolutely into flat condition. The wing nuts 13 are then tightened upon the bolts 12 and the pressure may either be uniformly distributed or adjusted to different degrees at different portions ofv the garment. I claim: 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of pressing members, means for forcing them together, and additional means for clamping garment portions between them, said additional means being supported by said pressing members, and be ing operative in a direction at right angles to the first named means for forcing the pressing members together.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of pressing members, means for forcing them together, a pair of cooperative wedge members in each pressing member, and means for longitudinally displacing said cooperative wedge members relatively to each other, and for decreasing the distance between the sets of wedge members carried by the pressing members.
3. In a, device of the character described,
the combination of pressing members, means for forcing them together, and a set of cooperative wedge members 1n a PI'GSSlIlg.
vided with longitudinal slots through which said pins extend, and means for longitudinally displacing one of said wedge members with respect to the other.
5. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a pair ofpressing boards, means for forcing them together, and a plate yieldingly held in connection with one of said pressing boards and adapted to main tain a garment in flat condition between said pressing boards prior to the application of pressure on said pressing boards.
6. Ina device of the character described, the combination of a pair of pressing'boa'rds,
means for forcing them together, pins passing through one of said pressing boards, a plate fastened to said pins, and means for normally urging said plate away from the pressing board to which it is secured.
} 7. In a device of the character described,
.the combination of a pair of pressing boards,
means for forcing them. together, pins slidably extendmg through one of said pressing boards, a plate fastened to said pins, and
springs inserted in said pressing board and acting upon said plate, adapted to force said plate normally away from said pressing board in direction toward the other pressing board when. the parts are in operative position. 7
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of pressing boards, means for forcing them together, a plate connected to, one of said pressing boards,
from said pressing board, and means for limiting the movement of said plate away from said pressing board.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature at 36 W. Randolph street, in the presence of two witnesses.
